Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi
Maruti Variant
General information and overview
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi features a 793 cc DDiS 125 engine, which is the smallest diesel engine powering a passenger car worldwide. This two-cylinder engine provides decent driveability in city conditions, with enough torque to handle urban traffic. The car has a well-packaged cabin with adequate legroom, excellent headroom, and a 235-liter boot. The suspension offers a neutral ride quality and predictable handling, making it comfortable on city roads. However, the engines poor refinement and lack of power on highways are notable downsides. The ZDi variant comes with integrated audio and phone controls, a user-friendly dashboard, and Marutis reliable after-sales service, which are significant positives. Overall, the Celerio Diesel ZDi is a good option for those looking for a fuel-efficient, city-friendly car with a robust service network.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi is a significant milestone for Maruti Suzuki, being their first homegrown diesel engine. While it excels in fuel efficiency and city driveability, it has its drawbacks. The 793 cc DDiS 125 engine, although peppy enough for urban commutes, lacks refinement and can be quite loud, especially at idle and low speeds. The engines crude note and vibrations can be off-putting, but its ability to handle city traffic with ease and its excellent fuel economy make it a viable option. The cars well-packaged cabin, adequate legroom, and excellent headroom are positives, but the higher variants come with a premium price tag that might be a deterrent for some buyers. Overall, its a good choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency and city driving, but not ideal for highway cruising.
Recent news and announcements
The Celerio diesel was available in LDi, VDi, and ZDi variants, with the ZDi offering additional features like a front passenger airbag and ABS. This made it one of the safest diesel cars in its segment at the time. I think the emphasis on safety features was a positive aspect, even if the cars overall performance was lacking.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel, launched in 2015, was notable for being the first diesel engine developed in-house by Suzuki. This 793cc two-cylinder engine produced 47bhp and 125 Nm of torque, and it was praised for its exceptional fuel efficiency of 27.62 km/l. However, it struggled with power delivery and overtaking. I believe the focus on fuel efficiency was a smart move, but the lack of power might have deterred some buyers.
Maruti Suzuki had planned to use the same 793cc diesel engine in other models like the next-generation Wagon R and Alto, as well as in their commercial vehicles. However, the poor reception of the Celerio diesel might have altered these plans. I believe this engine had potential but needed further refinement to appeal to a broader market.
Despite its impressive fuel efficiency, the Celerio diesel did not fare well in the market and was eventually discontinued due to low sales. Maruti Suzuki had to clear the leftover inventory with significant discounts. I think the cars performance issues and the lack of a diesel automatic variant might have contributed to its poor sales.
The Celerio diesel shared the same features as its petrol and CNG counterparts, including a 7-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, and central locking. The design remained identical to the other variants, with only the DDiS badge distinguishing it. I believe the consistent design approach helped maintain the cars appeal, even if the diesel engine didnt quite match expectations.
Pricing details and changes
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi was launched in India with a price range of between Rs. 4.65 lakhs to Rs. 5.71 lakhs (ex-Delhi). On-road prices vary by city but generally add around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 70,000 to the ex-showroom price, including taxes, registration, and insurance. For the ZDi variant specifically, you can expect to pay around Rs. 5.5 lakhs to Rs. 6.2 lakhs on-road, depending on your location. The premium over the petrol version, particularly for the higher variants, is notable, but Marutis excellent after-sales service and wide dealer network can justify the extra cost for many buyers.
Fuel efficiency information
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi boasts an impressive ARAI-rated fuel economy of 27.62 kmpl, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India. In real-world conditions, you can expect around 20-25 kmpl, which is still very commendable. This excellent mileage, combined with the lower running costs of diesel fuel, makes the Celerio Diesel an attractive option for those concerned about fuel expenses.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi
Maruti Suzuki has again claimed itself as the mileage champion of Indian diesel vehicles through the introduction of Celerio's diesel version. The car can be called as the twin of the former Celerio, with a change in its soul only. It was the most awaited car as many of the entry level hatchback buyers would have been waiting from a long time, in search of a low maintenance diesel car for a substitute to their fuel drinking petrol ones. The car has finally arrived with a surprisingly attractive price tag.
Exterior
The car features exactly the same shell on which the petrol Celerio was made. The same design has been used to save as much cost as can be saved out of it. The only thing developed new was the engine. The car looks average, not much attractive from its design point of view. It stands tall, as many of the competitors does not have such headroom and ground clearance. Chrome has been lightly used on the car, making it again a super saver pack for the manufacturer. It looks alive in bright shades whereas the dull shade makes it more like a boring city car. The same 6 spoke alloy wheels have been used on the car. Large windows give a better view of outside than most of the entry level hatchbacks.
Interior
This is where Maruti Suzuki has evolved the most in the recent years. The interior of the diesel Celerio remains the same as that of the petrol model. The neat arrangement of black and beige makes it a really impressive car with its price tag being compared to it. The car lacks a touchscreen unit but still the conventional unit makes the dashboard look more beautiful than most of the Maruti Suzuki entry level cars. It comes with all the options like Bluetooth, AUX and USB. The gear knob is the same being carried throughout the entry level offerings, looking much like a golf ball on its stand. The silver accents are pure and look awesome wherever being used on the inside.
Engine & Performance
The new Celerio diesel is powered with a 793cc DDiS125 2-Cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, producing 47 BHP @ 3500 rpm and 125 NM @ 2000 rpm. The same 5-speed manual gearbox being used on the petrol variant has been equipped into the car. It is said to be the most fuel efficient car in India, returning 27.62 kmpl. The engine weighs just 89 kg, making it more effective in weight cutting and the top trim weighs less than 900 kg, making it quiet a light offering with a diesel engine. The power values sound low for a diesel car but the thing has been neglected as the car has been tagged as an ideal city car. The engine noises are said to be a bit more than expected but fully controlled by the insulation system which makes you feel nice inside the car.
Comfort
The car packs all the standard comfort features being offered in the segment. It has spacious interiors which are missing on most of the rivals and that too with plenty of leg space for people with average height. The car gets a powerful air conditioner, which is manually controlled by the iconic Maruti style knobs. The defogger makes it easy in unexpected weathers conditions to see what comes at the rear. It is also accompanied by a heater for winter seasons. The seats are beautifully crafted, saving a lot of space with their slim yet sturdy design.
Safety
The car packs plenty of safety inside. The top variant comes with a driver and passenger airbag for front collisions and strong steel alloy bars have been used for side safety. ABS is present for efficient braking in non-ideal conditions, making it safe on rough roads too. Braking light has been mounted on the rear for better attention of the other cars on the road whereas fog lamps for better visibility in foggy conditions have also been provided.
Variants & Ex-showroom Price
The car comes in 4 variants namely the LDi, VDi, ZDi and ZDi(O). The nomenclature has been carried over from earlier diesel cars and the pricing has been beautifully done at INR 4.65 lac, INR 4.95 lac, INR 5.25 lac and INR 5.71 for the above stated variants in the same order as they are listed. The competitive pricing and vast number of features will definitely lead to a better response to the new comer and it will definitely influence the sales of other cars in the segment.
