General information and overview

The India‑spec Chevrolet Captiva, especially in its later 2.2‑litre avatar, is a monocoque, 7‑seat diesel SUV that was aimed at buyers wanting a comfortable, feature‑rich family car without going to the more expensive Europeans. It uses a 2231 cc turbo‑diesel putting out about 184–186 bhp and roughly 400–424 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels or all four wheels depending on variant. On the road, this engine and the 6‑speed manual or automatic gearboxes deliver strong mid‑range performance, making overtakes and highway cruising easy even when fully loaded. The cabin offers three rows, decent ergonomics, supportive seats and good overall space, backed by conveniences like automatic climate control, cruise control, electric parking brake and an audio system that was well‑specced for its time. Higher variants got a self‑levelling rear suspension that helps maintain composure when loaded. The flip side is that steering feel is only average and the overall driving experience, cabin design and safety/infotainment tech now feel outdated against modern rivals. With Chevrolet no longer in India, the Captiva has effectively become a left‑field choice, suitable mainly for buyers who value its torquey diesel, space and comfort and are ready to manage ownership through trusted independent garages and careful parts sourcing.

The Chevrolet Captiva, tailored for India with a 2.2-litre VCDi diesel (184bhp, 424Nm), seats seven in a spacious cabin with 177mm ground clearance, FWD/AWD options, and self-levelling rear suspension for loaded stability. I appreciate its highway prowess—settled ride, low NVH, and punchy torque make family trips effortless, complemented by cruise control, auto climate, height-adjustable seats, and a seven-inch infotainment. Facelifted interiors feature improved plastics and angular vents, though steering lacks feel and cornering wallows. At 2231cc, it punches above city agility but excels cruising, with decent third-row for kids and ample boot when folded. Discontinued post-2017, it remains a used gem for torque lovers seeking value over gadgets—buy if space and diesel economy top your list.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

Looking at the Chevrolet Captiva sold in India, I see it as a solid but now very dated premium diesel SUV that only makes sense today if you find a well‑maintained used example at the right price. The 2.2‑litre diesel with around 184 bhp and 400–424 Nm gives strong mid‑range punch and relaxed cruising, and the self‑levelling rear suspension on higher variants delivers impressive high‑speed stability and load‑carrying ability for long highway runs. Cabin space is generous, with the flexibility of seven seats, and equipment like auto climate control, cruise control and safety kit still feels acceptable, though clearly not modern. Where it starts to show its age is in overall refinement, steering feel and tech – the hydraulic steering is light enough but not very precise, and the interior design and infotainment are old‑school compared with newer SUVs. Add to this Chevrolet’s complete exit from the Indian market, which affects long‑term parts availability, resale value and service reach, and I would only recommend the Captiva to someone who prioritises a torquey highway cruiser with seven seats, is comfortable dealing with an orphan brand, and can secure strong post‑purchase support from an independent workshop network.

After extensively testing the Chevrolet Captiva in Indian conditions, I find it a compelling seven-seater SUV for families prioritizing space and highway cruising over agile city handling. The 2.2-litre diesel engine delivers 184bhp and a massive 424Nm torque, making overtakes effortless and loaded drives punchy, paired with a six-speed manual that shifts decently despite a heavy clutch. Ride quality shines on undulating highways, absorbing bumps settled thanks to chassis tweaks, while low noise levels ensure relaxed long hauls. Interiors offer plush plastics and a functional seven-inch screen, with clever console redesigns elevating the cabin, though hard shiny bits fall short of premium rivals. Third-row seating accommodates kids adequately for short trips, and features like cruise control, height-adjustable seats, and self-levelling rear suspension add practicality. Drawbacks include wallowy cornering, vague steering feedback, and ponderous gearshifts that tire in traffic, but at its value, it undercuts flashier competitors while delivering reliable GM build for Indian roads. I recommend it for buyers valuing torque and space over sportiness—it's a smart buy if you highway-drive more than city-crawl.

The Captivas exterior styling includes stylish two-tone taillights, a contoured roof-mounted spoiler, and a redesigned rear bumper with fake exhaust tips. The front end features a chrome trim and LED headlamps, which are particularly useful in harsh driving conditions. I believe these design elements give the Captiva a modern and appealing look.

In terms of performance, the 2024 Chevrolet Captiva is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 149 hp and 255 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT automatic transmission. This setup allows the Captiva to reach a top speed of 180 km/h and achieve a fuel economy of 9.2 L/100 km. I believe this engine provides a good balance between power and efficiency.

The interior of the 2024 Chevrolet Captiva boasts a light-beige-dominated dual-tone theme, an expansive panoramic sunroof, and big windows, making the cabin feel airy. It features a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6-speaker audio system, and a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. However, the third row of seats is less comfortable and more suited for children.

The 2024 Chevrolet Captiva features a sculpted contemporary design with technological upgrades. It includes LED headlights, keyless entry with push-button start, and surround-view cameras. The vehicle also has a unique portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen, which enhances both aesthetic appeal and functional comfort. I think this design approach makes the Captiva stand out in its segment.

Pricing details and changes

When I look at the last official prices, the 2015 Chevrolet Captiva in India was positioned as a premium SUV, with ex‑showroom Delhi prices of about Rs 25.14 lakh for the manual 4x2 and roughly Rs 27.36 lakh for the automatic, with both 4x2 and AWD variants on offer. On‑road at the time, this translated to roughly Rs 29–31 lakh in major metros once insurance, registration and basic accessories were added, putting it firmly into what is now used‑Fortuner territory. New‑car sale is no longer relevant because Chevrolet has left India, so what matters today is used‑market pricing. In the current market, I would personally benchmark a clean, low‑running last‑batch Captiva at a significant discount versus comparable Japanese and Korean SUVs, because buyers have to factor in weaker resale, limited authorised support and potential waiting for certain spares. If a seller is asking close to what a similar‑age Fortuner, Endeavour or even a well‑kept CR‑V commands, I would walk away; the Captiva only becomes compelling if the initial purchase price clearly compensates for the brand’s exit and the added ownership risk.
December 22, 2025
In India, the Chevrolet Captiva's 2015 facelift topped out at Rs 25.13 lakh ex-showroom for the manual variant, with the automatic at Rs 27.36 lakh ex-showroom in New Delhi, reflecting its premium positioning against rivals like the Mahindra XUV500. On-road prices then pushed to around Rs 28-30 lakh in metros like Delhi, factoring 12-15% road tax, insurance (Rs 60,000-80,000 annually), RTO registration, and fastag—higher in states like Karnataka or Maharashtra due to elevated taxes up to 18%, potentially hitting Rs 32 lakh on-road. I view this as strong value even today in the used market, where well-maintained 2015-2017 models fetch Rs 6-10 lakh depending on mileage and condition, offering diesel torque and seven seats cheaper than new equivalents. Resale holds decently for a discontinued Chevy, aided by robust build, but factor higher service costs (Rs 10,000-15,000 per interval) versus Maruti or Hyundai. For budget-conscious families, hunt low-km examples under Rs 8 lakh—savings justify minor upkeep, making it a savvy pick over pricier new SUVs with similar space but thirstier petrol mills.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

From an efficiency standpoint in India, I would expect the 2.2‑litre Captiva diesel to realistically return around 10–11 km/l in city use and 13–15 km/l on the highway if driven sensibly, based on owner reports and the engine’s output characteristics. That makes running costs reasonable for a 7‑seat diesel SUV, but not outstanding. If fuel economy is a top priority, there are newer, lighter diesels that will do better; the Captiva’s appeal lies more in torque and cruising ability than outright frugality.
December 22, 2025
In real-world Indian driving, the Captiva's 2.2-litre diesel returns 9-11kpl city and 13-15kpl highway with careful throttling, aided by tall sixth gear, though heavy clutch and traffic sap efficiency. Running costs stay reasonable at Rs 6-7/km on diesel, undercutting petrol rivals—ideal if your annual 15,000km mix favors highways, but skip if pure city use spikes fuel bills.

All about new chevrolet captiva, details, specifications, price, photos and review in india

Overview

Chevrolet Captiva is the least known SUV in our Indian car market. Till now it has not been recognized the way Chevrolet wants it to be and that’s why they are ready with the face lifted version of this car. Chevrolet India has launched the New 2013 Chevrolet Captiva in India at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. The sale of the same started on 26th June, 2012. The main reason to launch the New Captiva is that the sales of Captiva have dropped after the launch of Toyota Fortuner, which is the segment leader in SUV market. Some of key features of New Captiva are:new design for head lamps and tail lamps, new Split design front grille, new 2.2 litre diesel engine mated to 6-speed automatic transmission, LED turn indicators integrated into rear view mirrors, new design for side air vents integrated into the fender, new dual cockpit design for the centre console, new color combinations for interiors and fabrics, new dash integrated music system featuring AUX and USB ports and new design for the alloy wheels.

Exterior

SUVs are often known for their macho appearance which was always missing from this car. The car never looked like a mature SUV especially from its front. Chevrolet has intentionally worked on the face of new Captiva to make it look more aggressive and macho. New giant front grille is divided by a Chevrolet logo and the restyled front bumper and fog lights improve the visual appearance of this car. It remains the same from sideways except for the built in turn indicators on side mirrors and the air intake. It still looks best when seen from its side otherwise its back portion also remains unchanged and will surely disappoint you especially its tail lights which resemble to the much cheaper Spark.

Interior

Interiors also get restyled and certainly look better than before. It has all-new instrument panel and central console. New dials are extremely easy to read. The car features all genuine leather upholstery which feels up market. The plastic is better than many of its competitors but it has some room left for improvement. It has a seating capacity of 7 people which is again a carry-over from the previous model but it’s a good thing as it is very convenient and comfortable.

Comfort and Convenience

The large space inside confirms you acres of legroom and shoulder room. Seats also offer optimum under thigh and back support for front and rear passengers. Driver seat is electrically adjustable with an adjustable steering for the driver to get into the perfect driving position. It has front and rear armrests to make you comfortable. It has an automatic climate control with 3rd row AC vents, electrically foldable, heated and adjustable side mirrors with parking camera. For your long journeys, the car offers cruise control system along with Hill start assist and on demand four wheel drive system. Other features include auto headlights, wipers and central locking.

Dashboard and Storage

Texture, color remains intact of this dashboard with a seven inch screen fitted in the central console which looks stylish with nicely altered air vents. Chevrolet Captiva comes with roomy glove boxes, cubbyholes, cup holders at front and in the rear armrest. You get a massive storage space except for the standard boot capacity when you fold its 2nd and 3rd row.

Music System

Chevrolet Captiva features an upgraded double-din radio, CD, MP3 player surround sound audio system with 8 powerful speakers and Bluetooth connectivity. Bluetooth and audio controls are mounted on its steering wheel.

Engine and Gearbox

New Captiva is offered with two engines, one of them is its old 2.0L diesel engine offered with 5-speed manual gearbox. The 2.0 litre engine generates maximum power of 148 bhp. The second engine is a new 2.2L DOHC diesel engine which generates a maximum power of 186.5 bhp at 3800 rpm with a massive torque output of 424 Nm available at 2000 rpm. This engine is mated with a new six-speed gearbox.

Acceleration and Performance

The new 2.2L engine is not as enthusiastic as it seems on paper. The car suffers a major turbo lag as it starts to respond after 2000 rpm. Its new gearbox works well than before as the new gear ratios feel well proportionate. Its 5th and 6th gears are relatively taller which makes it a good cruiser on highways. In day to day usage, this car can’t match the driving comfort offered by Toyota Fortuner. In city traffic, you hardly notice any turbo lag in Fortuner while in Captiva, you will continuously complain about its slow behaviour. Yes, once it starts going it becomes a breeze till 3000rpm and this new engine feels much more refined than the smaller 2.0L engine.

Mileage

The car gives less mileage than its competitors. Its new 2.2L diesel engine gives you a mileage of around 8km/ltr in city conditions while on highways expect a mileage of around 9-11km/ltr. Its 2.0L engine gives you an overall mileage of around 10km/ltr.

Safety Features

The new Captiva will be offered with 6 airbags to provide you maximum safety. It also features rear defogger and fog lights for better visibility.

Suspension and Braking

Chevrolet has improved the suspension quality of this car to provide you comfortable rides. Its automatic level ride suspension makes this car feel quite settle on bad roads. The braking system includes ventilated disk brakes on its all four 17inch alloy wheels. The car also features ABS with EBD to make sure that this heavy vehicle remains under control.

Ride and Handling

With its high ground clearance (197mm) and wheelbase (2705mm), this car feels grounded on high speeds and sharp corners. However, body roll is quite evident due to its big size. Its handling could have been much lighter as it feels quite a task to use it in city traffic.

Warranty

Chevrolet offers 2 years/50,000 kilometers warranty on Captiva.

Variants

Chevrolet Captiva is available in three variants: 2.0 MT, 2.0 xTreme MT and 2.2 AT AWD.

Verdict

Looking at the tough competition, We think Chevrolet has overpriced the new Captiva. Except for few changes there has nothing much changed in its appearance and frankly speaking it still doesn’t look as stable as Fortuner. Yes, it has a powerful engine but not as fast and responsive as Fortuner. Fuel efficiency is also a matter of concern and Chevrolet’s high maintenance and poor resale value makes things worse. There are very less or no reasons to say if it’s a value for money car. Chevrolet has to do something exceptional to beat Toyota Fortuner in our market otherwise we don’t think people will shift from their trusted car to expensive Captiva.
