General information and overview

I see the 2012 Maruti Alto as a compact, lightweight hatchback offered in 800cc and K10 1.0‑litre petrol variants, featuring simple mechanicals (5‑speed manual common, AMT available on some later small‑car variants in the family) and a focus on economy, low maintenance and easy city use. The interior is basic but utilitarian, with modest cabin space that suits two adults comfortably up front and shorter trips for three in the rear; NVH control and crash protection are limited compared with modern hatchbacks, and features are sparse on base trims while higher trims add essentials like power windows and improved trim. Driving character is upright and peppy for urban use — the 1.0‑litre K‑series feels notably peppy for overtakes and inner‑city acceleration while the 800cc is tuned more for economy. My buying checklist would be: confirm full service history, inspect clutch and gearbox behaviour, check for rust and water ingress, verify tyres and suspension condition, and if safety or rear comfort matter to you, weigh the Alto against newer or slightly larger alternatives before deciding.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I appreciate the 2012 Maruti Alto for what it is: a no-nonsense, exceptionally economical city hatch that prioritises affordability, ease of ownership and fuss-free packaging; its light controls, compact footprint and sprightly 800/1.0‑litre K‑series feel make daily commuting and tight‑space parking genuinely easy while long‑term ownership reports show the model can run reliably with modest maintenance costs. The trade-offs are clear — the cabin is basic and feels dated, rear seat space and comfort are limited for adults on longer trips, NVH is high compared with modern hatchbacks, and safety equipment is minimal in many variants of this year (ABS and airbags were not universally standard). If your priorities are lowest possible running cost, cheap spares and simple mechanicals, I’d recommend the 2012 Alto; if you need modern safety, refinement or roomy rear seating, you should consider alternatives or a newer model.

Recent news and announcements

The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, launched in August 2022, has seen a significant decline in sales in the first half of 2024, selling only 57,943 units compared to 80,903 units in the same period last year. This decline is attributed to the rising popularity of SUVs in the Indian market. The Alto K10 is priced between Rs. 3.99 lakh and Rs. 5.96 lakh and features a 1.0L K10C engine. I think the shift towards SUVs is a trend that will continue to impact hatchback sales.

Maruti Suzuki has introduced a CNG variant of the new-generation Alto K10 shortly after its launch in August 2022. This move aims to capitalize on the growing demand for CNG vehicles in India, offering better fuel efficiency and lower running costs. The CNG variant is expected to appeal to budget-conscious buyers. I believe this addition will help the Alto K10 regain some of its lost market share.

The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 was launched in India on August 18, 2022, with a fresh design, enhanced features, and a new engine. The car is built on the HEARTECT platform and comes with a 1.0L K10C three-cylinder Dual Jet Dual VVT petrol engine. It also features idle start/stop technology and is available with both manual and AMT transmissions. The base price starts at Rs. 3.99 lakh. I think the new design and features will attract a lot of first-time car buyers.

In April 2019, the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 received another refresh to comply with the upcoming safety and emission norms. The updated model included cosmetic upgrades and additional safety features such as front and rear crash test compliance. The Alto 800 was powered by a BS6 compliant 796cc engine. I believe these updates were crucial for the Alto to remain competitive in the market.

Maruti Suzuki launched the Alto 800 facelift in India in April 2019, with prices starting at Rs. 2.94 lakh for the base Standard variant and going up to Rs. 3.72 lakh for the top-spec VXI variant. The facelift included new safety features and a BS6 compliant engine. The car was designed to meet the upcoming safety and emission norms. I think this facelift helped the Alto 800 stay relevant in a changing regulatory environment.

Price

Pricing details and changes

I find ex‑showroom prices for the 2012 Alto when new ranged in the affordable sub‑compact segment (historically around the entry‑level price band for Maruti small cars), and today a well‑maintained 2012 Alto in India typically trades in the used market at a substantially lower price depending on variant, condition and city; private sale rates commonly vary widely so you’ll see low‑end listings substantially cheaper than dealer‑refurbished examples. On‑road cost for a used purchase will add transfer, RTO, insurance and any immediate service/parts you choose to fit — expect to pay a few thousand extra for paperwork and insurance renewals and more if you replace wear items (tyres, battery, brakes) or fit safety/comfort upgrades. My practical insight is to prioritise documented service history and a pre‑purchase inspection over chasing the lowest sticker price, because the Alto’s low initial cost can be offset by repair bills if maintenance was neglected; for city buyers the total on‑road buying cost often still works out lower than buying a newer competitor, but confirm running‑condition and rust/structural soundness before committing.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

Real‑world city mileage for the 2012 Alto commonly falls between about 14–18 kmpl for the K10 (1.0‑litre) and somewhat higher for the 800cc versions, while relaxed highway cruising can push figures toward the 20–23 kmpl mark under ideal conditions; I recommend budgeting conservatively (lower end of those ranges) for mixed urban driving, and factor in that careful servicing (air filter, correct tyre pressures, smooth driving) materially preserves the Alto’s key advantage — low running cost.

According to a report by Economic Times, India's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki is all set to bring on the road a revamped and cheaper Alto. Maruti feels that now is the best time to launch a stripp

Overview

Maruti Alto is one of the incarnations of the a common platform, designed with the Japanese principles of kei-ji-dosha which strictly decide the dimensions a car must confirm to in order to be called a small car, in japan that is. As a matter of fact, it is the elder brother of the Maruti 800. At one point of time, Maruti was selling 3 versions of the Maruti 800 here - the 800, Alto and the old Zen. All are different generations of same model. Launched eight years ago, the Alto has displaced the M800 as Maruti's flagship company in the domestic market. Moreover, this model is also exported to other countries including Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Greece, Austria, Ireland, the UK, France, Italy and Sweden and now it plans to start exporting it to new markets like Denmark, Hungary and Portugal.

So far it has exported nearly 2 lakh Altos. During FY 2007-08, Maruti sold sold 227,170 units in the domestic market. Alto sales have actually picked up very fast over the last 24-30 months. While Maruti only sold around 500,000 units of the Alto within the first six years of the car's launch, it has sold around the same number over the last two years. Maruti Suzuki India has launched the new upgraded and refreshed Alto with tweaked 800cc engine and minor facelift. The New alto comes with an upgraded engine which is BSIV compliance to meet the new emission norms. The New Alto has a new and improved Catalytic Converter which makes it less polluting and environment friendly. It gets a new and improved Engine Management System (EMS), with and Improved mileage of 19.7 km/l and faster acceleration: 0-100 in 17.7 seconds.

Maruti Suzuki India has launched special festive editions of Alto and Alto K10. They have been christened as Alto Xplore and Alto K10 Xplore. They come with host of new features like: Two-din music system with USB and Bluetooth, Leather feel seats, New body graphics/decals, Body coloured bumpers, Body coloured ORVMs, Body coloured door handles, Sporty roof spoiler, Stylish door sill guard, Front power windows, Mud flap set, Universal carpet mat and Car perfume.

Most prominent features of Maruti Alto are: Front seats with integrated headrest, New Fabric for seats, New Tail lamp cluster, Big Suzuki Logo on Boot, Sticker at the rear, New wheel rim design, 2 tone Dashboard, New speedometer with Digital fuel gauge, Electronic Power Steering, Brake Booster, Heater, Ventilator Air Conditioner, F8D Engine, Engine Immobilizera and Tubeless Radial Tyres – 145/80 R 12.

Exterior and Interior

New Maruti Alto is based on the Wagon R's platform but has an identity of its own. It has a clean silhouette and a minimalist design minus any frippery. A chunky front bumper, a dashing front grille and a bold 'S' badge are among the new design cues on the front fascia. The ride quality of New Maruti Alto is pleasant and comfortable but handling does not exactly measure up. Steering is spongy at times. The stiff suspension of New Alto soaks up bumps quite well and Brakes are hugely responsive too. A stiff chassis gives the Alto its fabulous driving character. New Alto's interiors are very basic with simple dashboard, with provision for the stereo in a very common position. New Alto gets dual tone treatment for the centre console. The controls for the air conditioning are the new design rotary type, with the sliding type controls found on the non-AC model. In Lx & Lxi variants seat come in fabric and the quality is quite good and so are the colors and the graphics used. The doors of New Alto don't have map pockets at the side; neither is there a decent enough number of cup holders. The instrument cluster has a big white speedometer in centre flanked by the new digital fuel gauge and odometer.

Variants

The Alto is available in three variants - Maruti Alto Standard, Maruti Alto LX and Maruti Alto LXi. New Alto borrows from Maruti 800's tried and tested engine technology, therefore delivering optimal performance. It is a car with minimum number of problems - 93 per 100 vehicles in the B-segment according to JD Power Asia Pacific 2005 India awards. One of the best things about Maruti is the fact that it has authorized service centers all over India. Maintenance is low and the spare parts are easily available in the market. So you don’t need to worry when it comes to maintenance and repairs of your car.

Shades

Maruti Suzuki Alto is available in six shades: Midnight Black, Ecru Beige, Superior White, Silky Silver, Fire Brick Red and Blue Blaze.
