Hyundai i20 Active (2019)
Hyundai Model
General information and overview
The Hyundai i20 Active SX (2019) is a crossover-styled version of the Elite i20, designed for Indian roads with 190mm ground clearance, making it more capable on rough patches and flooded streets. It’s powered by a 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine producing 83 HP and 114.7 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, offering strong low-end performance and relaxed highway cruising. The kerb weight is around 1200 kg, with a 45-litre fuel tank and a boot space of 295 litres, which is decent for a compact hatchback. The interior is well-equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, rear parking camera with sensors, and automatic projector headlamps with LED DRLs. Safety includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and side and curtain airbags on the top variant. It’s a practical, feature-loaded, and comfortable daily driver that works well for city use and occasional highway trips, especially in areas with poor road conditions.
The Hyundai i20 Active (2019) is a compact crossover derived from the Elite i20 hatchback but distinctly enhanced with SUV-inspired styling and increased ride height. It is offered with a 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine producing 83 horsepower and 114.7 Nm torque paired with a 5-speed manual transmission; a petrol version with a 1.2-litre engine is also available. Featuring a raised ground clearance of 190 mm, it’s well suited for India’s varied road conditions, providing more confidence over potholes and rough patches. Its interior boasts premium materials, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, and a practical 295-litre boot. Safety features include ABS with EBD, dual front airbags standard, and side plus curtain airbags on higher variants, complemented by rear parking sensors and a camera. With a kerb weight of 1200 kg and a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres, the i20 Active balances performance, comfort, and economy. Its styling upgrades, combined with functional enhancements, deliver an appealing package for buyers looking for a comfortable yet rugged compact vehicle tailored to Indian roads.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Hyundai i20 Active SX (2019) is a smart pick for buyers wanting a stylish, feature-rich hatchback with crossover flair. It builds on the Elite i20’s strong base by adding 190mm ground clearance, making it far more capable on rough city roads and rural patches. The 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine delivers strong low-end torque and relaxed highway cruising, making it ideal for mixed city-highway use. The cabin feels premium with a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and a rear parking camera. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and side and curtain airbags on the top variant add to its safety appeal. Ride comfort is good and visibility is excellent, though the suspension can feel a bit stiff on badly broken roads. Handling is safe and predictable but not sporty. For someone prioritising comfort, features, and rough-road ability over sharp dynamics, this remains a compelling choice in the compact crossover segment.
The Hyundai i20 Active (2019) is a robust compact crossover that impresses with its stylish, rugged design and elevated ground clearance of 190 mm, which allows it to handle rough Indian roads confidently. Powered by a peppy 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine delivering 83 HP and 114.7 Nm torque, it offers a lively driving experience both in city traffic and on highways. The feature list is comprehensive for its segment, including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, and safety provisions like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and optional side and curtain airbags in the top variant. While the suspension tends to feel a bit firm over uneven surfaces, overall ride quality and handling remain stable and comfortable. Its well-built interior, practical boot space (295 litres), and quiet cabin add to the appeal. The i20 Active SX strikes a good balance between style, comfort, and practicality, making it a compelling choice in India’s compact crossover market. Its modest drawbacks like slightly stiff suspension and non-availability of an automatic gearbox reflect compromises typical of its category and price point.
Recent news and announcements
Hyundai Motor India silently launched the 2019 Hyundai i20 Active in India, with prices starting at Rs. 7.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The new model comes in three variants: S, SX, and SX dual-tone, and is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. The update includes new safety features such as reverse parking sensors, reverse camera, and speed alert system. I think these safety additions are a significant step forward for the i20 Active.
The 2019 Hyundai i20 Active includes several cosmetic updates, such as projector headlamps with LED DRLs and cornering lamps, LED taillights, fog lamps, and a shark fin antenna. The interior features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a push start button, wireless charger, and automatic climate control. I believe these updates make the i20 Active more appealing to modern buyers.
The 2019 Hyundai i20 Active saw a marginal price increase of about Rs. 2,000 over the previous model. Despite the price hike, the vehicle remains competitive in its segment. I think the added features justify the slight increase in price.
Hyundai has introduced new safety features in the 2019 i20 Active to comply with mandatory safety norms. These features include six airbags, reverse parking sensors, seatbelt reminder, speed alerts, and ABS with EBD. These enhancements significantly improve the safety profile of the vehicle.
The 2019 Hyundai i20 Active retains the same engine options as its predecessor, featuring a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 82 bhp and a 1.4-litre diesel engine producing 89 bhp. The petrol engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the diesel engine comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine is only available in the top SX trim.
Pricing details and changes
The Hyundai i20 Active SX (2019) was positioned as a premium compact crossover, with ex-showroom prices in India ranging between ₹8.5 lakh and ₹9.5 lakh depending on the city and exact specification. On-road prices, including RTO registration, insurance, and other charges, typically landed between ₹9.8 lakh and ₹11 lakh, again varying by state and local taxes. Compared to regular hatchbacks like the Baleno or Jazz, it was pricier, but that premium bought extra ground clearance, crossover styling, and a well-loaded feature set. For buyers in semi-urban or rural areas dealing with bad roads, the price felt justified by the added practicality and comfort. However, in metro cities where rough roads are less of a concern, the same budget could stretch to more powerful or feature-rich hatchbacks or even compact SUVs. The resale value has held up reasonably well, especially for well-maintained diesel units, but insurance and service costs are slightly higher than entry-level hatchbacks, which is something to factor in when budgeting for long-term ownership.
In India, the Hyundai i20 Active (2019) is priced ex-showroom beginning around Rs. 7.13 lakh and goes up to approximately Rs. 10.19 lakh for the diesel-powered SX variant, which is the most feature-rich trim. On-road prices vary based on city and state but one can expect an additional Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1 lakh over the ex-showroom price for registration, insurance, and taxes. This positions the i20 Active as a premium offering compared to regular hatchbacks but justified by its crossover styling, extra ground clearance, and comprehensive features. Despite a slightly higher price tag compared to the Elite i20 hatchback, it holds value for buyers seeking a rugged look and better capability on rough urban or rural roads. The lack of an automatic variant may limit some urban buyers, but the overall package coupled with Hyundai’s strong after-sales network ensures reasonable ownership costs. Given the segment’s competitive pricing, the i20 Active remains an attractive choice for buyers who want a mix of style, space, and practicality within a mid-budget range in India.
Fuel efficiency information
The Hyundai i20 Active SX diesel’s ARAI-claimed mileage is around 17.19 kmpl, but real-world figures in Indian conditions are more realistic at 13–15 kmpl in mixed city-highway driving. In heavy city traffic, expect closer to 11–13 kmpl, while highway runs can touch 16–17 kmpl with careful driving. For someone prioritising low running costs and high daily usage, this diesel variant makes sense over petrol, especially if covering long distances regularly. However, for mostly short city commutes with low annual running, the higher upfront cost of the diesel model may not pay back quickly enough to justify the extra investment over a petrol hatchback.
The Hyundai i20 Active (2019) diesel variant delivers a certified ARAI mileage of about 21.19 kmpl, making it efficient for both city and highway use in India. The petrol variant offers circa 17.19 kmpl. Real-world mileage in city conditions may be lower due to stop-and-go traffic, but its good fuel efficiency helps keep running costs manageable compared to larger SUVs. This mileage level strikes a practical balance for buyers concerned about fuel economy without compromising on performance and ride quality, making it suitable for daily commuting as well as occasional highway drives.

Expert Verdict

Hyundai creates a new style statement with every new launch and with a shock we had with the i20 Elite, we can expect what this time would be like. It’s about the new i20 Active which is a crossover with a special Hyundai touch. With premium features and impressive ride height, the new car stands apart.
Engine & Performance
The same old elite i20's 1.4L U2 CRDi producing 88.7 BHP and a torque of 219 NM has been used for the diesel variant. Also it shares the 1.2L petrol engine, producing 81.83 BHP and 114 NM of torque. The petrol engine gets a 5 speed manual gearbox and the diesel gets a zippy six speed gearbox. Performance & style gets a good balance in Hyundai's offerings and the crossover can bring value for money for the customers.
Exterior
The new crossover gets few cosmetic changes over its hatch cousin. The headlight gets projector lamps with DRL's and corner lights for maximum visibility in the most rugged up weather conditions. The front gets a new bumper design with round fog lamps which give it a crossover feel. Body cladding has been added with round reflectors at the rear of the car. We get the new roof rails with a shiny c-pillar instead of matte.
Interior
The new offering gets a refreshed interior which adds up sportiness with the elite feeling. The change in color of the interior made way for more young buyers as light colors may not attract them as compared to the blue, orange and black combinations. Beautiful combinations will make you feel more refreshed every-time you ride. The seats also get the matching covers with the doors and the dashboard.
Tyres and Suspension
On the base variant, 185/65 R15 tires have been used with clean silver alloy, for both petrol and diesel variants. For the upper variants (S & SX), 195/65 R16 with diamond cut alloy has been used. Tubeless tires have been used in all the variants. The suspension used for the front is McPherson Strut with Coil Spring and for rear Coupled Torsion Beam Axle with Coil Spring is being used in the new crossover.
Comfort
As other Hyundai offerings, comfort has always been a key factor in Hyundai's cars. The i20 Active comes with fully automatic temperature control system, Reverse parking sensors and camera, rear AC vents, 2 DIN music system with 1 GB memory, driver seat height adjustment, auto fold-able electric mirrors and many more.
Safety
The new i20 Active comes equipped with ABS for more safety and with the provision of 185/65 tires, the road grip is nothing to be worried about. It comes with dual airbags for increased safety of the rider as well as the passenger. The impact sensing door unlock technology unlocks the doors in case of collision for easy escape.
Variants
Hyundai offers the i20 Active in total 5 variants, in which 2 are for petrol engine (Base and S) and 3 for diesel engine (Base, S, SX).
Price
The approx. ex-showroom price tag for petrol base and petrol S trim is INR 6,38,586 and 7,09,735 respectively. Diesel base, S, SX trims are priced at INR 7,63,228 for the base and INR 8,34,337 and 8,89,427 for S and SX respectively. Hyundai has listed them as introductory offer prices which show the figures may rise anytime!!
Verdict
The iconic styling of the Elite i20 when mixed with the toughness of a crossover DNA will form a superb combination for those who don’t care what the road actually is. It has a lot more fun packed inside than it looks outside.
