Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Royal Enfield Scram 411 most certainly scores in my book in looking for a motorcycle that has both touring capabilities and can cut into some dirt with rugged riding. The trendy graphics, decent power, and comfortable riding experience makes it well worth its price range. The multiple unique color/design variations adds more marketing value to it. It does not provide a few features such as switchable ABS but is still fun to ride. All in all the Scram 411 does live up to expectations and is a great bike that comes in handy on daily commutes as well as occupational hazard type situations.

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 represents a meaningful evolution in the accessible scrambler segment for Indian riders seeking versatility without complexity. Having examined this motorcycle closely, I find the 443cc long-stroke engine genuinely impressive for its application, delivering 25.4 bhp and 34 Nm of torque that provides satisfying low-end grunt for city commuting while maintaining highway composure. The addition of the sixth-speed gearbox over its predecessor proves particularly valuable, reducing vibration and improving fuel efficiency to around 29.5-30 kmpl. What resonates most is the practical approach to design: the reinforced chassis now supports top-box mounting, the 795mm seat height accommodates diverse rider builds, and switchable ABS offers confidence on varied surfaces. The 200mm ground clearance and dual-purpose tyres genuinely bridge urban and light off-road duties. Available in two variants—Trail and Force—priced competitively around 2.23 to 2.31 lakh rupees, the Scram 440 appeals to those prioritizing everyday usability. While the 196kg kerb weight suggests deliberate construction rather than sportiness, the overall package strikes an honest balance between economy, practicality, and genuine capability for Indian road conditions.

The Royal Enfield Scram has undergone a significant evolution that I find genuinely impressive for the Indian market. The latest 440 variant, which launched recently, brings meaningful upgrades over its predecessor that make it a more compelling choice for both city commuting and occasional weekend adventures. The engine displacement has grown from 411cc to 443cc, delivering 25.4 bhp and 34 Nm of torque, paired with a new 6-speed gearbox that replaces the older 5-speed unit. What strikes me most is the reinforced chassis that now supports a practical top box, something the previous generation couldn't accommodate. The dual-channel ABS is switchable, giving riders flexibility for off-road exploration while maintaining safety in urban conditions. The weight has increased slightly to 196 kg, but the motorcycle maintains the accessible 795mm seat height that makes it approachable for varied rider sizes. Available in two variants—Trail and Force—starting around 2.23 lakh rupees, the Scram 440 represents a thoughtful evolution that addresses real-world rider needs without sacrificing the affordable pricing that defines the brand's appeal in India.

I've been riding the Royal Enfield Scram 440 across Indian roads lately, and it truly shines as an updated successor to the 411, launched in January 2025 with a refined 443cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine pumping out 25.4bhp at 6250rpm and 34Nm at 4000rpm, paired to a slick six-speed gearbox that transforms highway cruising above 100kph into a relaxed affair with lower vibes and better top-end pull. Priced from Rs 2.23 lakh ex-showroom for the Trail variant with spoke wheels to Rs 2.31 lakh for the Force with alloys and tubeless tyres, on-road figures hover around Rs 2.54-2.89 lakh in Delhi, making it a smart buy against the Triumph Scrambler 400X. The 795mm seat height and upright ergonomics suit shorter riders and city traffic maneuvering, while 200mm ground clearance, long-travel suspension, and switchable ABS handle mild trails effortlessly, with real-world mileage hitting 27kmpl city and 41kmpl highway for over 400km range from the 15-litre tank. At 196kg kerb, it feels balanced once rolling despite parking heft, retaining that classic RE thump with modern touches like LED headlight and top-box provision, perfect for urban jaunts or weekend getaways without breaking the bank.

I've been riding the Royal Enfield Scram 440 extensively across Indian roads, from Delhi's chaotic traffic to highway stretches and mild off-road trails, and it stands out as a refined evolution tailored perfectly for our diverse conditions. Launched in January 2025, this 443cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine pumps out 25.4hp at 6250rpm and 34Nm at 4000rpm, paired with a slick 6-speed gearbox that includes a slip-and-assist clutch, making city crawls effortless and highway cruises up to 120kph vibration-free compared to the old 411's strained 5-speeder. The 795mm seat height suits shorter riders, while 200mm ground clearance and long-travel suspension handle potholes and gravel with ease; the Trail variant keeps spoke wheels for that classic scrambler vibe, but I prefer the Force's alloy wheels with tubeless tyres for puncture-prone Indian roads. On-road prices hover between ₹2.54-2.62 lakh in Delhi, delivering real-world mileage of 27kmpl city and 42kmpl highway from its 15-litre tank, yielding over 400km range. Upright ergonomics, switchable dual-channel ABS, and a reinforced subframe for top-box mounting make it versatile for daily commutes or weekend getaways, though at 196kg kerb it's a bit hefty for tight U-turns—still, the low-end torque pulls strongly without fuss.

Royal Enfield is speculated to be developing a 450 Scrambler based on the Himalayan 450, which could feature cast wheels, a lower seat height, and less suspension travel compared to the Himalayan. This bike is expected to be more street-oriented and may compete with the Triumph Scrambler 400X. I think this could be a great addition to their lineup, offering a balance between off-road capability and urban usability.

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 stands as a testament to Royal Enfield’s evolving adventure DNA, blending urban agility with off-road prowess.

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 stands as a testament to Royal Enfield’s evolving adventure DNA, blending urban agility with off-road prowess. Designed as a crossover motorcycle, the Scram 440 is engineered for riders who demand versatility—whether navigating city streets or tackling challenging terrains.

Engine and Performance

At the heart of the Scram 440 lies a robust 443cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, SOHC, air-cooled engine, featuring fuel injection for consistent performance. This powerplant delivers a maximum torque of 34 Nm at 4000 rpm and a peak power of 25.42 PS (approximately 18.7 kW) at 6250 rpm. The addition of a 6-speed gearbox—an upgrade from previous iterations—ensures smoother highway cruising and better fuel efficiency, making it suitable for both city commutes and long-distance touring.

The engine’s character is defined by its usable torque, which is available across a wide rev range, allowing for effortless overtaking and confident riding in varied conditions. The Scram 440’s improved NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) levels contribute to a more refined riding experience, even on extended journeys.

Chassis, Suspension, and Handling

The Scram 440 is built on a half-duplex split cradle frame, providing a sturdy foundation for both on-road stability and off-road resilience. The suspension setup comprises 41mm telescopic forks at the front with 190mm travel and a rear mono shock with linkage, offering 180mm wheel travel. This configuration, combined with a generous 200mm ground clearance, allows the Scram 440 to handle rough roads, mild trails, and urban obstacles with equal ease.

The motorcycle rides on dual-purpose tyres—100/90-19 at the front and 120/90-17 at the rear—mounted on either spoke or alloy wheels, depending on the variant. These tyres ensure confident grip on both tarmac and loose surfaces, enhancing the bike’s crossover appeal.

Braking and Safety Features

Safety is a key focus for the Scram 440. It features dual disc brakes—300mm at the front and 240mm at the rear—supported by a dual-channel ABS system. Notably, the rear ABS is switchable, allowing experienced riders to lock the rear wheel for controlled slides on low-traction surfaces, a boon for off-road enthusiasts.

Additional safety features include ABS brake assist, pass light, turn signals, and a robust lighting setup with LED headlamps for enhanced night time visibility.

Ergonomics and Comfort

The Scram 440 is designed with rider comfort in mind. Its low seat height of 795mm makes it accessible to a wide range of riders, while the upright riding position and ergonomic handlebar placement reduce fatigue during long rides. The kerb weight stands at 196 kg, striking a balance between stability and maneuver ability.

A 15-litre fuel tank offers a practical range, especially considering the bike’s mileage of approximately 29.5 kmpl under mixed riding conditions. This makes the Scram 440 a capable companion for both daily commutes and weekend adventures.

Technology and Features

Modern riders will appreciate the Scram 440’s semi-digital instrument console, which combines analogue and digital displays for speed, tachometer, odometer, tripmeter, and fuel gauge. Bluetooth connectivity and a USB charging port cater to tech-savvy users, while features like a service due indicator and mobile application integration add convenience.

The bike also comes with a TFT display, engine kill switch, clock, and passenger footrest, enhancing both utility and comfort for rider and pillion alike.

Design and Styling

Aesthetically, the Scram 440 retains the rugged, purposeful look synonymous with Royal Enfield’s adventure lineup. The motorcycle’s stance is accentuated by its high ground clearance, muscular tank, and dual-purpose tyres. Body graphics and a choice of bold colour schemes give it a youthful, dynamic appeal.

Buyers can choose between spoke wheels for classic scrambler looks or alloy wheels for added practicality, especially in case of punctures. The overall design strikes a balance between retro charm and modern functionality.

Variants and Pricing

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is available in two variants—Trail and Force—with prices ranging from ₹2.08 lakh to ₹2.15 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Both variants share the same mechanical underpinnings but may differ in cosmetic details and wheel options.

Recent Updates and Availability

As of May 2025, Royal Enfield has temporarily paused the sales, bookings, and deliveries of the Scram 440 due to an engine-related issue. Prospective buyers are advised to check with local dealerships for the latest updates on availability and waiting periods, which vary by region.

Conclusion

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is a compelling option for riders seeking a motorcycle that seamlessly blends urban practicality with adventure-ready capabilities. Its upgraded engine, refined ergonomics, advanced safety features, and modern amenities make it well-suited for both beginners and seasoned riders. Whether you’re navigating the daily urban maze or venturing off the beaten path, the Scram 440 is engineered to keep you in the game.
