Will the Kia EV5’s distinctive front bench seat option take off?

In the EV5, Kia has introduced a front bench seat option, at least for the Chinese market. However, this design is reminiscent of older cars, but reimagined for the electric age. There’s a fold down middle section of the front bench setup that can be used as an arm rest or small table. The front seating area is approached uniquely in this way using a different approach to the layout of the bucket seat that we have all become used to in modern cars. Because it offers potentially more versatility and another kind of comfort, especially for families. But it does leave certain safety questions, different driving scenarios, and whether or not consumers will readily embrace such a major departure from the norm. Front bench seats in a modern EV are raising questions about interior design innovation and what that may mean for future vehicle layouts.

Interesting, but I'll pass. I drive and like my personal space, this would feel cramped on long trips.

Love it! Car interiors are in need of a shake up. Every car doesn’t need the same boring layout, right?

I'm skeptical. I think it'd make spirited driving less exciting without bucket side bolsters.

Ride sharing could be changed forever by this. What if you picked up three passengers up front instead of just one?!

Nice idea, but I imagine it'll only be a hit in some markets. It won't catch on in places with stricter safety regulations.

I think it’s great for making the most of space in a compact EV. It’s thinking outside the box… or inside the box, as it were!

The idea is interesting, but I worry about safety. In a crash, what happens to that middle passenger? Are there even seatbelts?

I can see the appeal as a parent. A place to change diapers on the go and easy access to the back seat? Sign me up!

Nah, it's a gimmick. There's a reason modern cars have bucket seats, better support and safety. It’s a step backwards.

I'm all for it! Reminds me of road trips with my grandpa’s old Chevy. And it’s great for those quick naps at charging stations.
