Is the lower crash test rating of the Kia Carens X Line compensated by its safety features?

All three models of the Kia Carens (Including X Line variant) scored 3 stars in the Global NCAP crash tests. As many of you may already aware, this has been a point of concern for many potential buyers, particularly because it's a family car. But, on the X Line trim, you get a host of safety features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill start assist and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Kia says these active safety features increase the vehicle's overall safety, possibly preventing accidents before they happen. This is an intriguing debate about the appropriate balance between passive safety (crash protection) and active safety features on modern vehicles, and how high tech safety aids can mitigate structural deficiencies.

Crash tests are only part of safety. The features of the Carens X Line such as lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control prevent damage before accidents happen. I think that's real safety.

I think it's a bit of both. The active safety features are genuinely useful but the crash rating is disappointing. It is probably safer than the older cars, but still not as safe as it could be.

Definitely concerning with the 3 stars but fact remains, it is safer than most cars on Indian roads. In my book, the extra safety features in the X Line are a big plus.

I’m using cars with ADAS and I can say they make a huge difference in day to day safety. With all those features I would feel safer in a Carens than a "safer" car without.

It's a tough call. The ADAS features are really impressive, and could prevent a lot of accidents. Nevertheless, if you do wind up in a serious crash, you might want to have a sturdier car.

I think the people are overreacting regarding the crash test results. More safety features than most cars on the road, the X Line has. The ones that are more likely to keep you safe in real driving are those active safety systems.

No way. Poor structural integrity can't be fixed with all the fancy safety tech in the world. I wouldn't have my family in a car rated 3 stars no matter how many air bags it had.
