Is the KTM 390 SMC R too much of a bike for a beginner rider?
With supermoto styling and an impressive power to weight ratio the KTM 390 SMC R has created a lot of buzz. But some are concerned that those new to motorcycling might find its performance capability a little overwhelming. Though not entirely fit for a first bike because of the tall seat height, responsive throttle and potential for wheelies, among other factors, are creating plenty of debate concerning the suitability of the RR. However, its small manageable engine and modern safety features could be attractive to ambitious beginners wanting to learn their craft. This topic is often discussed with regard to rider responsibility, learning curves and learning on the proper bike, no matter what you start on.

It's all about self-control. It could be a great learner you won’t outgrow quickly, if you can resist the urge to hoon.

The real problem is the seat height. Shorter riders are gonna struggle at 860mm. The power's more of a concern for newbies than that.

It’s not perfect for complete beginners, but a great place for someone who already has some dirt bike experience but wants to get into street riding.

I got on a 600 supersport and survived. That would be cake compared to the 390 SMC R. Don't be stupid, just wear your gear.

It depends on the rider. If you're mature and make it easy in the beginning, you could totally learn on this. Stay away if you’re gonna be an idiot with the throttle though.

Are you kidding? That's a wheelie machine. It’s no way a newbie should start on it. Start with a 250 or 300 and work your way up.

No, it's great for beginners! The bike is pretty forgiving with the 390 engine, and has good safety features. If you respect the power, you'll be fine.
