India's E20 rollout after the Raipur Grand Vitara ruling: what should owners of pre-April 2023 petrol vehicles verify?
A Raipur consumer commission ruling reported on 16 July concerns a January 2023 Grand Vitara that was sold later and was found not to be E20-compatible. Separately, the government says E20-compatible vehicles can run on the fuel, while its July FAQ notes a lower energy content can affect mileage. This makes the practical question less about assuming every older vehicle will fail and more about checking the exact manufacturing date, owner's manual, fuel-compatibility label, dealer disclosure and written service guidance.
Before deciding what to do
- Find the manufacturing month/year and the fuel-compatibility statement in the manual or OEM material.
- Ask the dealer or OEM for a written response if a car was old stock when sold.
- Keep fuel and service records if a warning light, stalling or drivability issue begins.
For an older petrol car, which matters most in your decision: documented compatibility, mileage change, dealer accountability, repair support, or access to a suitable fuel? Please share the model year and evidence you would rely on—without assuming a single case proves the same fault for every vehicle.
