Could DC Avanti be a failure for the TAMO RaceMo?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
India's first indigenously developed sports car, the DC Avanti, ran into too many problems and failed to make much impact in the market. The build quality, performance, and value proposition were considered to be all historically bad. With Tata's backing, and presumably better engineering resources, the TAMO RaceMo seemed like it could have succeeded where the Avanti failed. But as the RaceMo never saw production, we can only guess how it might have stacked up. This is interesting because it begs to ask whether a made in India sports car is feasible and whether Tata could have done something about the issues that plagued the Avanti. Comparing these two projects help us understand the difficulties of a sports car project development and its marketing in the Indian context.

Success? Doubtful. It could have been a great learning experience for Tata in the performance car space.

It had a shot. The Avanti felt like a kit car, but the RaceMo felt like a properly engineered car from the ground up.

I think it would have struggled as well. It's just not a sports car culture here in India yet.

The RaceMo looked much more designed. If they had nailed the quality and the performance, it would have been a game changer.

It might, but only if Tata could price it right. The Avanti was too expensive for what you got.

No, it would have had the same problems. Low slung sports cars just aren't designed for Indian roads and driving conditions.

The RaceMo had much more potential. The Avanti would have had no chance against Tata with its engineering expertise and brand value.
