General information and overview

The Ford Freestyle is a crossover-styled compact car based on the Ford Figo but enhanced with higher ground clearance (190 mm), rugged body cladding, and bigger 15-inch alloy wheels for improved road presence and capability. It features a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 95 hp and 120 Nm torque mated to a smooth 5-speed manual gearbox, known for its light clutch and crisp shifting. Safety is robust, with up to six airbags, traction control, ABS with EBD, and Active Rollover Protection in higher trims. Inside, it has a spacious cabin with comfortable seating, decent boot space, and a responsive touchscreen infotainment system supporting smartphone integration via Ford Pass. The suspension setup strikes a balance between comfort and control, absorbing bumps skillfully. It combines the driving dynamics expected from Ford with cross-segment utility, making it well suited for urban duties and occasional rough roads. The Freestyle targets buyers who seek a practical daily driver with added style, safety, and spirited performance without moving to bulkier SUVs.

The Ford Freestyle is a crossover hatchback that combines the compact dimensions of the Ford Figo with enhanced ground clearance, rugged styling, and additional equipment for an SUV-like experience. It seats five and features a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 96 PS and 120 Nm torque, and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with 100 PS and 215 Nm torque, both paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car measures 3954 mm in length, 1737 mm in width, and has a wheelbase of 2490 mm, providing a balanced stance on Indian roads. It boasts safety features such as ABS, dual airbags, traction control, and hill assist, along with convenience equipment like automatic climate control and touchscreen infotainment in higher variants. With 190 mm ground clearance, it handles rough and uneven Indian road surfaces confidently. Boot space of 257 litres offers practical cargo room, while the overall build quality and handling reflect Ford's engineering focus on driving dynamics. The Freestyle is positioned as a practical, value-packed option for buyers seeking a compact vehicle with SUV flair and competent engine options within a budget.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Ford Freestyle stands out as a confident and engaging vehicle that blends the convenience of a compact hatchback with rugged crossover appeal. Its 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers a spirited 95 horsepower with smooth power delivery and a light clutch that makes city driving effortless. The well-weighted and communicative steering inspires confidence even at high speeds, while the suspension soaks up road irregularities impressively, making long highway drives comfortable. The high ground clearance of 190 mm adds surefootedness on rough roads, and features like six airbags in top trims and traction control enhance safety. Its ride quality and handling put it ahead of many rivals, making it a desirable choice for those wanting a fun-to-drive yet practical vehicle. However, the infotainment and suspension could be better, and the boot space is somewhat limited. Still, the Freestyle feels like a robust, refined package ideal for Indian roads, appealing to buyers looking for reliability, safety, and driving pleasure in one compact bundle.

The Ford Freestyle in India stands out as a rugged, practical compact utility vehicle that blends hatchback convenience with SUV-like features such as high ground clearance (190 mm) and muscular styling. The 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers a respectable 96 PS and 120 Nm of torque, making it well-suited for city and highway driving. The 1.5-litre diesel with 100 PS and 215 Nm torque offers a strong mid-range and good highway performance. It comes only with a 5-speed manual transmission, which may limit appeal for those seeking automatic options. However, the Freestyle impresses with a solid build, well-tuned suspension for Indian roads, and safety features like ABS, dual airbags, and traction control. Interior comfort is adequate with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and automatic climate control in higher trims, but rear seat space could feel a bit tight for taller occupants. Overall, it’s a good choice for buyers looking for a distinctive, affordable crossover with efficient engines and SUV-like utility without the bulk or price of larger SUVs. It competes effectively in the burgeoning compact crossover segment in India.

Recent news and announcements

The Ford Freestyle represents a pragmatic choice in India's entry-level crossover segment, offering a blend of ruggedness and practicality that appeals to budget-conscious buyers seeking SUV styling. Having spent considerable time with this vehicle, I find the 1.2-liter petrol engine impressively refined for its class, delivering 96 horsepower with smooth, linear power delivery that makes city driving effortless. The newer iteration brings a more responsive 6.5-inch touchscreen interface with Ford SYNC3, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility, which elevates the cabin experience significantly. Ground clearance of 190mm proves adequate for navigating India's varied road conditions, while the five-speed manual transmission remains light and manageable. Fuel efficiency figures of 18.5-24.4 kmpl depending on engine choice make this practical for daily commuting. The safety package, including ABS with EBD and dual airbags across variants, meets modern expectations. Where it falters is the absence of automatic transmission options and limited rear-seat comfort for longer journeys. Build quality feels honest rather than premium, though the overall construction withstands Indian road conditions well. For first-time buyers prioritizing value and versatility without premium pricing, the Freestyle delivers reasonable substance.

The Ford Freestyle remains a compelling choice in India's compact utility vehicle segment, offering impressive versatility at competitive pricing[6]. I find the dual engine options particularly appealing—the 1.2-litre petrol delivers 95 bhp with 19 kmpl efficiency, while the 1.5-litre diesel produces 98.96 bhp with exceptional 23.8 kmpl mileage[1][5]. Both engines pair with a smooth 5-speed manual transmission, and the diesel's 215 Nm torque makes it especially capable for Indian driving conditions[1]. The Freestyle's 190 mm ground clearance and reinforced suspension setup prove advantageous on varied road surfaces. I appreciate the comprehensive safety suite across variants, including dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ESP in higher trims[3]. The available four-trim lineup from Ambiente through Titanium Plus ensures flexibility, with the Titanium and Titanium Plus variants adding follow-me-home headlamps and automatic climate control[3]. Interior space accommodates five passengers comfortably with 257 litres of boot space[5]. Pricing remains attractive, making the Freestyle an excellent value proposition for buyers seeking a practical, efficient hatchback with crossover styling and robust performance capabilities suited to Indian road conditions.

The Ford Freestyle has been discontinued and is no longer in production in India, marking the end of an interesting chapter for this compact utility vehicle in the Indian market[1][2]. When it was available, the Freestyle offered compelling value in its segment, bridging the gap between traditional hatchbacks and SUVs with its crossover styling and practical features. The model came equipped with either a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 96 horsepower or a more efficient 1.5-litre diesel engine delivering 100 horsepower, both paired with a 5-speed manual transmission[2][4]. Pricing had ranged from approximately Rs 7.27 lakhs to Rs 9.03 lakhs for the final variants on offer[2]. The Freestyle's standout appeal lay in its 190mm ground clearance, spacious interior accommodation for five passengers, and respectable fuel efficiency figures of 18.5 kmpl for petrol and 23.8 kmpl for diesel variants[1][4]. However, despite these strengths and its competitive positioning against rivals like the Maruti Baleno and Tata Altroz, Ford's decision to withdraw from the Indian passenger vehicle market resulted in the Freestyle's discontinuation[1]. For potential used car buyers interested in this model, it represents an interesting alternative with distinctive styling and reliable engineering from Ford's Indian operations.

The Ford Freestyle has been discontinued and is no longer in production in India[5]. This compact utility vehicle, which was India's first CUV, represented an interesting chapter in Ford's Indian lineup as a stylish cross-hatchback positioned between traditional hatchbacks and SUVs. During its availability, the Freestyle offered buyers a choice between a 1.2-litre petrol engine delivering 96 horsepower and a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing approximately 99 horsepower, both paired with five-speed manual transmissions. The diesel variant was particularly popular among Indian buyers, offering an impressive 23.8 kmpl fuel efficiency. The vehicle came in multiple trim levels including Ambiente, Trend, Titanium, and the top-spec Flair Edition, with prices ranging from approximately Rs 5.81 lakh to Rs 9.03 lakh ex-showroom. Despite its attractive pricing, spacious interiors, good ground clearance of 190mm, and robust build quality that made it a decent value proposition, the Freestyle struggled to gain significant market traction against established competitors like the Maruti Swift and Hyundai i20, ultimately leading to its discontinuation.
February 19, 2026
Ford India has recalled certain Ford Freestyle models even after stopping production due to a diesel DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) issue. This move is part of the companys commitment to ensuring the safety and performance of its vehicles. I think this shows Fords dedication to customer satisfaction, even after theyve ceased production.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Ford Freestyle is priced competitively for its segment, with the ex-showroom price for the 1.2-litre Titanium+ variant hovering around Rs. 8.5 lakh, while the more affordable Trend variant is close to Rs. 6.44 lakh ex-showroom. On-road prices vary by city but typically range between Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 9.5 lakh depending on taxes, insurance, and registration costs. This pricing brackets the Freestyle between premium hatchbacks and entry-level SUVs, offering strong value for buyers keen on crossover styling and features without paying SUV premiums. Considering its build quality, safety features (including multiple airbags and ARP), and driving dynamics, the Freestyle’s price reflects its superior engineering compared to comparable models like the Toyota Etios Cross and Hyundai i20 Active. While newer competitors are emerging, the Freestyle's pricing remains attractive, especially for buyers prioritizing a versatile and practical urban plus weekend vehicle.
December 1, 2025
Ex-showroom prices of the Ford Freestyle in India range from about ₹7.27 lakh for the base petrol Titanium variant to around ₹9.03 lakh for the top diesel Titanium Plus variant. On-road prices vary by city due to differing taxes and insurance but are generally around ₹8.0–₹10.0 lakh for the range, including GST. The petrol variant is more affordable upfront, while diesel models cost more but offer better mileage, which may appeal to high-mileage users. Competitively priced against rivals like the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet, the Freestyle offers value with its unique positioning as a cross-hatchback and decent feature set. The lack of an automatic transmission, however, might deter some buyers in urban India preferring city-friendly autos. Considering Indian road conditions and fuel prices, its pricing is balanced, delivering SUV-like appeal at hatchback pricing, which could attract buyers moving up from smaller hatchbacks.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Ford Freestyle offers commendable mileage for Indian conditions, with reported real-world figures in the range of 17-19 km/l for the 1.2 petrol variant and approximately 20 km/l for diesel variants. This makes it economical to run, especially in city and highway mixes, helping keep fuel costs manageable. Its efficient engine and light clutch contribute to lower fatigue and better fuel economy, an important factor for daily commuters and long-distance travelers alike.
December 1, 2025
The 1.2-litre petrol Freestyle offers about 18.5 kmpl under ARAI ratings, and the 1.5-litre diesel can deliver as high as 23.8 kmpl. These mileage figures make the Freestyle economical for daily commuting and long drives, balancing performance and running costs well. For buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency and lower maintenance expenses, the diesel variant is more cost-effective for higher usage, while petrol suits moderate daily city driving.

The American multinational automaker, Ford has unraveled a cross-hatch version of the Ford Figo with a little more changes in the mix and have named it Ford Freestyle. It claims to be India’s first CUV.

The American multinational automaker, Ford has unraveled a cross-hatch version of the Ford Figo with a little more changes in the mix and have named it Ford Freestyle. It claims to be India’s first CUV.

For starters, some of the major changes include increased height, a new noteworthy front grille with a honeycomb design, increased bumper size with a silver skid plate and fender extensions, superior machine-cut 4-spoke alloy wheels, power tuning manifestation, C-shaped fog lamp enclosures and lot more.

The Ford Freestyle is the first Ford segment to acquire a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that is known to produce a maximum power of 96 HP @ 6500 rpm and an utmost torque of 120 NM @ 4250 rpm. The diesel variant gets a 1.5 Litre, In-line 4-Cylinder engine that produces a maximum power of 100 HP @ 3750 rpm and a torque of 215 NM @ 1750-3000 rpm.

The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a much lighter clutch to handle the traffic well. Coming to the rear of the car, a silver plastic skid plate, faux vents, and a raised bumper give an overall clean look. 189 mm of increased ground clearance makes the cross-hatch an edge to tackle the Indian roads more precisely.

You can see a fully loaded interior in the Ford Freestyle which is something different from the Figo hatchback. A reddish brown dashboard gives a much more vibrant look with an overall chocolate black look gives the car a fresh feel. It supports a 6.5-inch screen Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system which is a first for a Ford segment and is rather appealing.

The infotainment system gets two USB ports and is compatible with Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The keyless ignition, automatic climate control, convenient storage options and instrument cluster have taken the gear level up a bit. The car also gets Ford’s MyKey function that is perfect for managing the volume and speed limits to avoid any unwanted accidents.

Dual airbags and ABS are standard for every Freestyle model. Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Active Rollover Protection (ARP) and Traction Control (TSC) are also enabled in the higher versions of the cross-hatch.

The bookings for the Ford Freestyle will be starting on April 7, 2018, in India though, there has been no information regarding the launch date of the cross-hatch. We can expect somewhere near a month for its effective launch. When launched, it is expected to be priced in India at a starting price of INR 6.40 Lakh for the petrol variant and INR 7.30 Lakh for the diesel variant.
