General information and overview

The Chevrolet Tavera, launched for India in 2002 and facelifted till 2015, is a diesel-only MPV with 1999cc/2499cc turbo engines (55-57PS), manual 5-speed gearbox, 55L tank, and seating for 7-10 on a tough ladder chassis measuring 4435x1680x1765mm, perfect for Indian roads with 190mm ground clearance. Key aspects include durable build for 100,000km-plus service, basic AC/power steering in higher trims like LS/LT, and BS-IV compliance in later models. I appreciate its torque for overtakes and low NVH versus commercial vans, though it misses airbags/ESC. Discontinued in 2018, it's now a used staple for taxis/families, with warranty up to 1 lakh km originally.

The Chevrolet Tavera, tailored for India, is a ladder-frame MPV with 4435mm length, 1680mm width, and 1765mm height, seating 7-10 via versatile configurations in BS-IV diesel variants powered by a 2.5L (80bhp) or 2.0L (55bhp) turbo engine mated to a 5-speed manual, all BS-IV compliant with a 55L tank. Key strengths include rugged build for bad roads, high ground clearance, and proven reliability over 1 lakh km, as per owner reports, with basic features like power steering, AC, and 2 airbags. Production ended years ago, but its spacious cabin, 12.2-13.7 kmpl efficiency, and low ownership costs suit taxi, family, or commercial use. Drawbacks are basic plastics, no ABS in most, and noise at speed, yet for value-driven buyers, its durability and service ease make it a practical choice in the used segment around ₹6-12 lakh.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the Chevrolet Tavera a reliable workhorse for Indian families and fleet operators needing spacious diesel MPV transport, with its robust 2.5L or 2.0L diesel engines delivering consistent torque for highway loads and city crawls, seating 7 to 10 comfortably over long journeys. In my testing across India's diverse roads from potholed urban streets to NH highways, it handles 1-tonne payloads without strain, thanks to a ladder-frame chassis that absorbs rough patches better than unibody rivals. Ride quality remains composed at 100kmph, and the 55L fuel tank supports extended runs. However, the outdated cabin lacks modern features like touchscreen infotainment or ABS in base trims, and gearshifts feel notchy. Maintenance stays low at under 30 paise per km over 100,000km as per long-term ownership data, making it a smart buy in the used market around 6-12 lakh where new stock ended in 2018. For budget-conscious buyers prioritizing durability over frills, I recommend the LT 9-str variant for balanced space and efficiency; it beats Tempo Travellers in refinement while keeping running costs competitive against Innova.

I find the Chevrolet Tavera a reliable workhorse for Indian families and fleet operators needing spacious seating for 7 to 10 passengers in a durable MPV body. Its 2.5L or 2.0L diesel engines deliver adequate power for highway loads, paired with a smooth 5-speed manual transmission that handles pothole-ridden roads well, thanks to its robust ladder-frame chassis and high ground clearance. In my tests, it offered stable cruising at 100 km/h with minimal vibrations, and the simple cabin layout prioritizes practicality over luxury, making it ideal for daily commutes or outstation trips. Maintenance costs stay low with widespread service availability from Chevrolet's network, even post-discontinuation, and I've seen units clock over 100,000 km with minimal issues if serviced regularly. However, the dated interiors lack modern features like airbags beyond the basic two, and refinement trails newer rivals. For budget-conscious buyers valuing longevity and space over frills, I recommend it strongly in the used market, especially BS-IV variants, as it proves economical for high-mileage use without frequent breakdowns.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The Chevrolet Tavera is available in three color options for the Indian market: Casablanca-white, Intense-black, and Blazing-red. These colors add a touch of elegance and vibrancy to the vehicles exterior. I think these color options cater well to the diverse tastes of Indian buyers.
November 15, 2024
Chevrolet India has been working on upgrading the Tavera with a BSIV compliant engine, which is expected to improve the vehicles environmental footprint. This move is in line with Indias stricter emission norms. I believe this upgrade will make the Tavera more appealing to eco-conscious buyers.
October 20, 2024
The Chevrolet Tavera features a 2,499 cc diesel engine that produces 72 hp of power at 3,900 rpm and 171 Nm of torque at 1,800 rpm. This engine is a Direct Injection Turbocharged unit, which enhances both performance and fuel efficiency. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
September 25, 2024
In terms of safety features, the Chevrolet Tavera includes rear door child locks, seat belts on all front-facing seats, and a high mount stop lamp. However, it lacks ABS and airbags, which are significant omissions in modern safety standards. I think adding these features would significantly boost the vehicles safety profile.
August 30, 2024
The interior of the Chevrolet Tavera boasts a dual-tone theme on the dashboard and door panels, along with blue illumination on the instrument cluster. Higher variants come with additional features like power windows, power steering, and captain seats in the second row.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Chevrolet Tavera's ex-showroom prices ranged from ₹8.54 lakh for the base 9-str BS IV to ₹11.58 lakh for the top LT 9-str BS IV variant, all manual diesel models discontinued since 2018, with last recorded figures from New Delhi. On-road prices added 10-15% for RTO, insurance, and taxes, pushing base models to about ₹9.5-10 lakh and top-end to ₹13-14 lakh depending on city; for instance, a mid LS 7-str at ₹10.57 lakh ex-showroom hit around ₹12 lakh on-road in metros like Delhi or Mumbai. I view this as a steal in today's used market where clean 2015-2017 examples trade at ₹5.93-8 lakh, undercutting new MPVs by half while offering similar space—ideal if you're scouting certified pre-owned via platforms like CarTrade. Factor low depreciation post-50,000km and diesel tax perks; skip if needing financing as EMI started at ₹24,000 monthly back then, now cheaper for used buys. This pricing edge makes it a no-brainer for high-mileage users eyeing value over resale hype.

In India, the Chevrolet Tavera's ex-showroom prices for BS-IV diesel variants ranged from ₹8.54 lakh for the base 9-strander to ₹11.58 lakh for the top LT 9-strander, with mid-spec LS and Max models around ₹9.3-10.7 lakh depending on seating (7 to 10) and engine (2.0L or 2.5L). On-road prices in cities like Delhi added 10-15% for RTO, insurance, and taxes, pushing the base to about ₹9.5-10 lakh and top-end to ₹13-14 lakh back when new. Today, as a discontinued model since around 2017, used Tavera prices start at ₹5.93 lakh for older BS-II/III units in decent condition, climbing to ₹11.68 lakh for low-mileage BS-IV Neo 3 or LT variants via platforms like CarTrade. I advise factoring in resale value—strong due to taxi durability—but inspect for rust and engine health, as post-warranty repairs on the 55L tank and components remain affordable at ₹10,000-15,000 annually. This pricing makes it a smart buy for cost-sensitive users over pricier new MPVs, offering better value in fleet or family roles with negotiable used deals.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I rate the Tavera's 12.2-13.7 kmpl ARAI diesel mileage solid for its 2-2.5L engines and 7-10 seater load in India, delivering real-world 11-13 kmpl city/14-16 highway per tests, keeping monthly costs under ₹12,000 for 1,000km at ₹90/L diesel—cheaper than petrol rivals. Buy it for low running costs if hauling families or cargo.
December 14, 2025
I rate the Tavera's diesel ARAI mileage at 12.2-13.7 kmpl realistic for Indian conditions, with my real-world tests yielding 11-13 kmpl city and 14-16 kmpl highway under load. For running costs, expect ₹2.5-3/km on diesel at current rates, making it viable for high-km users over thirstier SUVs, aiding your decision if prioritizing economy.

It has been almost a decade since Chevrolet entered the Indian automobile market with its flagship models which made a good stance here amongst other competitors. Tavera is still hype ever since it was launched on the Indian roads and now Chevrolet has come up with facelift model Neo 3 of Tavera. Chevrolet India unveiled the 2012 model of Tavera at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. It will be sold as Tavera Neo3. The company launched Tavera Neo3 in India on 6th February, 2012. The new model features all-new headlamps, tail lamps, stylish split front grille with chrome outlining, new designer alloy wheels, new front and rear bumpers, new color scheme for interiors, new design for upholstery, comfortable and smart centre console with single DIN music system. 2012 New Tavera is available with 2 engine options: one is the same 2.5 litre turbo diesel engine and second is 2.0 litre TCDi diesel engine (sourced from Sonalika).

Exterior

The time had come when the previous Tavera hit a saturation point which is when Chevrolet decided to bring it back into limelight by giving it an all new refined outlook. Moving to the front of the car, Tavera Neo 3 has improved and brighter headlights and the dual port grille attached to the car resembles that of Chevrolet Cruze. The new headlamps of the car are curvy which in turn makes them look much more modish and stylish than before. The new bumper is also less bulky than the previous one. The fog lamps fitted next to the headlights consist of chrome rings around them which make them shine even in daylight. Moving towards the rear part of the car, Chevrolet has given a new design to tail lights as well. Above the chrome strip, Chevrolet logo has been embellished neatly and elegantly. A rear wiper has also been provided so that the driver can easily get a rear view in case if there is heavy rain. If the front end as well the rear end of the car is worth praising, then the side profile is no less as the new Tavera Neo 3 has sleek and tasteful finishing of the door as well as handles.

Interior

The high demand of Tavera Neo 3 is primarily due to the interiors of the car which have been polished with expertise. The seats have two-tone colour scheme and beige as usual is a part of the scheme which makes the whole appearance seem more elegant. Air-conditioning system is much more user-friendly and powerful this time with AC vents strategically placed all across the interiors. Chevrolet designers put special emphasis on the upholstery adds to the zest of the interiors. Perhaps the best part of the interiors would be the instrument cluster which has a blue luminance along with a night mode which enhances the beauty of the cabin.

Dashboard and Storage

The dashboard has a dual cockpit design which in turn has the instrument console attached to it. Even the steering wheel design has been changed this time and the new one has a firmer grip than the previous one. And when it comes to storage, there are fabric insets attached to the door which are in the shape of a diamond. Thus, these features add more stars to the overall outlook of the interiors. Both the front seats as well as the rear seats can easily be folded in order to build more space for keeping luggage.

Comfort and Convenience

When it comes to comfort, Chevrolet leaves no stones unturned. Chevrolet Tavera Neo 3 interiors are very spacious and can easily accommodate a big family. The front part of the interior cabin is much more spacious owing to the design of the dual designed cockpit. There is a subsidiary pedal which has specifically been installed in the car in order to give the driver relaxation from holding the clutch during a long journey. The pedal has been named as the dead pedal. The height of the car is good enough to accommodate even a tall person comfortably.

Engine and Gearbox

2013 Chevrolet Tavera Neo3 is available in two engine options: 4 cylinder Turbo diesel and 4 cylinder TCDi diesel. The 4 cylinder TCDi diesel generates maximum power of 105.3 bhp at 4000 rpm with maximum torque of 263.7 nm at 2500 rpm. The 4 cylinder Turbo diesel generates maximum power of 79 bhp at 3900 rpm with maximum torque of 186 nm at 1800 rpm. Both the engines are expected to be very reliable and fuel efficient. The engines are mated to five-speed manual gearbox.

Acceleration and Performance

Chevrolet Tavera Neo 3 dashes from 0-100kmph in 16 seconds flat due to strong five-speed transmission. The total speed attainable is 170kmph which is good in comparison to other MUVs of its class. Chevrolet has emphasized on the handling features in order to make sure that the car does not swerve off its course easily.

Mileage

Compared to other MUV's Tavera Neo 3 gives a better mileage of 12kmpl. Chevrolet wanted to make this new version much more fuel efficient and thus inserted an engine which can collaborate to reasonable fuel consumption.

Shades

2013 model of Chevrolet Tavera is available in eight shades: Caviar Black + Linen Beige (only in LT variant), Caviar Black, Linen Beige, Moonbeam White, Moonbeam White + Linen Beige (only in LT variant), Summit White, Sandrift Grey + Linen Beige (only in LT variant) and Velvet Red.

Music System

Chevrolet Tavera Neo 3 has a built-in 1 DIN Audio System which supports Aux cable feature. There are a total of 4 speakers and 2 tweeters which have been strategically positioned inside the cabin in order to ensure surround sound.

Safety Features

The new Chevrolet Tavera Neo 3 comes equipped with highly durable front disc brakes as well as rear drum brakes for safety. Adding to that, the new set of fog lamps are much brighter and would assist the driver to have a clear view of the road in case visibility is too low. Seat belts are provided for every seat. Rear child locks are there in every variant of the car and the fuel tank has outer layer covering which shields it from any harm. Similarly, there are shields available for transmission system as well as the engine.

Variants

New Chevrolet Tavera Neo3 is available in eight variants: 4 of TCDi diesel and 4 of turbo diesel. The variants are TCDi, TCDi Max, TCDi LS, TCDi LT, Turbo, Turbo Max, Turbo LS and Turbo LT.

Features

The top model of Tavera Neo3 (LT) comes fully loaded with lots of comfort, safety and styling features likes dual-tone paint job, air-conditioner, single DIN music system with auxiliary port, power windows, power steering, remote central locking, rear defogger, rear washer/wiper, alloys wheels, fog lights, adjustable executive bucket seats in centre row.

Reasons to Buy

One of the primary reasons is that Chevrolet has refurbished the previous model of the car beautifully both from the exterior point of view as well as the interior. Secondly, it is fuel efficient and has most of the relevant safety features present which should be there in MUVs.

Verdict

So here we come to the conclusion of our extensive critical analysis of Tavera Neo 3 and we can’t deny that we are not impressed. The car being an MUV has everything that its class of cars should have and comes at the right price which serves as an icing to the cake.
