General information and overview

The Mahindra Gusto 125 is a commuter-friendly scooter powered by a 124.6cc, air-cooled, four-stroke engine producing about 8.5 to 9 bhp and 10 Nm torque, ensuring smooth power delivery well-suited for urban traffic and varied road conditions. It features an adjustable seat height for rider comfort, 12-inch tubeless tires offering better grip, and telescopic suspension calibrated to tame Indian roads and potholes. The scooter’s design combines a spacious, well-padded seat with a moderate fuel tank capacity of 6 liters for extended city runs. Braking setup includes effective front and rear brakes capable of reassuring stops even with two riders. Safety is enhanced by features like a side-stand indicator to prevent accidents. Despite offering great handling and comfort, its under-seat storage capacity is somewhat limited, which might affect practicality for some users. Overall, the Gusto 125 blends economy, comfort, and manageable power, making it a very appealing option for daily riders navigating Indian cities.

The Mahindra Gusto 125 is a 125cc automatic scooter engineered specifically for the Indian market, featuring a fuel-injected, four-stroke, air-cooled engine that complies with BS6 Stage 2 emission standards. I find this scooter to be a well-rounded commuter that prioritizes reliability and everyday usability over flashy performance. The engine produces 9.5 BHP at peak output with 10.2 Nm of torque, delivering what I consider smooth and responsive power delivery ideal for navigating urban traffic conditions. The scooter weighs approximately 120 kg, contributing to nimble handling that I've found particularly useful in congested Indian city environments. The suspension is expertly tuned for Indian road conditions, absorbing potholes and bumps effectively without transmitting harshness to riders. I appreciate the comprehensive feature set including an adjustable seat height accommodating different rider frames, a side stand cut-off safety feature, an engine kill switch, and USB charging in the storage compartment for modern convenience. The braking system offers impressive stopping performance even under loaded conditions with a pillion rider. The scooter's design emphasizes practicality with its spacious yet compact architecture, allowing comfortable riding positions for extended periods. I believe the Gusto 125 represents thoughtful engineering focused on what Indian riders genuinely need for daily transportation rather than aspirational features that add cost without functional benefit.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Mahindra Gusto 125 stands out as a practical scooter tailored for urban commuting and occasional longer rides. Its smooth and responsive 125cc engine delivers decent power and manageable handling, making city traffic navigation effortless. The ride quality excels with well-tuned suspension that absorbs Indian road irregularities comfortably, while the long, cushioned seat enhances rider and pillion comfort. Braking performance is commendable, ensuring safety in sudden stops. While pickup is adequate, the scooter’s real strength lies in its balance between power, comfort, and efficiency. However, storage under the seat feels limited compared to competitors, which might concern buyers needing more cargo space. Overall, it remains a strong contender in its segment, especially for riders seeking a fuss-free, economical daily commuter with reliable ride stability and an efficient fuel system.
December 4, 2025
The Mahindra Gusto 125 represents a thoughtfully engineered solution for India's daily commuting needs, and I find it to be a compelling choice for riders seeking practicality without compromise. What stands out to me is how Mahindra has refined this scooter's core strengths while addressing real-world usage patterns that Indian riders face. The 125cc fuel-injected engine delivers a respectable 9.5 BHP with 10.2 Nm of torque, providing smooth acceleration through city traffic without feeling underpowered during highway merges. I particularly appreciate the CVT gearbox that eliminates the jerky gear changes common in budget scooters, making longer commutes considerably more comfortable. The adjustable seat height is genuinely useful for riders of different builds, which I've found addresses a gap in the segment. However, I must note that the under-seat storage falls short of expectations—a limitation worth considering if you carry substantial daily essentials. The braking performance is genuinely impressive for this category, offering confident stopping power even with a pillion. Overall, I believe this scooter delivers strong value for the price, especially if your priorities align with reliability, comfort, and everyday practicality rather than performance thrills.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The Mahindra Gusto RS edition was launched, featuring visual tweaks including a new paint scheme, body graphics, and RS badging. There were no mechanical changes in this edition, and it was priced at Rs. 48,180. This update was likely aimed at keeping the model fresh in the market. I think such cosmetic updates can keep a model relevant without significant investment.
October 16, 2017
The Mahindra Gusto 125 was launched in 8 more states in India, expanding its availability across the country. This move was part of Mahindras strategy to increase its market share in the scooter segment. Prices for the Gusto 125 started at Rs. 48,410. I think this expansion helped Mahindra tap into a broader customer base.
June 17, 2016
Mahindra launched a special edition of the Gusto scooter, priced at Rs. 49,350 (ex-showroom Delhi). This special edition was introduced to capitalize on the festive season demand and featured cosmetic updates such as new paint schemes and body graphics. Pricing details and changes

The Mahindra Gusto 125 was priced competitively in India, with ex-showroom rates starting around Rs 50,680 for the base variant, reaching up to about Rs 60,000 depending on the city and variant specifics. On-road prices vary with location due to differing state taxes and insurance, typically adding Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 to the ex-showroom figure in metros like Delhi or Mumbai. This places the Gusto 125 in the entry-level to mid-range scooter bracket, offering good value for features like height-adjustable seats, telescopic suspension, and tubeless tires. Given its blend of performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency features at this price point, it is positioned well for budget-conscious urban buyers looking for reliability without compromising essential amenities. However, buyers should consider the overall running costs and service network before making a final call.
December 4, 2025
The Mahindra Gusto 125 carries an ex-showroom price range of approximately Rs. 48,500 to Rs. 61,293, though I should note that the current model appears to be discontinued in some markets, which may affect availability and pricing through dealers. When calculating on-road costs in India, you'd typically add registration, insurance, and road tax, which collectively can increase the total investment by Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 12,000 depending on your state and local regulations. From my perspective as someone who evaluates value propositions regularly, this pricing positions the Gusto competitively within the 125cc automatic scooter segment. The relatively affordable entry price combined with Mahindra's service network accessibility makes it an economical choice for first-time buyers or those upgrading from 100cc models. The fuel tank capacity of 6 liters is notably the largest in its segment, which I find translates to extended range between refueling and lower per-kilometer fuel costs. While the initial purchase price might appear fractionally higher than some competitors, I believe the total cost of ownership remains attractive when factoring in fuel efficiency, affordable service costs, and maintenance expenses that buyers report as reasonable through Mahindra's service centers across India.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Mahindra Gusto 125 delivers an impressive mileage of around 50 to 55 km per litre under typical Indian city driving conditions. This fuel efficiency is a major advantage for cost-conscious riders, as it significantly reduces running expenses over time. Its engine tuning favors economy without sacrificing moderate performance, making it ideal for daily commuting and longer rides alike.
December 4, 2025
I've observed from real-world usage data that the Mahindra Gusto 125 consistently delivers between 50 to 55 km/l under typical Indian riding conditions, with some owners reporting even up to 61 km/l under optimal circumstances. From my analysis, this makes it one of the more efficient 125cc scooters for daily commuting, particularly when utilizing the Eco Mode feature that further optimizes fuel consumption. For someone concerned about running costs, this translates to impressively low per-kilometer expenses that I find justify the purchase investment over time. The fuel-injected engine ensures responsive throttle delivery while maintaining this excellent mileage, a balance that many competitors struggle to achieve. I recommend avoiding aggressive acceleration patterns to maintain these figures, as city riding naturally yields better efficiency than highway speeds. The 6-liter fuel tank capacity means you're visiting fuel pumps less frequently, which I find particularly valuable for urban commuters dealing with congested traffic scenarios.

Mahindra has been struggling hard to stay up in the scooter market from a long time and this time, they brought something really interesting, making the user think once before going for some other option. The new Mahindra Gusto is a feature packed scooter having some things which other scooters can't even dream of having at present. After all these features, the price still competes all and the market strategy is expected to bring some change to the company sales.

The Mahindra Gusto is a scooter that aims to stand out in the crowded two-wheeler market in India. With its unique features and design, it promises a comfortable ride for daily commuting. In this review, we'll explore various aspects of the Gusto, from its design to performance, and see if it lives up to the hype.

Key Takeaways

  • The Mahindra Gusto features a height-adjustable seat, making it suitable for riders of different heights.
  • With a 109cc engine, it offers decent power for city riding but struggles with fuel efficiency due to its weight.
  • The braking system performs well, even without a front disc brake, providing confidence at various speeds.
  • Comfortable seating and good suspension enhance the riding experience, especially on bumpy roads.
  • Overall, the Gusto presents a good value for money proposition with its unique features compared to competitors.

Design and Styling of Mahindra Gusto

Unique Front Grille and Indicators

The Mahindra Gusto stands out with its distinctive front grille that adds a unique touch to its overall look. The contemporary indicators and LED pilot lamps enhance its modern appeal, making it a visually appealing scooter.

Tail Lamp and Reflector Design

The tail lamp design is quite funky, featuring the Mahindra name in a glossy black enclosure. Additionally, a reflector above the number plate ensures safety and visibility, making it a practical choice for riders.

Height Adjustable Seat Mechanism

One of the standout features of the Gusto is its height-adjustable seat. This mechanism allows riders of different heights to find their comfort zone, making it a versatile option for many. This feature is especially beneficial for shorter riders, as it provides a significant adjustment range.

The Mahindra Gusto combines style with functionality, making it a strong contender in the scooter market.

In summary, the design and styling of the Mahindra Gusto reflect a blend of modern aesthetics and practical features, appealing to a wide range of riders.

Engine Performance and Specifications

Engine Power and Torque

The Mahindra Gusto is equipped with a 110cc engine that delivers a power output of around 8 bhp and a torque of approximately 9 Nm. This setup is designed to provide decent performance for city commuting.

Fuel Efficiency Concerns

One of the major complaints from users is about fuel efficiency. While the company claims a mileage of 63 kmpl, many riders report actual mileage closer to 30 kmpl. This discrepancy raises concerns about the scooter's fuel economy.

Top Speed and Highway Performance

The Gusto can reach a top speed of about 85 km/h. However, riders have noted that it struggles with maintaining speed when carrying two passengers, which can be a drawback for those planning longer trips.

The Mahindra Gusto offers a mix of performance and features, but its fuel efficiency leaves much to be desired.

SpecificationValue
Engine Displacement110cc
Power Output8 bhp
Torque9 Nm
Top Speed85 km/h
Claimed Mileage63 kmpl
Actual Mileage~30 kmpl

In summary, while the Mahindra Gusto has some appealing features, its engine performance and fuel efficiency are areas that need improvement.

Comfort and Riding Experience

Seat Comfort and Bolstering

The Mahindra Gusto offers a comfortable seat that is well-padded and designed for long rides. Riders have noted that the bolstering provides good support, making it suitable for daily commutes. The height-adjustable seat is a standout feature, allowing riders to find their perfect position.

Handlebar Position for Daily Riding

The handlebar is positioned well for most riders, ensuring a natural grip. This design helps reduce strain on the back and arms during longer rides. Many users appreciate how the handlebar setup contributes to a more relaxed riding posture.

Legroom for Tall Riders

Tall riders often face challenges with legroom on scooters, but the Gusto has been designed with this in mind. The spacious legroom allows for a comfortable riding experience, even for those who are taller. This feature is particularly beneficial during longer journeys.

The Mahindra Gusto is designed to provide a pleasant riding experience, making it a great choice for daily use.

In summary, the Gusto excels in comfort with its adjustable seat, well-placed handlebars, and ample legroom, making it a solid option for riders of all sizes.

Braking and Safety Features

Braking Performance Without Front Disc

The Mahindra Gusto comes with a rear drum brake, which is common in many scooters. While it provides adequate stopping power for city riding, it may not be as effective during high-speed situations. Riders should be cautious, especially when navigating busy streets or highways.

Tyre Grip and Stability

The scooter is equipped with standard tyres that offer decent grip on various surfaces. Here are some key points regarding tyre performance:

  • Good traction on dry roads
  • Moderate performance in wet conditions
  • Stability is acceptable for daily commuting

Safety Features Overview

The Gusto includes several safety features, although it lacks advanced options found in some competitors. Key safety features include:

  • Standard rear drum brakes
  • Basic reflector lights for visibility
  • A sturdy frame that enhances rider protection

The Mahindra Gusto is designed for everyday use, but riders should be aware of its limitations, especially regarding braking performance at higher speeds.

Suspension and Ride Quality

Front Telescopic Suspension

The Mahindra Gusto features a front telescopic suspension that aims to provide a smoother ride. This design helps absorb bumps and uneven surfaces, making daily commutes more comfortable. However, some users have noted that it may not perform as well under heavy loads.

Rear Monoshock Setup

The rear monoshock setup is designed to enhance stability and comfort. It allows for better handling, especially when navigating through city traffic. Riders have reported that this setup contributes positively to the overall ride experience.

Handling and Ride Comfort

When it comes to handling, the Gusto has mixed reviews. Here are some key points:

  • Stability: Generally stable at lower speeds but can feel less secure at higher speeds.
  • Comfort: The seat is designed for comfort, but some riders find it lacking during long rides.
  • Weight: The scooter's weight can affect its maneuverability, especially for new riders.

Overall, while the Mahindra Gusto offers decent suspension and ride quality, improvements could be made for better performance, especially when carrying passengers or riding on gradients.

Storage and Practicality

Under-Seat Storage Space

The Mahindra Gusto offers a decent under-seat storage area, but it may not be enough for everyone. Many users have noted that while it can hold a helmet, it lacks space for additional items like bags or groceries. This can be a drawback for those who need to carry more on their daily rides.

Legroom for Carrying Bags

When it comes to carrying bags, the Gusto provides reasonable legroom. However, taller riders might find it a bit cramped when trying to fit larger items. Here are some points to consider:

  • The seat height is adjustable, which helps with comfort.
  • The footboard is spacious enough for small bags.
  • Larger items may require creative positioning.

Additional Storage Options

In addition to the under-seat space, the Gusto has some other storage features:

  • Front storage compartment: Useful for small items like keys or a phone.
  • Hooks for bags: Located near the footboard, these can help secure bags while riding.
  • Optional accessories: Some riders opt for additional storage solutions like side bags.

Overall, while the Mahindra Gusto has some practical storage features, it may not meet the needs of all riders, especially those who require more space for their belongings.

User Reviews and Ratings

Overall User Satisfaction

The Mahindra Gusto has received a mixed response from users, with an average rating of 3.7 out of 5 based on 102 ratings. This indicates that while many riders appreciate its features, there are also areas for improvement.
