Lamborghini says uncertainty over how the India-EU free trade agreement will treat plug-in hybrid vehicles is influencing customer decisions in India. The issue is particularly relevant because the brand's current model range is entirely hybrid, while duty reductions for some pure internal-combustion European imports may become clearer sooner.

President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar India that buyers are waiting for clarity. The precise policy timetable and final treatment of PHEVs still require official confirmation, so a near-term Lamborghini price reduction should not be assumed.

Why Lamborghini faces a different FTA question

A conventional petrol import and a plug-in hybrid may fall under different tariff categories or implementation schedules. Lamborghini's current portfolio uses hybrid powertrains, which means the brand cannot necessarily benefit on the same timetable as a manufacturer importing a pure-ICE model.

The difference is not merely technical. Import duty affects the landed cost on which other taxes and margins are built, so uncertainty can cause buyers to delay orders while they wait to see whether a future policy change materially alters prices.

Why Lamborghini remains committed to hybrids

The company says customers are not adopting full-electric supercars at the pace once expected. Hybrid systems therefore remain central to its strategy, combining combustion-engine character with electric assistance and emissions improvements.

That product direction means Indian policy for PHEVs has greater importance for Lamborghini than a temporary choice between powertrains. The brand cannot simply substitute a conventional model solely to obtain a tariff advantage without changing its global product strategy.

Biofuel is another long-term possibility

Winkelmann also said any Lamborghini biofuel decision would depend on suitable fuel quality, including at least 95 octane. This is a technical prerequisite rather than a confirmed India product plan. Availability, standards and supply would all need to support consistent operation.

What luxury-car buyers should do

Buyers should compare the current confirmed ex-showroom price and delivery terms with any future officially notified benefit. Dealer estimates or speculative calculations cannot substitute for a government notification and a revised manufacturer price list.

Even when a duty change is announced, the retail effect can vary by model, homologation category, quota, origin rules and the timing of imported inventory. A headline tariff rate does not automatically translate into an identical percentage reduction in the showroom price.

Frequently asked questions

Will Lamborghini prices fall because of the India-EU FTA?

That remains uncertain for plug-in hybrids. Final duty treatment, timing and any retail-price revision require official confirmation.

Why are Lamborghini buyers waiting?

The CEO says uncertainty over potential PHEV benefits is affecting decisions, as customers do not want to purchase immediately before a possible policy-led change.

Does Lamborghini sell pure-electric cars in India?

The current range discussed in the interview is hybrid-only. The company says full-EV adoption among its customers has been slower than expected.

Is a four-year PHEV timeline official?

The timing mentioned in coverage should remain attributed to the CEO unless and until an Indian government notification confirms implementation details.
