Will the KTM RC 490 eat sales away from the RC 390 or the larger 890 models?

The introduction of the RC 490 by KTM has led to some discussion of what effect, if any, it will have on the rest of the company's lineup. However, some enthusiasts fear this could eat into the sales of the popular RC 390, which is a favorite among track day enthusiasts and beginners. Some believe it might also divert customers from the bigger and pricier 890 lines, however. The talk is whether the RC 490 fills a legitimate hole in the market or isn't really making any essential progress in the lineup of KTM. Additionally, there is thought to this new model and how it might impact KTM’s brand strategy as a whole and how it will assist or deter the company from the sportbike segment.

Perhaps it's geared toward a completely different market, like emerging countries where purchasing a bigger bike is over their heads.

If the price is close to the 890, then that could be a problem. But they have to position it just right.

KTM knows what they're doing. If they thought it would hurt their other models, they wouldn't release it.

I think 890 sales will hurt more. The 490 should be enough bike for many riders.

In reality, it could actually help drive overall sales by establishing a clear upgrade path in the KTM family.

No, the 390 and 890 have their own fan base (pun intended). Its own crowd will be attracted to the 490.

It’ll take some RC 390 sales for sure. So why would you spend a little bit more on that extra power?
