What’s new with the E-Clutch on the 2024 CB650R?

The 2024 CB650R is one of the first manual transmission motorcycles to have the E-Clutch system introduced by Honda. By this system, riders can shift gears without use of the clutch lever, which may make riding easier, more convenient, and more accessible, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. But purists will note, however, that it may detract from the traditional riding experience. This feature’s introduction has sparked talk about how motorcycle technology is evolving, how the development of a rider’s skills is changing, and the balance between convenience and engagement with riding. Riders are splitting hairs over whether this feature is a welcome addition or an unwelcome addition to what was already a well-loved bike.

It could be great for newer riders who could spend less time on clutch control and more time on road awareness.

I'm on the fence. So it's innovative, but I'm afraid it will somewhat remove the skill of riding.

The tech is cool, but I love the traditional feel of it. Maybe I'm just old school.

But for track days, I'm excited about it. So that might help shave off some lap times.

I test rode one, and it’s actually fairly intuitive. You still have a connection to the bike.

But I hope that it doesn’t give people an excuse to be lazy about learning proper technique since it’s great for beginners.

I wonder if it’s going to ruin the bike’s reliability. The more electronics you have, the more potential issues you have.

For someone with hand issues, the E-Clutch could be the difference maker for longer rides.

I'm not sure about this. It’s part of the fun of riding—the clutch control.

I love the idea! It will make city riding so much easier, particularly in heavy traffic.
