The Maruti Tour H1: Is it really just a stripped down Alto for taxi drivers or does it have some hidden gems?

Maruti Tour H1 is a commercial taxi specific variant based on the popular Alto. It’s tempting to think that it is just a boring, no frills version of the Alto, but perhaps there’s more to it than that. Others say that its design is simpler, and therefore more durable and easier to maintain over the long haul. Naturally, others argue that the omission of some features reduces its useability as a personal device. The debate also rages over whether the Tour H1's particular modifications, such as the speed limiter, actually make it safer to drive or merely more irritating to drive. Some also wonder if the lower price point and presumably better fuel efficiency make it an attractive option for budget conscious private buyers, not just taxi operators. So let’s look at some different takes on what the Tour H1 actually brings to the table and whether it deserves more credit than it’s given.

I feel that we all are forgetting that cars like the Tour H1 are the ones that are helping keep transportation affordable in India. That's not something everyone can afford to splurge on fancy features, but if this does help keep taxi fares down, well, isn't that a good thing for everyone?

You’re missing the point here, you guys. A few mods and the Tour H1 could make for a great base for a budget rally car or autocross machine. You strip it down even further, throw in some performance bits and now you have a fun little pocket rocket!

I used a Tour H1 for my small business, and it has its merits. It’s a simplified design and it has fewer things to break, and it’s easy to maintain. On top of that, the fuel efficiency is no joke, it's a real money saver in the long run.

Hidden gems? It’s more like hidden cost cutting! Maruti is just trying to get more profit out of old platform. If they actually cared about taxi drivers they'd find better safety features instead of stripping them down.

I believe neither of you are getting the point. The Tour H1 is not meant to be compared to the regular Alto, it is meant for a particular purpose. It’s actually pretty brilliant for taxi drivers who need reliability and low running costs. Less is sometimes more, right?

Are you kidding me? The Tour H1 is a total downgrade. Back no power windows, cheaper interior materials and that speed limiter that is so annoying? They took all the fun out of the Alto and left us with a soulless econobox.

I've driven both the regular Alto and the Tour H1 and to be honest, the differences aren't that much different from those that people make it out to be. Of course, you lose some bells and whistles, but the heart and soul of what makes the Alto great is still there. I kinda dig the Tour H1 feeling more purpose built.
