The EQS 450 4Matic's exterior design grows on you over time, but is it a deal-breaker?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
The Mercedes EQS 450 4Matic exterior design has been controversial since its reveal. The EQS departs significantly from traditional Mercedes styling to an ultra aerodynamic shape fit for an electric car. This radical design shift has created polar opinions; some praising it as futuristic and some calling it boring, and possibly even unattractive. The controversial part of the 'one-bow' design has been its functionality in reducing drag. There are those who say it’s ahead of its time and will age well with more EVs taking similar form, while others say it lacks the presence and elegance that a flagship Mercedes model should have. It's a debate which often stretches into a broader debate about the balance between form and function in EV design, and whether or not distinctive styling should be sacrificed for the sake of efficiency.

I still think the front end is too plain, but it's grown on me. From the front it could have looked like a proper Mercedes.

I'm still on the fence. For some angles it looks great, for others not so much. I will say, however, that it does look better in darker colors that hide some of those bulbous shapes.

That’s a polarizing design, but I think that’s the point. It's supposed to look different and mean the move to EVs. It’s successful in that sense, even though it’s not conventionally beautiful.

It's a grower, not a shower. I think it looks much better in person and in motion than in photos. And the interior is so nice you forget about the exterior while driving it.

I liked it from the start, actually. It’s futuristic and not like any car out on the streets. The smooth EQS is a welcome sight in a sea of aggressive looking SUVs.

Still nope, still can't get over it. To me it looks like a melted S Class. I can understand the aero thing but Mercedes could have made it look a bit more unique.

It definitely grows on you. I thought it was a blob at first, but I love the sleekness now. It's all about aerodynamics and once you get that it all makes sense.
