So how will the G 580 Edition One’s limited customization options affect its appeal to traditional G-Wagen enthusiasts?

Customization has long been the G-Wagen’s thing, and buyers have been able to create vehicles that are truly unique to them. But the G 580 Edition One is much more limited, with just five exterior colors, one wheel design and one interior trim. The departure from the traditional G-Wagen buying experience has set off a debate among enthusiasts. Lack of options, they say, keep the Edition One exclusive and production simple, but others say it runs counter to the spirit of personalization G-Wagen owners have come to expect. It also explores whether this constrained customization is just a first edition thing or a permanent feature in future electric G-Wagen models.

It’s not ideal, but let’s be real, most G Wagen buyers just get black on black anyway. This won’t be a deal breaker for the target market.

I believe it’s a missed opportunity. For lack of traditional options, they could have offered some unique, electric specific customization options.

Factory options are who cares? As always, the aftermarket will step up and offer plenty of customization possibilities. The real personalization happens anyway, though.

I am a G-Wagen enthusiast and I’m disappointed. I get it though, it’s new tech and they probably want to keep it simple for the first run.

Mercedes have made a smart move. By limiting options they streamline production and get an idea of which configurations do and don’t sell so they can do things differently with future models.

I actually like the limited options. It adds a special and exclusive feel to the Edition One. And it will probably help with resale value down the line.

It's a huge letdown. The fun of getting a G Wagen is half the fun of making it uniquely your own. I think it's taking away from the G-Wagen experience.
