Motorcycle tyre replacement in India: should age, tread depth, cracks or kilometres decide before a highway trip?
Motorcycle tyres do not become safe or unsafe at one universal kilometre reading. Before a highway or mountain trip, age, tread, cracking, deformation, pressure loss, repair history and the planned load all matter. A tyre can have visible tread yet be unsuitable because its rubber and structure have aged.
Signals to check together
| Signal | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing age | Rubber changes over time even when annual kilometres are low |
| Tread and wear indicators | Low or uneven tread reduces wet grip and can point to pressure or alignment issues |
| Cracks, cuts, bulges or deformation | Visible structural warning signs need professional inspection and may require replacement |
| Pressure loss and repairs | Repeated leakage or multiple repairs can change the risk assessment for sustained highway speeds |
| Trip conditions | Pillion load, luggage, rain, heat, rough roads and limited roadside support reduce the margin for doubt |
Age guidance is a ceiling, not a guarantee
Michelin advises annual professional inspection after five years of use and precautionary replacement by ten years from manufacture. That does not mean every tyre is safe until those ages: damage, wear or poor storage can require replacement earlier. The motorcycle maker's pressure, size and load recommendations also remain important.
What would make you replace before touring?
Would age alone change your decision when tread still looks usable, or would cracks, handling changes and repair history carry more weight? A remote discussion cannot certify a tyre, so an in-person tyre inspection is the sensible final check before a long trip.
