Is the pound sterling worth the penny for the Land Cruiser 300?

Top end models of the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series sell for nearly $170,000. It's a workhorse on and off the road and is lauded for its legendary reliability, but plenty think that when compared to top competitors from European luxury SUVs, the tech and interior quality don't quite measure up to the price tag. The vehicle is strong, and has a following, however some question whether the expense is well worth its features and performance. For some, the Land Cruiser's durability and resell value wins out against some other brands that they feel provide more advanced features and comfort for the same price. The corner the Land Cruiser walks is the balance that needs to be struck between sticking to its roots — its rugged genetics, if you will — and what modern luxury SUV buyers expect.

If you appreciate the heritage and capabilities of the Land Cruiser, it’s worth it. It's not out there to be a tech laden luxury SUV, it's an honest go anywhere, do everything vehicle that also happens to be comfortable.

It's overpriced, I think, for what you get. The fuel economy is terrible, and for the luxury SUV it feels very dated. The premium for the name is what you’re paying.

It's not cheap, but you are paying for obsessive engineering from Toyota and a huge amount of testing. That vehicle is overbuilt to last every part of that. It’s not just about features, it’s about lasting.

The peace of mind alone is worth it I'd say. Because you know it's not going to break down on you in the middle of bloody nowhere like some of those European SUVs sometimes are.

That depends on what you’re using it for. However, if you actually go off road or need serious towing capacity then, yes. Not or probably not if you’re just cruising around the suburbs.

No way. For that kind of money, you could have bought a fully loaded Range Rover — or Mercedes GLS with way better tech and comfort. Right now, the Land Cruiser is living off its reputation.

If you're keeping it long term though, it is absolutely worth it. These things have crazy value and will run forever. Yes, while you’re not getting all the fancy tech of a BMW X7, you’re getting something that will crush down any car on the road, and will last.
