Is the Nissan Juke a future classic or a future oddity?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views9 comments
Speculation about the long term place in automotive history of the Nissan Juke's distinctive and polarizing design. Others say its bold styling and unique character will ultimately become the stuff of cult classics as it gets similarly divisive and then beloved like other unconventional vehicles. Some say the Juke's design is too extreme and its quality not high enough to endure, that it will be a quirky footnote in automotive design history if it's remembered at all. It's all part of a bigger debate about what, exactly, makes a car a 'classic', the importance of individualistic design to a car's legacy, and how shifting tastes and trends in automotive history might eventually reclassify the Nissan Juke as something else. It also makes for some interesting points on whether mass market vehicles can achieve classic status in the same way exclusive or performance models can.

Future classic, because it’s a car that represents a certain moment in car design, when companies were experimenting with anything to get some attention. It’s less a desirable classic and more a cultural artifact.

Whether it becomes a classic is a question of how influential its design will be. It could be seen as the pioneer of a trend of quirky crossovers.

The regular Juke? Well, the Nismo versions might become classics. Nah. The way it looks is too polarizing, and it’s not special enough performance wise.

I can totally see the Juke becoming an ironic favorite in a couple of decades. I can picture one being restored in 2045 and seeing it at a car show would be head turning.

The PT Cruiser might become a classic of a sort: Remembered, but not necessarily remembered fondly or with any value.

A true classic the Juke isn’t, it’s too mass market. Most classics have a special something about them, whether that’s amazing performance, luxury, or groundbreaking tech. The Juke is just... odd.

I think it's going to be a bit of both. For car buffs it will be that weird Nissan experiment that never really took off, but it won’t be a vintage Mustang or any such thing.

Forgotten oddity for sure. Strange enough to be forgotten, but not interesting enough to be a classic. People will see one in a few years and go 'Oh yeah, those existed'.

Future classic, no doubt. So weird it's got to be a cult classic in 20 years, like the AMC Gremlin or Pontiac Aztek.
