Is the new Swift's 3 cylinder engine a step backward or forward?

As we know, the 2024 Maruti Swift has switched from a 4 cylinder to a 3 cylinder engine which has caused a great deal of debate among car enthusiasts. Yet, there are some who claim it’s a downgraded product — with arguments against refinement, vibrations and driving experience in general. There are those that argue it’s an upgrade, citing better fuel efficiency and perhaps better low end torque. The debate usually rages on to how the new Swift's engine stands against other 3 cylinder engines available in the market, be it from Tata or Hyundai. The change has also prompted questions on Maruti's hatchback segment strategy and how it will impact the Swift that has been the go to car for Indian consumers for its reliability and performance.

It's a smart move by Maruti. The Swift is future proofed for upcoming emission norms without making it expensive. That's an upgrade in my eyes.

I'm holding judgement until I see the long term reliability reports. If this is as bulletproof as the old engine, then I'm happy.

Come on, 90% of Swift buyers will never realize the difference. If it's reliable and gives good mileage, people will buy it.

I think it's a downgrade in terms of enthusiast appeal, but an upgrade in terms of efficiency. I'm worried that change might affect the Swift's peppy nature, which was always known.

It’s not an upgrade, it’s not a downgrade; it’s just a different approach. Maruti do know what they are doing. If they went for a 3 cylinder, it must be good enough for their standards.

You’re still stuck in the past, you guys. These are very refined modern 3 cylinder engines. Did you ever test drive the new Swift? Some 4 cylinder cars I have driven, it’s smoother.

It's definitely a downgrade. The fewer cylinders, the more vibration and the rougher idle. I don’t care about the marginal fuel efficiency gains, I want my car to feel smooth.
