Is the new floorboard mounted battery on the Bajaj Chetak 3501 a game changer or just a gimmick?
The new Chetak 3501 from Bajaj has caused some interesting discussions among electric scooter enthusiasts over Bajaj's decision to move the battery pack from under the seat to the floorboard. The design change that has resulted in dramatically increased under seat storage space, up to an impressive 35 liters. It also throws up questions about weight distribution, handling and ride quality. It's a clever use of space according to some, but others worry about the effect of the change on the scooter's center of gravity. But there's also debate over whether this change makes the scooter less stable in wet conditions or when you're taking a sharp turn. Some riders are also worried about the battery being exposed to road debris and splashes of water. This is a hot topic in the EV community as people argue the pros and cons of this unconventional design choice.

I’m a fan as someone who rides in a hilly area. It is easier to handle on steep inclines because it has a lower center of gravity. In certain terrains, it’s a small change that makes a big difference.

I'll give them credit for being innovative. However, I am worried about long term endurance. How will the battery degrade faster being exposed to more vibrations and potential impacts? Only time will tell.

I love it! It feels more balanced, weight distribution wise. It’s a conventional scooter but with the advantages of an EV. Plus, no more hot seat summer with a hot battery under it!

I think it's brilliant as an engineer. A lower center of gravity should help stability. The battery may also be better exposed to more airflow, for better thermal management. It's a bold move that might become the new standard for e scooter design.

I have to say I'm not really sure about this one. The handling is a bit different, but the increased storage is great. It’s a little bit of a learning curve, especially in tight turns. I don’t know if it’s better or worse, it’s just different.

Gimmick alert! More storage is nice, but at what cost? The battery will take a beating from road debris, and I'm worried about that. What if you go through a deep puddle? It seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

It’s a definitely a game changer! As a daily commuter, it is a godsend to have extra storage space. Finally I can fit a helmet and a small bag of groceries under the seat. It also feels more stable at higher speeds, plus.
