Is the KTM Duke 490 project dead, or has it gotten delayed?

For years now, there has been a lot of buzz around KTM's rumored 490 platform. The idea was to fill the gap between the 390 and 790 models, giving a twin-cylinder option for those who want more power than the 390 but are not quite ready for the 790. Recent reports, though, suggest KTM may have scrapped the project altogether. There are some who say that it's because of partnership issues with Bajaj, while others say KTM is instead focusing on a 700cc platform with CF Moto. The motorcycle community seems to be split on whether this is a good idea or a missed opportunity. So, what’s really going on with the Duke 490, and what does this mean for KTM’s lineup strategy?

KTM couldn’t figure out how to make the 490 reliable enough for mass production, let’s be real. It's for the best.

Maybe they are rebranding it as a 590 or some such. KTM is very good at keeping us guessing.

I'm disappointed. The 490 could have been KTM's answer to the Honda CB500 series, which is absolutely killing it in the middleweight market.

Anyway, the 700cc platform with CF Moto sounds more interesting. It’ll be more competitive versus the MT-07 and Z650.

Good riddance. Clearly KTM needs to sort out their reliability issues before they introduce new models. It would have just been another headache for owners of the 490.

I bet they are just postponing it because of supply chain issues. Once things stabilize, you will see the 490 hit the market.

If it is really canceled, then it's a shame. For those of us that feel the 390 is a bit lacking but don't want to jump straight to the 790, a 490 twin would have been perfect.

The 490 project was a loser from the get-go. Rather, KTM should be concentrating on refining their current models rather than stuffing yet another engine size into their lineup.

Nah, it's not dead. This is where KTM's just waiting for the right moment. We'll be surprised when we least expect it with a 490 announcement.

I think KTM figured out that the 490 would eat into sales of both the 390 and 790. Axe it—it is a smart business.
