Is the Fronx’s higher ground clearance actually useful or is it there for show?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views9 comments
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx has a ground clearance of 190mm, more than what hatchbacks and even some compact SUVs get. The ride height is increased in this, and is often pointed out as a key selling point especially in Indian road conditions. But the debate continues as to whether that extra clearance actually offers any tangible benefit in real world use or is simply a marketing feature to give the car a more SUV appearance. They say the higher ground clearance makes it easier to drive over rough roads, speed bumps and waterlogged streets. Skepticism is that the difference is negligible for everyday driving, and that it can come at the expense of handling dynamics. This conversation often continues into how the taller car affects the car's center of gravity, how it handles high speed maneuvers and if it really does make the car more versatile on different roads. The reason this topic draws so much heat is that it can easily spill over to discuss how applicable crossovers are over ground breaking hatchbacks in Indian driving conditions.

I think they could've gotten the same effect with better suspension tuning without raising the body.

The ground clearance is nice, but they should have fixed the approach and departure angles too. That would be really versatile.

I think it's a good middle ground. It’s not a full SUV, but you get the benefits of higher clearance. It's a perfect car for Indian roads.

It’s useful, but don’t tell me the Fronx is an off roader, please. It remains a city car at heart, just a little more versatile.

I’ve owned both low riding cars and the Fronx, and I can tell the difference. It's not just marketing hype.

It is nice to have that extra clearance, but it does affect the handling a little. In tight corners there is a higher centre of gravity.

During monsoons I find it helpful. When driving through waterlogged streets, it gives me more confidence.

Honestly, it’s mostly for show. The Fronx is not different enough from a regular hatch to have any real impact on day to day driving.

Absolutely useful! I’ve driven over some nasty speed bumps and rough patches that would have scraped a regular hatchback. Indian conditions are a real advantage.
