Is the Exter a better bet than more established rivals, such as the Tata Punch?
In the Indian compact SUV space, there are many well established players. Particularly the Tata Punch has been a strong seller and has a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. As a newer entrant, the Hyundai Exter is trying to find its own place in this crowded market. For this reason much is said and written, discussing whether the Exter can deliver enough distinctive features or advantages to be worthy its own existence rather than rely on sturdier and better known options. Things like Hyundai’s reputation for reliability and post sales service are pitted against Tata’s perceived better safety and more rugged image. But discussions usually involve feature lists, driving dynamics, and the long term ownership experience.

Also, the Punch has been around a lot longer, so there’s more real world data on it’s reliability. I would wait a bit to see how the Exter holds up.

They are both good cars, but the Exter feels more modern and car like. That's largely dependent on whether you want a mini-SUV feel or something a little more traditional.

For the sunroof option, I’d go for the Exter. At this price point it's a premium feature.

Driving the Punch feels more solid, more SUV like. In comparison, the Exter is more like a tall hatchback.

Tata’s service network is worse than Hyundai’s. Even if that were the only reason, the Exter is worth considering for hassle free ownership.

It is hard to ignore Tata's 5 star safety rating. In accident, I would feel more confident in a Punch.

At the price point, the Exter scores because it has better interiors and more features. It’s a better daily driver if you’re not off roading.
