Is the BYD Seagull good enough for daily driving?
by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
The BYD Seagull has been praised for being inexpensive but discussions also continue as to whether its performance is adequate enough for everyday use. Some aren't exactly convinced how it’ll act in varying driving situations, and are worried about the Seagull’s modest power output and its favoring of efficiency over speed. Questions we are able to ask include its acceleration, highway performance, and how well it handles hills, or how many passengers it can carry. But proponents counter that the Seagull's performance is perfectly good enough for city driving and most drivers don't need high performance cars to get to work anyway. But this debate also raises broader questions of what the expectations for EVs are — and whether high performance inevitably means putting the dream of electric mobility for everyone on hold.

It's all about perspective. The Seagull is coming from a small ICE car, so it will be quick and responsive. That’s only slow compared to higher end EVs.

It’s nothing special, but I wish they offered a higher powered version for those who wanted a bit more oomph.

I think it's underpowered. EVs should not be worse than ICE cars, they should be better. That's a step backward, in that sense.

People have to get their expectations right. This is not a Tesla, it's an affordable city car. The performance is fine for what is would have been used for.

It may have trouble on highways or with a full load. At higher speeds I would be worried about merging or overtaking.

I have test driven one, and it seemed peppy enough for daily use. Electric motor's instant torque helps a lot in traffic.

For the city driving, it's more than enough. But you don’t need to win drag races on your commute.
