Is the Alcazar's 1.5L turbo petrol engine underpowered for a 7 seater?

Hyundai Alcazar comes with a 1.5 liter turbo petrol engine, which is smaller in displacement than some of its rivals in the 7 seater SUV segment. This has sparked conversation on whether or not this engine produces enough power and torque for a vehicle with a size like this (especially on a loaded vehicle with passengers and luggage). The turbocharging, they say, makes up for the smaller displacement, but the engine is still adequate, while others think a bigger naturally aspirated engine would be a better fit for this type of vehicle. It also delves into the performance, fuel efficiency and emissions tradeoffs in today's SUVs and whether downsized turbocharged engines are the way to go in large vehicles.

It’s not just the power, it’s the tuning. The DCT gearbox isn't too kind with the turbo engine, and there's a bit of lag and jerky shifting. Probably a larger NA engine would drive smoother in regular day to day driving.

I can say as an Alcazar owner that the engine is fine for 90% of driving situations. But if you’re loaded down on the highways, you might wish for more power. After all, how often do you actually do that?

It's all about expectations. If you come from a smaller car, you will find the Alcazar very powerful. If you’re accustomed to larger SUVs, or you regularly need to haul heavy loads, you may feel shortchanged. It is a compromise between having power and being efficient.

Underpowered is an understatement. Go uphill with a full load and you'll be wishing for more horses. Hyundai should have kept the 2.0L engine from the previous model. This is getting ridiculous: Downsizing trend.

The 1.5L turbo feels plenty powerful and I’ve test driven the Alcazar. It has good torque at low end, which is what you need in city driving. It’s not a speed demon, sure, but for a family SUV it’s more than enough.
