How modifiable will the KTM RC 490 be for track use?

As a potential platform for modifications, the KTM RC 490 has peaked the interest of track day enthusiasts and amateur racers in particular. The talk is about how easy the bike can be converted for serious track use—suspension upgrades, engine tuning, and aftermarket parts availability. That's what some riders are excited about, the possibility of a lightweight, powerful machine that could be a formidable track weapon with the right mods. Some are nervous about possible frame rigidity or electronic systems issues that could restrict more extensive changes. And there is debate about whether KTM will provide factory racing kits or whether there will be a place for third-party manufacturers to fill the void.

Mod it too much and you'll have to watch out for warranty issues. That's how strict KTM can be about that stuff.

Hopefully, they will make the subframe easily removable for track use. Streetbikes are always a pain with that.

It’ll be modifiable, but not to the extent of the 390. If you have a bigger bike, usually there are more restrictions.

The real question is whether KTM will offer a factory race kit (like they do for some other models).

You’d probably be able to turn it into a mini Moto2 bike with the right mods. I can't wait to see what people do with it.

The one thing I am worried about is the electronics. The problem is, if they're too integrated, it might limit tuning options.

Most likely, out of the box, the stock bike will be ready to go on the track. The suspension is usually nailed by KTM.

It's gonna be a tuner’s dream either way if it's anything like other KTMs. This will be expected to have tons of aftermarket support.
