Does the XUV700's thirstiness justify its performance?

The diesel variant of the XUV700 is famous for its strong performance. Fuel efficiency is hurt, however, especially in city driving. Fuel consumption figures have been widely reported by owners, with some getting decent efficiency on the highways and struggling to get good mileage in urban traffic. The performance capabilities of the car have led to some debate over whether they justify the consumption of the car's fuel, and the rising price of fuel has certainly fuelled the fire on this issue. There are those that believe the power and torque make up for the extra fuel cost, and those that think the engine's thirsty nature renders it impractical for daily use. Driving habits, engine tuning, and whether Mahindra could have more sensibly balanced performance with efficiency are often among the things discussed.

Go for the diesel version. On highways, you get the best of both worlds: great performance, and reasonable fuel efficiency.

With careful driving, I've found you can actually get decent mileage. If you're heavy on the throttle, though, you're going to be eye watering fuel bills.

It's all about perspective. A powerful SUV is not what you should be looking at if you want a fuel sipper. I think the XUV700 does a decent job for what it is.

I should have got the petrol version. City traffic mileage is atrocious and I'm spending a fortune on fuel. It's good performance, but not worth the running costs.

It’s totally worth it. Yeah, it drinks fuel like it’s going out of style, but the way it pulls is just amazing. Every time I floor it, I smile.
