Does the TUV300's design make sense or is it trying too hard to be unique?

Since the launch of Mahindra TUV300, its design has been a bone of contention. Its boxy, upright stance and somewhat quirky styling cues have not gone down well with everyone, and divide car enthusiasts and potential buyers. Some like its effort to be different in a market full of competitors, others think it is just awkward and dated. The TUV300 is suggestive of a design philosophy that favours rugged, utilitarian over stylish design, which is also in synch with the tough, go any where approach that is the vehicle’s positioning. But this has resulted in debate as to whether the design sacrifices aerodynamics, interior space efficiency, and overall 'sexiness'. The unique design is loved by some, who find it to be character, while others think it is an acquired taste that may have constrained the market appeal. The conversation often goes on to talk about how the design impacts practical things like visibility, ingress/egress, and even resale value.

Mahindra, I thought, missed the mark. Tough and utilitarian were the goal, but what they landed on is something that looks dated right out of the gate. It’s trying too hard to be different.

It's a polarizing design, but that's the idea. It's geared towards people who want a rugged, no nonsense vehicle. It’s not a sleek city SUV trying to be.

You definitely have to learn to like it. That's not necessarily bad, though. It’s something that attracts buyers who want something different. Not all of us want our car to look like every other car on the road.

I'd say it's a bit of both. Its unique design will help it stand out, and that is good for brand recognition. Some elements — like the teeny rear windows — look like a case of style over substance.

It's actually a pretty practical design. It’s boxy, which maximizes interior space, and has high seating position, which offers good visibility. It's not built to win beauty contests, it's built for purpose.

Nah, it's just ugly. Mahindra tried too hard to make it look tough, and what we’re left with is a refrigerator on wheels. When function over form goes wrong.

I believe it's refreshingly different. The TUV300's boxy design stands out in sea of curvy crossovers. It has that old school SUV charm that you don't find anymore.
