Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
Mahindra Thar has always been a rugged hands on driving experience. Part of its charm was the manual transmission, which gave the driver an increased sense of connection with the vehicle, and the terrain. The introduction of the automatic transmission in the 4x2 LX variant has sparked a debate on whether the basic character of Thar driving experience has changed. The automatic makes the Thar more accessible and comfortable for daily driving, they say, especially in city traffic. Some say it strips away a key piece of control and engagement that Thar enthusiasts have become accustomed to. This question questions the yin-yang balance of modernizing the Thar without diluting the traditional value attached to it, while also encroaching upon the judgment of an automatic transmission – whether it takes the overall Thar experience to a next level or backtracks it.

At first, I was skeptical but the auto actually makes the Thar feel more premium without losing its character. The Thar has grown up a bit.

It very much does take away from the 'raw' experience, but the new dimension of smoothness that the auto allows is pretty addictive once you've embraced it.

Now it's a different kind of raw. Rather than fighting the gearbox you can enjoy the suspension work and how it deals with bumps.

I've driven both and I'd say the auto makes it easier to focus on the terrain when off road. You don't spend your life thinking about moving.

I suppose it's a fair trade off. It’s a bit of a loss of that old school charm, but you gain so much in terms of daily usability. Plus, the auto is pretty responsive when you need to be.

Sure, it definitely pulls some of the raw feeling off it. Manhandling a stick shift through rough terrain is half the fun of a Thar. It's just too civilized for the auto.

The auto tranny honestly makes it way more fun in city traffic. When I'm stuck in a jam I don't miss rowing gears. The weekends are still plenty fun.
