Does the larger 7 seater WagonR make economic sense compared to larger MPVs?

The 7 seater WagonR has stirred up the question of its economic viability as compared to more traditional MPVs. From one angle, the WagonR has a lower initial price to purchase and may very well be more fuel efficient because it is smaller on the outside and lighter on the inside. As a result, it may be an appealing option for budget minded families or for those that only really need the extra seating from time to time. But critics say that the compromises in space and comfort may not be worth the savings, especially in comparison with slightly larger vehicles such as the Ertiga. The question of long term value also crops up – is the 7 seater WagonR going to retain its resale value as well as established MPVs? Also, they say that for a small car that you are loading to capacity all the time, the running costs, such as maintenance and possible repairs, may be higher. Also part of the economic debate are the insurance costs, road tax and parking fees that will differ between the WagonR and larger MPVs.

People are missing the point, I think. This isn't about taking away from full size MPV; it is about adding versatility to the small car segment. It's the difference for many between a 7 seater or not. That's valuable.

I've done the numbers, and the 7 seater WagonR can be more economical, just so long as you're smart about it. The savings at the beginning are nice, but you also have to consider things like the wear and tear from having a full load all of the time.

It depends on your use case. If you need seven seats a day, a bigger car is the way to go. However, the WagonR seems to make sense for occasional use. It's cheaper to run, easier to park, and you still have that extra capacity when you need it.

I don't see the point. What are you saving? A couple of lakhs? You are compromising on space and comfort. In the long run, it's better to stretch your budget to a proper MPV. The WagonR is a half measure.

It's been a game changer for my family. The WagonR, a 7 seater, gives us that flexibility when we need it, we couldn’t afford an Ertiga. Also, it's a lot more fuel efficient than other larger MPVs. It’s all about being smart about compromises.
