Do recent models of the Nissan Patrol have lost the edge they always had with off road?

by Ashutoshover 1 year ago0 views7 comments
As a capable off road vehicle, the Nissan Patrol has long been known for its abilities to conquer the most difficult of desert and rocky country. But recently, advanced models have added more luxury features, more electronic systems and have become bigger. As a result, there have been arguments among off road enthusiasts about whether the Patrol can still cut the mustard in tough conditions like it used to. There are those who say newer models are too heavy and complex for serious off roading, while others claim that modern technology actually allows the Patrol to perform better. It’s a common discussion between comparing the older models, such as the Y61, to the newer generations, and how the Patrol compares to the competition in real off road situations.

I think people forget the average Patrol owner isn’t doing extreme off roading. The new models are more than capable for the kind of off road use most people do - beach driving, light trails, etc.

It isn't capability that's the problem, it's repairability. The old Patrols were easy enough to fix in the middle of nowhere. Good luck with that when there are electronics in the new ones.

For those of you who are off road aficionados and regularly take your Y62 off road, I can assure you it is still an incredibly capable vehicle. Both advanced 4WD system and air suspension make a huge difference. Sure, it’s fancy, but it can get dirty with the best of them.

Off road, the Patrol is still great but it’s not the same as it was. It’s not a purpose built offroader, it’s more of a luxury SUV that can do the odd bit of offroading.

I think it's a trade-off. Sure, the new models aren’t as raw and rugged as their predecessors, but they’re far more comfortable for long trips and are still very capable when the going gets tough.

It has definitely lost some of its edge. They are too heavy and too complicated for the new ones. For real off roading give me a manual Y61 with a snorkel any day.

The new Patrols are still beasts off road, no way. The tech does actually help, things like the terrain select modes make it easier for average drivers to take on tough conditions.
