Could the Kia Ceed GT make for a worthy successor to the Golf GTI or Focus ST?

What makes the hot hatch segment so fiercely competitive today is that established players such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST dominate the conversation. But the Kia Ceed GT is not as powerful, and sets out to be a sportier version of the standard Ceed. However, does it have the power to go head to head with the big names in the category? Others say it's not as fast or as good as its rivals, but it provides a more accessible and cheaper way in for sporty hatchbacks. Many say it’s not exciting enough in terms of driving dynamics. The other question is one of brand perception: can Kia shake off its 'budget' image and be taken seriously in the performance car market?

But the Ceed GT is more of a Hyundai i30 N Line competitor. It's not a full blown hot hatch trying to be.

If you want something sporty but can't stomach Kia reliability, it's a solid choice.

I test drove both and chose the Golf GTI. The Ceed GT just didn’t feel special enough.

The Ceed GT is underrated. It's slower, but it’s more than adequate for public roads and much cheaper to operate.

If you want something sporty but don’t need the full on hot hatch experience, it’s a great alternative.

In fact, I actually prefer my Ceed GT to my friend's Focus ST. It is quick enough and much more comfortable to use on a daily basis.

But the Ceed GT is not in the same league as a Golf GTI. It's a warm hatch, rather than a hot one.
