General information and overview

The 2017 Tata Winger is a diesel‑powered, manual-transmission maxi‑van offered in multiple seating layouts (including 9‑seater and extended 15‑seater configurations) and roof heights, built around a long 2780mm wheelbase and designed for commercial passenger duties and shuttle applications. It uses a turbocharged diesel (2.0–2.2 litre family depending on specific variant) tuned for low‑end torque to ease city driving with passengers, and suspension setup (MacPherson up front, parabolic leaf springs at rear on longer versions) that favours load‑carrying stability and ride comfort over sporty handling. Interior highlights for passenger variants include abundant headroom in hi‑roof models, multiple AC vents and practical, service-friendly packaging that operators appreciate for uptime and maintenance access. Safety and comfort equipment is basic but targeted — seat belts, side impact beams and available AC — while Tata’s wide service network supports lower lifecycle costs compared with niche rivals.

The Tata Winger 2017 is a versatile diesel maxi van tailored for India's demanding roads, powered by a 1948cc engine delivering strong low-end torque for easy urban maneuvering and loaded highway runs up to 120km/hr, paired with short gear ratios despite a slightly rubbery shifter. It boasts spacious cabins for 9-15 passengers, premium AC with eight vents and dual blowers prioritizing rears, comfortable seating with grab handles, and practical touches like a multi-info display for fuel, oil temp, and odometer. Ride quality excels via advanced suspension handling potholes, 2780mm wheelbase for stability, and 165mm ground clearance, though cornering shows body roll. Safety includes all-seat belts, side beams, fog lamps in higher trims, and child locks. With 10-12kmpl efficiency, vast service reach, and prices from Rs 7-7.56 lakh ex-showroom, it's purpose-built for tours, staff shuttles, or families, offering unmatched space, comfort, and economy that make it a top pick for reliable, low-cost mobility.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the 2017 Tata Winger to be a practical, no-nonsense people-mover that prioritises space, simplicity and running-cost value over luxury or sporty dynamics. The turbo-diesel engine is tractable at low rpm and carries full loads with minimal fuss, making it well suited to intercity shuttles, staff transport and tourism duties. Ride quality and long wheelbase stability are positives for passenger comfort on highways, though the relatively narrow tyres and body roll under hard cornering remind me this is a van built for cargo and occupants rather than agility. Interior packaging — generous headroom in the high‑roof variants, multiple AC vents and easy serviceability — reinforces its appeal for commercial operators. Overall, I consider the Winger a sensible buy if your priorities are durability, interior space and low operating costs rather than premium fit-and-finish or dynamic refinement.
December 20, 2025
I find the Tata Winger 2017 to be a standout maxi van in India, delivering exceptional value through its powerful 1948cc diesel engine that responds impressively at low RPMs, making city driving effortless even with full load and AC on, while comfortably cruising at 120km/hr on highways with low NVH levels. Its spacious interiors accommodate up to 9-15 passengers comfortably, enhanced by eight AC vents, five blowers for rear seats, and large windows for great ventilation, ideal for tour operators, corporate staff transport, or family outings. The long 2780mm wheelbase and 165mm ground clearance ensure stable high-speed travel and pothole absorption, though body roll is noticeable in corners due to small tyres. Safety features like seat belts on all seats, side impact beams, headlamp levelling, high-mounted stop lamps, and rear door child locks add reassurance. With vast Tata service network support, premium features differentiating it from basic vans, and no real competition in economical power, I recommend it wholeheartedly for buyers seeking reliable, comfortable people-carrying without breaking the bank—it's a smart, future-proof choice that excels in versatility and cost-effectiveness.

Price

Pricing details and changes

Ex-showroom pricing for the Winger (2017-era diesel manual variants) was in the neighbourhood of Rs. 7.00–7.56 lakh depending on roof and trim, with base non‑AC Deluxe versions at the lower end and AC/Luxury trims at the higher end. On-road costs in India will vary by state because of differing road tax, insurance and registration charges, but expect a typical on-road figure to be several tens of thousands higher than ex-showroom — roughly adding 8–12% in smaller states and more in high-tax states, so on-road prices commonly landed in the Rs. 7.8–8.5 lakh range in many cities when new. I consider this pricing competitive for a factory-built maxi-van offering commercial durability and a wide Tata service network, making the Winger a good value proposition against converted vans or rivals where lower initial price often means higher long‑term downtime or poorer parts availability.
December 20, 2025
In India, the Tata Winger 2017 ex-showroom prices ranged from Rs 7.00 lakh to Rs 7.56 lakh, covering variants like Deluxe Flat Roof Non-AC, Deluxe Hi Roof Non-AC, Platinum BSIII, Standard Flat Roof Non-AC, Luxury Flat Roof AC, and Platinum BSIV, with the base at Rs 7.20 lakh and top-end AC models at Rs 7.56 lakh. On-road prices, factoring in registration, insurance, road tax, and other charges varying by state (typically 10-15% extra), would push these to approximately Rs 7.8-8.5 lakh in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai—always verify locally as taxes differ, e.g., higher in Karnataka. As I evaluate it, this pricing positions the Winger as an unbeatable bargain in the passenger van segment, offering AC luxury, robust build, and high seating capacity at a fraction of competitors' costs, making it a no-brainer for fleet owners or high-mileage users where low ownership expenses outweigh minor gearshift rubberiness; its value shines brighter in bulk buys with negotiable dealer discounts and low depreciation, ensuring quick ROI for commercial applications.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The official ARAI figure recorded for the Winger diesel manual is about 10.7 kmpl while real-world city figures typically fall into the 7–9 kmpl band and highway running can approach the ARAI number with careful driving. For buyers focused on running costs, I see the Winger delivering acceptable fuel economy for a 2.0–2.2 litre diesel people‑carrier, but operators should budget fuel costs using conservative city figures (around 8 kmpl) when estimating monthly operating expense.
December 20, 2025
I note the Tata Winger 2017's ARAI-certified mileage at 10.71kmpl for its diesel manual variants, with real-world figures of 10-12kmpl overall, dropping to 7.35kmpl in heavy city traffic but holding steady on highways. For running costs in India, diesel at Rs 90/litre means Rs 7.5-9/km, making it economical for high-volume transport like tours, far better than petrol rivals, supporting a smart buy if your annual runs exceed 20,000km.

Tata Winger comes with two engine options: 1948cc Diesel and 1948cc TCIC Diesel.

Winger is a Multi-Purpose Maxi Van from Tata which aims to become the most comfortable and luxurious van in the commercial sector. In this article, we try to figure out more about this van in detail.

Exterior

Tata has tried its level best to make this van look as stylish as possible. It features a wide windscreen at it front which complements the slanted front look of Winger. The broad front grille comes with a Tata logo at its centre and a chrome bar placed just above this front grille. The square shaped clear lens headlights further enhance the look of Winger. The top variant of Winger comes with round shaped fog lights housed in its long bumper. The air-inlets also complement the look of fog lights. Move to the side of this van and you will notice three large side windows placed just above its body panels. Tata has placed decals on its side doors which looks sporty with the side footsteps. Winger features rear sliding doors with body colored door handles. The top variant also features wheel covers which add premium touch to this van although we wish if it had bigger tyres and wheel arches. This van looks extremely tall when seen from the back. The tall boot gates give it bland looks while you will also notice stylish tail lights at the back.

Interior

The van comes with plush interiors which makes it look premium. The leather wrapped two-spoke steering wheel and gear knob further enhance its visual charm. Tata has used high quality of fabrics in its seat covers. The top variant comes with bucket seats which give you optimum under thigh and back support. The stretched wheelbase ensures proper leg room for all passengers. Winger is available with different seating arrangements depending upon your preference. It comes with seating capacity of 7, 9, 12 and 13 people.

Comfort and Convenience

Apart from its comfortable bucket seats, Winger comes with power steering, dual AC with rear vents and controls, three- way adjustable driver seat, ORVMs on both side, individual arm rests and large doors for easy entry/exit.

Dashboard and Storage

Tata Winger has a modern dashboard with usage of high quality of plastics. The instrument console of Winger is also placed on this dashboard which looks quite futuristic with blue backlit. The car features circular dials for its analogue tachometer, speedometer, fuel and temperature gauge. Apart from a spacious glove box in this dashboard, it also comes with an integrated utility tray. There are many cup, bottle holders and magazine pockets in Winger. There is enough amount storage room at the back and it also features two lockable utility compartments to keep important documents.

Music System

The top variant of Winger comes with an integrated 2-DIN music system with four in-built speakers. This audio system comes with USB and AUX-in ports for direct connectivity of your musical gadgets.

Engine and Gearbox

Winger is powered by a 4-cylinder 1948cc diesel engine. This engine churns out a maximum power of 90 bhp at 4300 rpm. The torque output of this SOHC engine is of 190 Nm which ranges from 2000-3000 rpm. This engine is mated with a five speed manual gearbox which supplies power to its front wheels only.

Acceleration and Performance

The engine responses quite impressively at low rpms and that’s the biggest USP of this engine. With full load and AC, the car faces only minor turbo lag which goes away gradually. The short gear ratios allow you to properly use the power of this van. The instant half throttle responses make it easy for you to drive Winger in city traffic .The NVH levels have been kept low which makes it less disturbing on highways. It can easily reach the speed of 120km/hr. The rubbery gearbox is not that convenient though but with instant throttle reactions, you don’t have to use it frequently.

Mileage and Safety Features

The fuel efficiency of Winger ranges from 10-12km/ltr. Winger features seat belts on all seats for your safety and also comes side impact beams, headlamp levelling device, high mounted stop lamps and rear door child lock.

Suspension and Braking System

Tata Winger is equipped with McPherson Struts at its front and double parabolic leaf springs at the back. Winger features disc brakes with twin pot calliper at its front and drum brakes at the back with LSPV technology which assesses the load on the all wheels and accordingly applies the brakes.

Ride and Handling

The long wheelbase of 2780mm and ground clearance of 165mm makes sure that Winger stays stable at high speeds. The advanced suspension system also gives you comfortable journeys and digests most of the potholes easily. Winger features anti roll bar which tries to make it stable around corners but its small tyres fail to hold this van properly and there is noticeable body roll. The power steering of Winger has a minimum turning radius of 5.65m which makes a big different to ride and handling of this van. Winger can easily be handled in city traffic and feels quite confident at high speeds. The braking system also effectively stops this heavy machine whenever required.

Shades, Variants and Warranty

Winger is available in four different variants and in three different shades. It’s also available as a school, cargo van and ambulance. You can get it customized also as per you need. For minimal maintenance cost, Winger comes with a warranty of 150000 kilometres or 18 months.

Verdict

This maxi van has already become quite famous in our Indian market. It serves different purposes and gives you incredible amount of comfort and space. The premium features and easy ride ability of Winger differentiates it from regular vans and currently, there is no other van available in our Indian market which is as economical and powerful as Winger. We certainly feel it’s a complete value for money van which will become even popular in the upcoming time.
