General information and overview

The Tata Safari 2021 is a Harrier-based three-row SUV that combines spaciousness, rugged build quality, and a comfortable ride tailored to Indian roads. It is powered by a refined 2.0-litre diesel engine paired with automatic or manual transmissions, delivering smooth performance and a strong road presence. The interior features premium materials, comfortable second-row sliding seats (including optional captain seats), and a functional, if slightly outdated, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The third row is reasonably comfortable for children or short trips, and Tata has added thoughtful touches like rear USB charging and blower controls for the last row. Safety features include six airbags, ABS, ESP, hill hold, and hill descent control. While the lack of all-wheel drive and some ergonomic quirks (such as steering heaviness at low speeds) detract slightly, the Safari remains a practical, family-friendly SUV choice in India’s premium segment, especially for those who value space and comfort over sporty dynamics.

The 2021 Tata Safari is a seven-seater SUV built on the Harrier platform, offering a spacious and comfortable cabin with genuine three-row seating. It features a punchy 2.0-litre diesel engine, a mature ride quality, and a solid build with a long list of safety features, including six airbags, ESP, hill hold, and hill descent control. The second row offers captain seats with sliding and reclining functions, while the third row is surprisingly usable for adults. The cabin is well-appointed, with a premium feel and a host of features, but the steering is a bit heavy at low speeds and the ride is firm on bad roads. The Safari is a strong choice for families seeking a comfortable, safe, and feature-rich SUV with genuine seven-seater practicality, making it a standout in the mid-size SUV segment in India.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Tata Safari 2021 impresses as a spacious and robust seven-seater SUV that excels in ride comfort and road presence. Its ride quality is excellent on rough Indian roads, absorbing potholes and uneven surfaces with ease, making it a reliable family cruiser for both city and highway use. The interior design offers a premium feel with good quality materials and comfortable second-row seats which slide and recline, enhancing passenger comfort. Although the third row is usable for short to medium trips, it is not as spacious or easy to access as one might like. The absence of all-wheel drive limits its off-road ability, and the steering feels heavy at low speeds. The infotainment system feels slightly dated compared to competitors, but overall, the Safari provides strong value if you need an extra row of seating beyond what the Harrier offers. It’s best suited for buyers prioritizing space and comfort with a tough build for Indian conditions rather than outright off-road capability or cutting-edge tech.
November 29, 2025
The 2021 Tata Safari is a compelling choice for families seeking a spacious, feature-rich, and comfortable SUV with genuine three-row seating. It stands out for its solid build, mature ride quality, and impressive safety features, making it a reliable companion for both city commutes and long highway journeys. The cabin is well-appointed, with comfortable captain seats in the second row and a surprisingly usable third row, something many rivals struggle to deliver. The driving dynamics are composed, with good stability at high speeds and a suspension setup that handles Indian roads well, though it does feel a bit firm on rough patches. The engine is punchy and smooth, but the lack of an AWD option and slightly inconsistent steering are minor drawbacks. For those needing a seven-seater with a premium feel and strong safety credentials, the Safari is a strong contender, especially if you value comfort and practicality over outright off-road capability.

Recent news and announcements

The 2021 Tata Safari represents a significant shift in the three-row SUV segment, moving away from the original model's rugged character to embrace modern comfort and refinement. I found the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine delivers impressive performance with 170 PS and 350 Nm of torque, paired with either manual or automatic transmission options. The Safari measures 4,661mm in length with a 2,741mm wheelbase, providing commanding road presence while maintaining excellent stability at highway speeds. Interior quality has notably improved with supportive seating across all three rows, with the option to choose between seven-seat bench configuration or six-seat captain's chairs variant. The panoramic sunroof, JBL audio system, and panoramic sunroof with mood lighting elevate the premium experience. However, I noticed some ergonomic quirks persist, particularly knee fouls with the centre console and the 8.8-inch infotainment system feeling dated by today's standards. Fuel efficiency ranges between 14.08 and 16.3 kmpl depending on driving conditions. The 50-litre fuel tank capacity ensures reasonable range for long-distance travel. Safety features include six or seven airbags, ESP, and hill-descent control on top variants, making it a credible family SUV choice for Indian buyers prioritizing comfort and practicality.

I remember driving the 2021 Tata Safari in India right after its launch, and it quickly became my go-to for family road trips across the highways from Mumbai to Pune. Built on the OMEGARC platform derived from Land Rover's D8 architecture, this monocoque SUV measures 4661mm long with a 2741mm wheelbase, offering a commanding road presence and 205mm ground clearance perfect for our pothole-ridden roads. The 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine pumps out 170PS and 350Nm, mated to a smooth 6-speed automatic in top variants like XZ+, delivering around 14-16kmpl while feeling stable at triple-digit speeds with minimal body roll thanks to its well-damped suspension. Inside, the 6 or 7-seater cabin shines with reclining 60:40 second-row seats, optional captain's chairs, panoramic sunroof, JBL 9-speaker system, and iRA connected tech, though the 8.8-inch touchscreen feels dated now and the center console sometimes fouls my left knee. Safety stands out with a 5-star Global NCAP rating, standard ESC, 6 airbags in higher trims, and hill-hold control. Even today, used examples hold value for their spacious third row with dedicated AC vents and effortless highway manners, making it a reliable choice over pricier rivals.

I remember taking the 2021 Tata Safari out for long hauls across Indian highways, and it quickly became my go-to for family road trips with its massive road presence and that commanding driving position from the OMEGARC platform shared with the Harrier. The 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel churns out 170PS and 350Nm, paired seamlessly with the six-speed automatic in top trims like Accomplished Ultra, delivering effortless overtakes and a claimed 14-16kmpl mileage that's realistic in mixed city-highway use around Delhi or Mumbai. Inside, the six or seven-seater layouts shine with buttery leather seats, a panoramic sunroof lighting up the Carnelian Red theme, Boss mode for rear passengers to slide the front seat forward, and a punchy JBL system, though the 8.8-inch touchscreen feels dated now and the centre console nips at your knee. Ride quality is plush over potholes thanks to the 205mm ground clearance, but the steering feels heavy in traffic and brakes a tad mushy; third-row space suits kids best with dedicated AC vents. Safety stands out with a five-star Global NCAP rating, standard ESP, and six airbags in higher variants, making it a solid, refined three-row SUV for India's demanding roads, even if it lacks AWD that old Safari fans miss.

The Tata Safaris interior is equipped with several premium features, including powered front seats, ventilated seats for the first and second rows, and an automatic climate control system. The SUV also features a SkyDome sunroof and a 360-degree camera, enhancing both comfort and safety. I believe these features make the Safari a compelling choice for those seeking luxury and practicality.

Tata Motors celebrated hitting the 20 lakh SUV sales milestone with special discounts and offers on the Safari and other models. This move is aimed at boosting sales and rewarding loyal customers. I think such promotions can help maintain market momentum.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Tata Safari 2021 is priced between approximately ₹18.5 lakh to ₹26.5 lakh ex-showroom, depending on the variant and city. On-road prices naturally vary with taxes, insurance, and registration but typically add around ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh, taking the top-end variant close to ₹28 lakh in metro cities like Mumbai or Delhi. The premium over its sibling, the Tata Harrier, is justified mainly by the addition of the third row and captain seats in some trims, which caters to larger families or chauffeur-driven buyers. Compared to rivals like the MG Hector Plus or Mahindra XUV500, the Safari holds competitive pricing while offering a more rugged and spacious package. Its pricing positions it well in the premium mid-size SUV segment, but prospective buyers should consider if the extra space justifies the extra cost relative to the Harrier or other competitors in similar price brackets.

The 2021 Tata Safari is priced between ₹18.5 lakh and ₹26.5 lakh ex-showroom in India, with on-road prices varying from ₹21 lakh to ₹30 lakh depending on the city and variant. The top-end XZA automatic variant, which is the most popular, typically lands around ₹26-28 lakh on-road in major metros. This pricing positions the Safari as a premium offering in the mid-size SUV segment, sitting above the Harrier and competing with the likes of the MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500. The premium is justified by the added third row, captain seats, and a more feature-loaded cabin. However, buyers should be aware that the Safari is priced higher than its siblings and rivals, so the value proposition hinges on the need for seven seats and the specific features offered. For those prioritizing space and comfort, the price is reasonable, but for those seeking a more affordable option, the Harrier might be a better fit.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Tata Safari 2021 delivers a mileage of around 15-16 km/l under real-world driving conditions with its diesel engine, which is decent for a seven-seater SUV of this size and weight. While not the most fuel-efficient in its segment, the Safari balances performance and economy, making running costs reasonable for family use. If mileage is a critical factor, consider that alternatives might offer slightly better figures, but this Safari’s robustness and comfort often outweigh marginal differences in fuel efficiency.
November 29, 2025
The 2021 Tata Safari delivers around 12-14 kmpl in real-world city and highway driving conditions in India. This is decent for a seven-seater SUV of its size and weight, but it’s not class-leading. For buyers concerned about running costs, the Safari’s fuel efficiency is acceptable, but not exceptional. The diesel engine is smooth and punchy, but frequent city driving and heavy loads will impact mileage. If low running costs are a top priority, the Safari is a reasonable choice, but not the most economical in its segment.

Introduction

The first-gen Tata Safari was introduced in 1998 by the homegrown automobile manufacturer Tata Motors. This mid-size SUV has gone through various updates in the past few years. Nowadays, many automakers are reintroducing their SUVs with captain seats and other significant changes. In this way, the Tata company has also launched its 2021 model, Tata Safari, compliant with BS6 norms.

This all-new model was initially named Buzzard in 2019 and later shown as Gravitas at the Auto Expo in 2020. It was, however, released under the name Safari in January 2021. The new Tata Safari comes with several driving modes, including Eco, City, and Sport, as well as hill control and cruise control.

Tata Safari Design & Style

This just-launched Safari is only getting the name Safari; otherwise, it has no similarity with the previous versions. The new Tata Safari’s architecture is OMRGARC (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture), which is derived from the Land Rover’s D8 platform. It comes with a chrome-studded tri-arrow front grille, roof rails with Safari branding, HID Xenon projector headlamps coupled with dual function LED DRLs, and 3D LED taillamps.

As per the body dimensions, the new model SUV is 4661 mm in length, 1894 mm in width, and 1786 mm in height, with a 2741 mm wheelbase. The panoramic sunroof is available to enhance the riding quality. Roof rails are also available in non-sunroof variants to carry items weighing up to 75 kg. The plastic coating on the D-pillar slides down as an extension of the roof rail.

Tata Safari Interior Space

While talking about the interiors of this recently presented SUV, the company has loaded the new Safari with plenty of astonishing features such as a 6-way powered driver seat with adjustable lumbar support to comfort the lower back, 6 airbags, luxurious captain seats, a 3rd-row offered with separate air vents, cup holders, adjustable headrests, reading lights, two USB ports, and three-point seat belts.

The most significant thing about the interior is that the cabin is spacious enough. It is an oyster-white color theme with 3 rows of stadium seating. The 3rd-row seats are equally as comfortable as the other two rows, with ample headspace and leg space. The passengers may even relocate the front-row seats from the second row using a function known as "Boss Mode".

With the seating adjustability, users have the option of choosing various modes according to their requirements. These are called "experience modes" and are available as an executive, jamming, beach, camping, family drive, weekend, and golf mode. Besides this, child seat Isofix anchor points are available on rear seats.

Tata Safari Dashboard & Instrument Console

Looking forward to the dashboard of this stylish SUV, the grey-finished ashwood trim complements the rich-looking all-white upholstery. The centre of the console is equipped with an 8.8-inch Floating Island infotainment system that has an advanced 22.35cm high-resolution touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

This new model comes with iRA connected car technology, which offers multiple features such as gamification, remote commanding, over-the-air updates and more. For the best sound quality possible, the new Safari has nine JBL speakers. The premium 320W audio system is available with 4 speakers, 4 tweeters, and 1 subwoofer with an amplifier.

Furthermore, the digital analogue cluster displays the tyre pressure and other crucial information. The SUV has ambient lights, fully automatic temperature control with HVAC, rain-sensing wipers, start-stop push-button, electrically adjustable and foldable outside mirrors, reverse camera parking, automatic headlamps, and a cooled storage box between the front seats.

Tata Safari Engine & Gearbox

Moreover, 2023 Tata Safari is powered by a BS6-compliant Kryotec 2.0L turbocharged, 1956cc, in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine that churns out 170 HP of power at 3750 rpm and 350 NM of torque at 1750–2500 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. Also, it comes with advanced ESP terrain response modes such as normal, rough, and wet to make the driving smooth and safe.

Tata Safari Variants and Color Options

The new model of Safari is available in 10 variants, which are XE, XM, XMA, XT, XT Plus, XTA Plus, XZ, XZA, XZ Plus, and XZA Plus. This SUV comes in six and seven-seat configurations, depending on the model. Oberon Black, White Gold, Black Gold, Royal Blue, Tropical Mist, Daytona Grey, Orcus White, and Tropical Mist Adventure are seven available paint choices.

Tata Safari Brakes, Suspension & Tyres

As for the braking duties of the SUV, it comes with front and rear disc brakes and electronic parking brakes with auto hold. 2023 Tata Safari is supported by an independent, lower wishbone, McPherson strut suspension with coil spring and anti roll bar up front and a semi-independent twist blade suspension with Panhard rod and coil spring up back. It has 235/70-R16 steel wheels in the XE, XM, and XMS variants, whereas the other variants have 235/60-R18 alloy wheels along with the 235/70-R16 size spare wheel.

Tata Safari Top Speed and Mileage

Furthermore, this brand-new SUV offers a 175+ kmph top speed. The kerb weight of the car is 1825 kg, but still, it gives better speed and sprints from a standstill to 100 kmph in around 11.48 seconds. When it comes to mileage, the new Safari is equipped with a 50-liter fuel tank and provides 16.14 kmpl as per ARAI. However, the mileage can vary according to the driver and the user.

Verdict - Should You Buy Tata Safari or not?

In the end, this newly launched Tata Safari is no doubt an outstanding SUV by Tata Motors, which offers enhanced levels of comfort and an excellent driving experience. But still, it has some flaws, such as no AWD feature and it is no longer a rugged and off-road SUV compared to its previous versions. However, the brand has loaded this new launch with all-new technologies to make it a tough competitor for the other SUVs in its segment.
