Recent news and announcements

I've recently driven the updated Tata Safari petrol in India, and the standout addition is the 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine delivering 170PS and 280Nm, tuned specifically for this three-row SUV with either a slick six-speed manual or the smooth six-speed automatic gearbox. It offers refined low-end punch from just 1,000rpm, making city traffic and highway overtakes effortless, even fully loaded, though it lacks some mid-range zing compared to the diesel's 350Nm torque. The ride quality remains superb for long hauls, soaking up potholes confidently while holding line at high speeds, and the cabin now boasts a massive 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED touchscreen with Dolby Atmos JBL audio, ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, and Level 2 ADAS that's well-suited to our roads. The Red Dark edition in Accomplished Ultra trim looks menacing with red accents inside and out, available in six- or seven-seater layouts starting around Rs 17 lakh ex-showroom, but watch for occasional infotainment glitches and inconsistent fit-finish. Overall, it's a compelling petrol choice for urban families ditching diesel amid NCR bans, blending imposing presence with modern tech without major exterior changes.

I've just spent time driving the updated Tata Safari petrol in India, and this 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo GDI engine marks a refreshing shift for the big three-row SUV, now tuned to deliver 170hp and 280Nm with smooth 6-speed manual or automatic options. It punches hard from low revs with strong low-end grunt for effortless city crawls and highway overtakes, feeling refined despite some audible petrol buzz, and pairs brilliantly with the SUV's composed ride that soaks up bumps while holding steady at high speeds. The top-spec Accomplished Ultra Red Dark edition steals the show in stealth black with Carnelian Red accents inside, featuring a massive 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED touchscreen, Dolby Atmos JBL audio, ventilated seats, Level 2 ADAS, panoramic sunroof, and gesture tailgate—making it feature-loaded for family hauls. Fuel efficiency hovers around 16kmpl ARAI, ground clearance stays at 205mm for our roads, and pricing kicks off at about Rs 15.5 lakh up to Rs 30.7 lakh ex-showroom. Sure, the infotainment glitches occasionally and fit-finish isn't flawless, but this petrol Safari suits urban buyers craving performance over diesel clatter, especially with NCR diesel curbs.

I have recently spent considerable time with the new Tata Safari petrol variant and found it to be a compelling addition to India's premium SUV segment. The 1.5-litre Hyperion turbocharged engine delivers 170PS and 280Nm of torque, providing surprisingly refined performance for a petrol-powered three-row SUV, with a healthy 160Nm available from just 1000rpm that ensures strong low-end grunt for quick acceleration. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly with well-synchronized gear ratios, keeping the vehicle in the optimal power band during various driving conditions. What impresses me most is the ride quality and highway manners, which make long-distance cruising genuinely comfortable despite the vehicle's substantial size. The interior has received significant upgrades with the new 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED touchscreen, ventilated seats, and comprehensive safety features including Level 2 ADAS, making it exceptionally feature-rich for the price point. Pricing starts at Rs 13.29 lakh for the entry-level Smart trim, representing excellent value in the segment. While fuel efficiency ranges around 14-16.8 kmpl depending on driving conditions and the availability of both six and seven-seat configurations provides flexibility for different family needs.

I've just driven the new Tata Safari petrol automatic in India, and it's a game-changer for urban families craving refinement over diesel clatter. The 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine pumps out 170PS and 280Nm, delivering smooth, linear acceleration with strong low-end punch from just 1000rpm, making highway overtakes effortless even with a full six- or seven-seater load. Paired to a slick six-speed AISIN torque converter automatic, shifts are seamless, though paddles take a moment to disengage, and it's available with a manual too across variants from Smart to the loaded Accomplished Ultra Red Dark. Inside, the massive 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED touchscreen with Dolby Atmos JBL audio shines, but glitches like freezing CarPlay persist alongside inconsistent fit-finish. Ride quality is superb for long cruises, absorbing bumps confidently on 19-inch wheels, while Level 2+ ADAS with 22 functions, seven airbags, and a five-star Bharat NCAP rating bolster safety. The Red Dark edition's Carnelian Red accents elevate the blacked-out cabin, complete with ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, and air purifier. It's feature-packed and imposing at 4668mm long, but ergonomic quirks linger—no major exterior tweaks since the 2023 facelift. Perfect for NCR's diesel bans, though expect around 14kmpl.

Tata has been spotted testing the 2025 Safari with a petrol engine option, marking a significant update as the current model lacks this variant. The petrol powertrain is expected to be a 1.5L turbocharged TGDi engine producing around 170PS and 280Nm, designed to meet BS6 Phase II norms and compatible with E20 fuel. Alongside this, Tata is working on a more powerful diesel update, tuning the 2.0L engine up to 180bhp from the existing 170bhp. These updates could improve performance and offer more choices to buyers by year-end. I think adding a petrol variant will help Safari attract more urban customers who prefer petrol over diesel.

History and Evolution of Tata Safari

First Generation: 1998-2019

This seven-seater vehicle was designed with a spacious interior and a foldable third row, making it a popular choice for families. It quickly became known as a cost-effective alternative to other off-road vehicles available at the time. Over the years, the Safari underwent several updates, including a major face-lift in 2005 that introduced new design elements and improved performance.

Second Generation: 2021-Present

In 2021, Tata reintroduced the Safari, but this time as a front-wheel-drive monocoque crossover SUV. This new generation shares its platform with the Tata Harrier, showcasing a modern design and enhanced features. The second-generation Safari aims to blend style with functionality, appealing to a broader audience while maintaining the rugged charm of its predecessor.

The Tata Safari is powered by a robust 2.0-litre  KRYOTEC diesel engine, which delivers an impressive 170 HP of power and a torque of 350 Nm. This engine is designed to provide a thrilling driving experience, whether we are navigating through city traffic or cruising on the highway. The smooth acceleration and responsive handling make every journey enjoyable, allowing us to overtake with ease.

Transmission Choices

We have the option of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, both of which enhance the driving experience. The automatic variant, in particular, shifts gears seamlessly, ensuring that we can focus on the road ahead without any distractions. This flexibility in transmission options caters to different driving preferences, making the Safari suitable for various situations.

Fuel Efficiency

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Tata Safari performs reasonably well for an SUV of its size. While it may not be the most economical option on the market, it strikes a balance between power and efficiency. We can expect decent mileage, making it a practical choice for both daily commutes and long road trips.

Safety Features

In our Tata Safari, safety is a top priority. We are proud to offer features like a 360° surround view system that helps us see all around the vehicle, ensuring we are aware of our surroundings at all times. The advanced electronic stability program keeps the car stable, giving us confidence on the road.

Crash Test Ratings

The Safari has received a remarkable 5-star safety rating from GNCAP, which shows how well it protects us in case of an accident. This rating is a testament to the vehicle's strong build and safety features, making it one of the safest options available in India.

Competitors and Market Position

Key Competitors

In the competitive landscape of SUVs, the Tata Safari faces strong rivals like the MG Hector, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta. Each of these vehicles brings unique features and styles that appeal to different buyers. We believe that the Safari stands out with its robust design and spacious interior, making it a popular choice among families.

Market Position

The Tata Safari has carved a niche for itself in the Indian market, especially among those looking for a blend of luxury and practicality. Its pricing strategy positions it well against competitors, offering great value for the features provided. We see it as a strong contender in the mid-size SUV segment, appealing to both urban and rural customers.
