General information and overview

The Tata Nano GenX (2019) builds on the original Nano’s concept of a tiny, ultra-affordable car with refreshed styling and features designed for modern city drivers. Powered by a 624cc petrol engine producing 37 bhp, the GenX offers manual and AMT gearbox options to suit driver preferences. Key improvements include better shock absorbers and a more effective air conditioning system for enhanced comfort. Despite its small footprint, the cabin maximizes interior space, comfortably seating up to five occupants, with better legroom and headroom than many entry-level hatchbacks. The Nano GenX excels in urban maneuverability due to its compact size, light steering, and simple controls. Although it lacks advanced safety features such as airbags or ABS, it delivers basic transport with minimal fuss. The car’s design and build focus on practicality, economy, and ease of use rather than luxury or power. This makes it ideal for first-time car buyers, small families, or users seeking a no-frills affordable vehicle for city driving and short commutes.

The Tata Nano GenX (2019) is a compact, five-seater hatchback designed for Indian city life. It features a 624 cc petrol engine, available with both manual and automatic (AMT) transmissions, and delivers a balance of space, comfort, and practicality. The improved suspension and effective AC system enhance daily usability, and the openable tailgate adds to practicality. Safety features are minimal, with no airbags or ABS, but the low price and low running costs make it a compelling option for budget buyers. Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Tata Nano GenX (2019) stands out as a practical and economical city car tailored for budget-conscious buyers in India. Its compact size and light steering make it extremely easy to maneuver and park in congested urban environments. While the 624cc engine delivers modest 37 bhp power, it suffices for city driving but feels underpowered on highways, especially beyond 90 km/h where stability drops due to its lightweight. The AMT option adds convenience in stop-and-go traffic, enhancing driver comfort. Comfort is decent for short trips with improved shock absorbers and a surprisingly effective AC system given the price point. The interiors are simple but functional, offering more space than many rivals in its segment. Safety features are minimal, reflecting the ultra-affordable nature of the vehicle. Overall, the Nano GenX is suited for small families or daily commuters valuing low cost and easy urban usability rather than outright performance or premium features. It is a no-frills “people’s car” that delivers excellent value for money without major compromises on practicality.

The Tata Nano GenX (2019) stands out as a practical city car for Indian buyers who prioritise affordability and compact dimensions. Its small footprint makes it easy to manoeuvre through congested urban roads and tight parking spots, while the spacious cabin offers surprising comfort for a five-seater. The automatic transmission adds convenience, especially in stop-and-go traffic, and the improved shock absorbers make city rides smoother than earlier Nano models. However, the car feels unstable at speeds above 90 km/h, which limits its highway usability. The build quality is basic, with hard plastics and minimal safety features, but for the price, it delivers solid value for money. The AC and sound system are effective, and the overall experience is best suited for daily commuting rather than long-distance travel. If you need a no-frills, budget-friendly car for city use, the Nano GenX is a sensible choice.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

By the end of 2019, Tata Motors had officially stopped producing the Tata Nano, with zero production and sales recorded in the last few months of the year. This marked the end of an era for a car that was once hailed as a revolutionary affordable vehicle.
December 31, 2019
By October 2019, it was clear that the Tata Nano would not meet the updated crash test norms or the BS-VI emission norms, further solidifying its discontinuation. The company had no plans to invest in upgrading the model to meet these stringent regulations.
October 2, 2019
In 2019, Tata Motors admitted that the Nano, in its current form, would not comply with the new safety regulations and emission norms. This admission came as the company struggled to justify continued production of a model that was no longer viable.
April 1, 2019
By January 2019, Tata Motors had decided to discontinue the Tata Nano due to the inability to meet new safety norms, including the mandatory installation of Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) from April 1, 2019. The company found it financially unviable to upgrade the Nano to comply with these regulations.
January 31, 2019
In the final months of 2018, sales of the Tata Nano hit an all-time low, with only three units sold in June and a total of 310 units sold between July and December. This poor sales performance further solidified the decision to discontinue the model. I think the lack of significant updates and the negative publicity early in its life really hurt the Nanos chances.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Tata Nano GenX (2019) is priced attractively, with ex-showroom rates starting around ₹2.36 lakh and going up to approximately ₹3.35 lakh depending on variant and city. The AMT variants, given their convenience feature, are positioned near the higher side of this range, typically around ₹3.24 lakh to ₹3.43 lakh ex-showroom. On-road prices, which include taxes, insurance, and registration, can push the cost to about ₹4.00 lakh in metro locations like New Delhi. This pricing makes the Nano GenX one of the most affordable cars on offer in the Indian market, retaining Tata’s original ethos of providing an ultra-budget personal vehicle. From a value perspective, this low price helps offset the limited features and modest performance, attracting buyers focused on a second car or a straightforward city commuter. However, prospective buyers should factor in that the Nano’s appeal is strongly price-dependent due to its basic safety and equipment levels.

The Tata Nano GenX (2019) was available in India with an ex-showroom price ranging from ₹2.36 lakh to ₹3.35 lakh, depending on the variant and transmission. The on-road price in major cities like Delhi typically went up to around ₹4.05 lakh, factoring in registration, insurance, and other local charges. This pricing made it one of the most affordable cars in the Indian market, significantly undercutting rivals like the Maruti Alto 800. The low price point is a major draw, but buyers should be aware that the cost advantage comes with compromises in features, safety, and overall refinement. The car’s low maintenance and running costs further enhance its appeal for budget-conscious buyers. However, the limited resale value and discontinuation of the model mean that buying new is no longer an option, and used units should be inspected carefully for condition and service history.

For anyone prioritizing mileage and low operating expenditure, the Nano GenX is a compelling choice.

The Tata Nano GenX (2019) offers impressive mileage, with the manual variant delivering up to 23.6 kmpl and the automatic (AMT) version around 21.9 kmpl as per ARAI figures. In real-world city driving, expect slightly lower figures, but it remains one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment. Tata has been busy in the quest of making an ultra-affordable car and this time, with the increase in demand for the AMT's, the cheapest car would turn into an automatic version of the Nano. Tata seems to be an expert now in making affordable vehicles and with its Nano scoring 1 mark more than the previous version in each update. This time, the update has not just gone cosmetic; it’s more onto the comfort of the driver and the passengers.

Tata has been busy in the quest of making an ultra-affordable car and this time, with the increase in demand for the AMT's, the cheapest car has turned into an automatic version of the Nano. Tata seems to be an expert now in making affordable vehicles and with its Nano scoring 1 mark more than the previous version in each update. This time, the update has not just gone cosmetic; it’s more onto the comfort of the driver and the passengers.

The GenX Nano has been built on the same platform, as the Nano Twist was made. With the introduction of power steering last time, the ever growing project has moved to a new phase. Increased urban traffic had made it uneasy for many to ride in the city, which made the automatic gearbox equipped vehicles so popular among the society.

No doubt, it was counted as a luxury one time, but with each passing day, every luxury will be a need one day. Tata understood the truth of the changing society and entered the right place at the right time. This is the last move of Tata motors to make its Nano work. Otherwise, the cute little piece of automobile world would not take much time to be a part of history. Well these were some talks of the past with the future, and now we move to some tech specs for the newly arrived.

Engine & Performance

The GenX Nano gets the same 624cc, 2-Cylinder engine, producing 37.5 BHP @ 5500 rpm and a torque value of 51 NM @ 4000 rpm. The Nano's best feature till date has been implied this time in the form of the new automatic gearbox, which has made it the cheapest automatic in the world, but this time, Tata motors will keep the use of this word 'cheapest' in a limited manner only. Also the new fuel tank for the Nano has a capacity of 24 litres and the total extended range of Nano has made it suitable for long trips now.

Exterior

Styling has been equally updated, with its new face which seems to be smiling and saying that it’s my time now. The headlights are smoked a bit, with a newly designed bumper with integrated fog lamps. The rear gets the same styling as the front and the new grill suits the peppy image of our cute little Nano. The body seems to be refreshed with minor changes in nearly every part, where they were required. The grill has been named as infinity grill and presents the Nano in a totally new style.

Interior

The interior of the Nano remains nearly the same, but the gear lever for the new AMT is covered with chrome, making its presence felt. The best of all, Nano EasyShift gets a sport mode in the gearbox, which seems impossible, but is there to work. The shifts change their intervals as soon as the sports mode is pressed. The interior seems to be very simple, with the power window buttons on the center console, which seems to be an odd decision. Tata Nano AMT has the same old music system which comes with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity. Also a 4 speaker set has been installed on the new Nano for an excellent listening experience of the passengers.

Shades & Ex-showroom Price

The new Nano comes with a wide range of shades namely Pearl White, Damson Purple, Meteor Silver, Dazzle Blue, Royal Gold and the new Sangria Red option. It is available in the same XE, XM and XT trims, with the automatic versions called as XMA and XTA. It has been priced between INR 1.99-2.89 lakh.
