General information and overview

The Tata Movus (2015) was designed to succeed the Sumo Grande, targeting buyers who needed a rugged and spacious diesel MUV with flexible seating arrangements. It features a 2179cc diesel engine paired to a manual transmission, producing 118 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, which ensures adequate power delivery for city traffic and highways. The large 2550mm wheelbase contributes to a roomy cabin equipped to seat 7, 8, or even 9 passengers depending on variants, with the top LX model offering captain seats for enhanced comfort. The vehicle emphasizes practicality with high ground clearance, durable suspension suited to Indian roads, and basic but functional features like air conditioning and power steering. While its interiors are utilitarian and less feature-rich compared to more contemporary rivals, it remains a durable and value-oriented option for commercial use or large families. Its discontinuation stemmed from inability to meet newer crash safety regulations, but used units still serve well in markets prioritizing ruggedness and space.

The Tata Movus 2015 is a rugged, no-nonsense MUV designed for high passenger capacity and durability in Indian conditions. It is powered by a 2179cc diesel engine producing 118.35 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and offers seating for 7, 8 or 9 passengers across three rows. The wheelbase is long at 2550mm, ensuring a spacious cabin, and the high ground clearance helps in rural and semi-urban areas with poor roads. The suspension is tuned for load-carrying ability rather than comfort, making it suitable for fleet or commercial use. Features are basic – power steering, AC, manual transmission and minimal interior upgrades, with no airbags or ABS in the 2015 model. It was positioned as a successor to the Sumo Grande, with a refreshed dashboard and captain seats in the top variant. Today, it is only available as a used vehicle, and while spare parts and service support are still accessible, the lack of modern safety norms limits its appeal for private buyers looking for a family MPV.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Tata Movus (2015) stands out as a robust and practical MUV designed primarily for customers prioritizing utility and spaciousness over refined aesthetics or cutting-edge technology. With its rugged design and a powerful 2179cc diesel engine delivering 118 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, it offers strong performance for city and highway driving, especially for those who need multi-passenger capacity. The high ground clearance and durable suspension make it well-suited for varied Indian road conditions. However, the interiors are basic by modern standards, and features are limited compared to rivals. The manual transmission feels adequate but not very refined. The Movus appeals to buyers needing a no-nonsense, reliable seven-seater diesel vehicle with low running costs, but those seeking premium comfort, advanced features, or a modern driving experience might find it lacking. Overall, it remains a practical choice for fleet operators or large families focused on value and durability rather than luxury or style.

The Tata Movus from 2015 is a no-frills, rugged people mover built for practicality over refinement. It offers a spacious cabin with seating for 7, 8 or 9 passengers, making it ideal for fleet operators, large families or those needing high passenger capacity on a tight budget. The 2179cc diesel engine delivers 118.35 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, which is adequate for city and highway use but feels strained when fully loaded or on steep inclines. Ride quality is utilitarian, with a focus on durability rather than comfort, and the suspension copes well with bad roads. Features are basic – power steering, AC and manual transmission are standard, but there’s little in terms of modern safety or tech. Visibility from the driver’s seat is good, and the high ground clearance helps in rural or semi-urban areas. However, it lacks airbags, ABS and other safety norms now considered essential, which is a serious concern for private buyers. For someone prioritising low upfront cost and high seating over safety and comfort, the Movus can still make sense in the used market, but newer MPVs offer far better value and safety.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Despite its discontinuation, the Tata Movus still holds a place in the market for its reliability and spacious interior. However, its sales figures never matched the companys expectations, leading to its eventual phase-out. I think it was a good attempt by Tata, but it just didnt resonate with buyers.
April 18, 2015
Tata Motors had planned to clear the remaining inventory of the Movus by August 2015, after which the production would be completely halted. This decision was part of their strategy to focus on more successful models.
April 17, 2015
The top model of the Tata Movus, the LX 9 Seater, was priced at Rs. 8.05 lakh before its discontinuation. This variant offered the maximum seating capacity and was targeted at larger families and commercial users. I think the pricing was competitive given its features.
April 17, 2015
Tata Motors has announced that it will be phasing out the Tata Movus due to low sales. The company is focusing on its newer models like the Zest, Bolt, and the upcoming Kite siblings. The production of the Movus will continue only to clear the remaining inventory, expected to be completed by August. I think this move is necessary for Tata to stay competitive in the market.
April 17, 2015
The last recorded price of the Tata Movus was around Rs. 7.88 lakh, which was competitive in the MUV segment at the time. However, the vehicles overall performance in the market was not satisfactory.

Pricing details and changes

When it was available, the Tata Movus LX variants in India were priced around ₹7.88 lakh to ₹8.17 lakh ex-showroom in major cities like New Delhi. On-road prices would typically rise to about ₹9 lakh to ₹9.5 lakh depending on the state taxes, insurance, and other fees. The pricing was competitive for a diesel MUV with a 7 to 9 seating layout, undercutting many premium rivals. Furthermore, maintenance costs were reasonable with annual servicing ranging between ₹2,825 and ₹7,075, and spare parts remained accessible through Tata service centers and local markets. Considering its feature set and engine, the Movus delivered decent value for money in its segment. However, it was eventually discontinued due to evolving safety norms, which affected its availability new in the market. Used Tata Movus units can still be found at much lower prices, offering an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers needing a spacious diesel vehicle.
December 6, 2025
The Tata Movus 2015 was launched in India with an ex-showroom price range of around ₹6.77 lakh to ₹7.44 lakh, depending on the variant and seating configuration, with later listings showing prices around ₹7.88 lakh to ₹8.17 lakh ex-showroom in major cities. On-road prices at the time would have been roughly ₹8.5 lakh to ₹9.2 lakh, factoring in registration, insurance, and other local charges. Today, the Movus is discontinued and only available in the used car market, so there is no official ex-showroom or on-road price. In the second-hand market, a well-maintained 2015 Movus can be found between ₹3.5 lakh and ₹5.5 lakh, depending on condition, location, and usage. From a value perspective, the Movus makes sense only if the priority is very low acquisition cost and high seating, but the lack of safety features and dated design significantly reduce its appeal compared to modern MPVs like the Ertiga or newer Tata offerings. For a private buyer, the low price comes with compromises in safety, comfort and resale value.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Tata Movus offers an official mileage of approximately 15.16 kmpl on the diesel engine. This figure represents a balanced efficiency for an MUV of its size, making it reasonably economical to run in India’s fuel-price environment. For buyers conscious about running costs, the Movus provides a good compromise between power and fuel efficiency, especially when regularly carrying multiple passengers or cargo.
December 6, 2025
The Tata Movus 2015 returns a claimed mileage of around 15.16 kmpl on diesel, which is decent for a large, heavy-duty MUV of its size and engine capacity. In real-world Indian conditions – mixed city and highway driving with 6-9 passengers – the actual mileage typically ranges between 12 to 14 kmpl. This is acceptable for a vehicle of this segment, especially for fleet or commercial use where fuel efficiency is balanced against seating and durability. Running costs are kept in check by the availability of diesel and relatively affordable spare parts, but frequent long-distance use with heavy loads will increase fuel bills. For someone prioritising low running costs and high seating, the Movus offers a reasonable balance, but newer MPVs deliver better mileage and lower overall running costs when safety and comfort are also considered.
