General information and overview

The Tata Indigo eCS 2018 is a compact sedan tailored for Indian realities, seating five comfortably with generous legroom, headroom, and a huge boot for luggage or commercial loads. Powered by a refined 1.4-litre CR4 diesel (90 bhp), it offers peppy acceleration, stable high-speed cruising, and decent bad-road prowess thanks to good ground clearance and compliant suspension. Interiors are functional with power windows, AC, and reading lamps, though plastics feel basic and safety lacks airbags. Available in colours like Spanish Tan or Jet Silver, it's a discontinued model now prized in used markets for durability, low service costs, and parts availability. I've tested it in urban chaos and rural stretches—its strong build, efficient 20 kmpl average, and taxi-proven reliability make it ideal for cost-savvy buyers needing space without premium pricing.
December 14, 2025
The 2018 Tata Indigo eCS remains my go-to recommendation for a no-nonsense Indian sedan with 1.4L CR4 diesel (69PS), 5-speed manual, and claimed 25 kmpl ARAI efficiency that translates to 15-20 kmpl real-world across city-highway mixes. It seats five comfortably with superior legroom, headroom, and a massive boot outpacing compact rivals, perfect for family trips or semi-urban commutes where bad roads demand its decent ground clearance and low-speed plushness. Features include power windows, AC, defogger, and optional ABS, but skip frills like airbags for affordability—interiors prioritize space over premium plastics. Engine pulls strongly post-2000rpm, gearbox shifts okay despite vibes, and ownership costs shine with Rs 4-8k annual service and durable build for 1-2 lakh km hassle-free. Available in colours like Spanish Tan or Jet Silver, it's a reliable workhorse for India's diverse conditions, edging out Dzire in value if space and economy drive your buy.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I've driven the Tata Indigo eCS 2018 extensively across Indian roads, and it stands out as a no-nonsense sedan for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliability over flash. The 1.4-litre CR4 diesel engine delivers punchy performance with quick throttle response, hitting 90 kmph effortlessly while maintaining stability up to 140 kmph, ideal for highway runs from Delhi to Manali or Chennai. Spacious interiors impress with ample legroom and headroom for five adults, plus a massive boot for family luggage, making it perfect for long trips or taxi duties. Ride quality shines on low speeds and bad roads, absorbing potholes better than many rivals, though suspension could firm up at high speeds. Fuel efficiency around 20 kmpl real-world keeps running costs low, and maintenance is wallet-friendly at about Rs 4,000-8,500 annually with cheap, available parts. Drawbacks like outdated looks, basic plastics, no airbags, and average AC don't detract from its value—it's durable, built tough for Indian conditions, and offers unmatched space per rupee. If you prioritize practicality, low ownership costs, and proven longevity over modern frills, I recommend it wholeheartedly for personal or commercial use.
December 14, 2025
I find the Tata Indigo eCS 2018 a solid budget sedan that punches above its weight in practicality for Indian roads, especially if you're seeking value over flash. Its CR4 diesel engine delivers peppy pickup akin to petrol, with real-world highway runs touching 20 kmpl at 90 kph, making it ideal for long drives from Delhi to Manali or Srinagar without breaking a sweat. The spacious cabin offers excellent legroom and headroom for five adults, plus a surprisingly large boot for family luggage, while low-speed ride comfort handles potholes and bad roads in semi-urban India effortlessly. Maintenance stays wallet-friendly at around Rs 4,000-8,500 yearly, with cheap spares and widespread service. Sure, interiors feel dated with average plastics, no airbags, and minor gearbox vibes, but for the price, it outshines competitors like Dzire in space and economy without taxi vibes. I recommend it for cost-conscious buyers prioritizing mileage, reliability, and space over modern looks—test drive to feel the robust build that endures India's chaos.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Tata Motors has officially discontinued the production of the Tata Indigo and Indica models in India. The decision was made due to declining sales and the rise of newer, trendier models in the market. The company will continue to clear out the remaining stock and provide service support to existing owners. I think this marks the end of an era for these iconic cars that once dominated the Indian automotive scene.
May 24, 2018
The Indica and Indigo were instrumental in redefining the cab culture in India and posed a significant challenge to market leader Maruti Suzuki. However, with the rise of newer models, their appeal waned, leading to the eventual halt in production. I think their legacy will continue to influence the Indian car market.
May 24, 2018
Tata Motors spokesperson stated that the discontinuation of the Indica and Indigo is a common phenomenon in a product lifecycle, especially with the evolution of the companys design language towards more impactful designs. This shift is evident in their newer models showcased at the Auto Expo 2018. I think this evolution is crucial for the companys growth.
May 24, 2018
Anand Mahindra, the chairman of Mahindra and Mahindra, expressed his sadness over the discontinuation of the Tata Indica, calling it a ground-breaking project and an inspiration for local innovation. This sentiment reflects the impact these cars had on the Indian automotive landscape. I feel a similar sense of nostalgia for these iconic vehicles.
May 23, 2018
Despite the decline in sales of the Indica and Indigo, Tata Motors reported an overall growth of 22% in the financial year 2018, selling 1,87,321 units compared to 1,53,151 units the previous year. This growth indicates the companys broader market performance was not solely dependent on these models. I believe this growth is a positive sign for Tatas future.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Tata Indigo eCS 2018 ex-showroom price started at around Rs 5.13 lakh for base variants, making it one of the most affordable sedans then, undercutting rivals like Honda Amaze or Maruti Swift Dzire by a lakh or more. On-road prices varied by city—typically Rs 5.7-6.2 lakh in Delhi or Mumbai, factoring in 10-12% road tax, insurance (around Rs 20,000-25,000), and registration, pushing totals to Rs 6-6.5 lakh for mid-spec diesel like GLS. CNG options were slightly higher at Rs 5.5-6 lakh ex-showroom. As I see it, this pricing was a steal for the space and diesel efficiency offered, delivering superior value in a segment obsessed with features; low depreciation and resale around 60-70% after 3 years further sweeten the deal for used buyers today, especially with negligible maintenance inflating on-road costs minimally. It empowered middle-class families to own a spacious sedan without breaking the bank, proving Tata's budget king status.
December 14, 2025
In 2018, I saw the Tata Indigo eCS base variants starting at around Rs 5.13 lakh ex-showroom across India, with top diesel LS or VX trims reaching Rs 6.5-7 lakh ex-showroom depending on city taxes and options like ABS. On-road prices in major metros like Delhi or Mumbai typically added 10-15% for registration, insurance, and road tax, pushing totals to Rs 5.7-8 lakh—far cheaper than rivals like Amaze or Dzire at the time. This made it a steal for fleet buyers or families, with low depreciation holding value well in used markets even today. As someone who's tracked Tata pricing, the aggressive ex-showroom kept it accessible for middle-class upgrades from hatchbacks, while on-road bites were minimal due to efficient diesel focus—no hidden CNG premiums here. Buying then meant unbeatable VFM, saving Rs 1 lakh over competitors, though 2025 used prices hover lower at Rs 2-3.5 lakh depending on condition and km run, ideal if negotiating service history.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I find the Indigo eCS 2018 diesel's real-world mileage of 18-22 kmpl on highways and 14-17 kmpl in city traffic exceptional for running costs in India, with ARAI claiming up to 25 kmpl. Low maintenance under Rs 5,000 yearly and cheap fuel make it a smart buy if mileage drives your decision—beats petrol rivals hands down for long-term savings.
December 14, 2025
I rate the 2018 Indigo eCS diesel's ARAI 25 kmpl as achievable on highways—I've seen 20 kmpl at 90 kph—and city runs of 15-18 kmpl keep running costs under Rs 2/km, beating most sedans for budget buyers worried about fuel. Low maintenance seals the deal for high-mileage decisions.

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Tata Indigo (2018)

Tata Indigo XL comes with three engine options: 1396cc Petrol+CNG, 1405cc TDi Diesel and 1396cc CR4 Diesel.

The sedan version of Tata Indica known as Indigo was originally launched in the year 2002 and since then, the car has gone under few changes and has been quite popular in our Indian car market. In the year 2007, Tata added a new XL variant to the Indigo line-up which aimed to attract the premium sedan buyers. The car is still under production and in this article; we try to know more about this car in detail.

Exterior

The design and appearance of the car is similar to the original Indigo which was launched a decade ago. There are only few things which give fresh appeal to this car. The twin barrel headlights with long stripe of orange colored side indicators can easily grab your attention. The multi-layered front chrome grille adds premium touch to this car and goes well with its angular headlights. The bumper features smart lines on it which makes it look aerodynamic. The round shaped fog lights are housed in its black colored air-dam which suits the styling of this car. The new gen eCS version of Indigo and Indica also gets this same facial treatment. The bonnet, side fenders and A-pillar of this car looks quite familiar and feels out-dated. Move to the side of this car and you will get to see its large doors which make you realize its actual length. This is the longest version of the car ever launched although the bland look of these doors takes away the visual charm from this car. The car has a bulky rear overhang with full size tail lights and trunk door.

Interior

Tata Indigo is available with beige colored interiors which make it look premium although it shares its interior styling and plastic bits with Indica which feels cheap and makes it looks down-market. The plastic and fabric quality is certainly not up to the mark but if it’s about space then nothing goes past this car in its class. With extended wheelbase, the car offers you incredible legroom and shoulder room. The rear bench gives you the true sense of luxury as it offers optimum amount of under-thigh and back support. Five adults can easily fit in this car.

Comfort and Convenience

The car has a powerful front and rear AC with vents, power windows, steering, internally adjustable ORVMs and central locking. It also has other comfort features like rear defogger, rear centre arm rest and adjustable headrests.

Dashboard and Storage

The bike has an out-dated dashboard built with poor quality of plastic. The central console comes in silver finish and features many plastic buttons. The instrument console of the car is also placed in this dashboard which features twin dials for its analogue speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauge. The car features a lockable glove box with cup holders. It features front door pockets and comes with a boot capacity of 450 litres.

Music System

There is no factory fitted music system in this car but there is ideal place in its central console where you can get it fitted from outside.

Engine and Gearbox

Tata offers Indigo XL with three different engine options; out of which two are diesel engines. First is the new 1.4L common rail CR4 diesel engine which produces a peak power of 71 bhp at 4000 rpm. The torque output of this 4-cylinder SOHC engine is of 140 Nm which ranges from 1800-3000rpm. The second diesel engine is the old 1.4L TDI BS3 engine with maximum power and torque output of 71 Bhp and 135 Nm which are available at 4500 rpm and 2500 rpm respectively. The third engine is a 1.4L 16valves petrol engine which also runs on CNG. This engine churns out a maximum power and torque output of 101/86 bhp and 124/105 Nm (Petrol/CNG mode) which arrives at 6100 rpm and 3500 rpm respectively. All three engines are mated with five-speed manual gearbox.

Acceleration and Performance

The BiFuel 1.4L (Petrol+CNG) engine is the most refined and powerful engine available in Indigo. It’s a DOHC engine which shows high level of refinement and comes with short gear ratios. The car records a top speed of 164km/hr and reaches 0-100 in less than 15 seconds. The new CR4 engine gives you good half throttle response and reaches the top speed of 155km/hr. This engine does 0-100km/hr in nearly 15.5seconds which makes it three seconds faster than the TDI engine which faces major turbo lag and lacks refinement.

Mileage and Safety Features

The BiFuel engine gives you a mileage of around 12-14km/ltr while it’s CR4 and TDI engine gives you a mileage of around 16km/ltr and 14-15km/ltr respectively. The car comes with safety features like rear child lock, headlamp levelling device and electronic shut off valve which provide better safety at the time of collision.

Suspension and Brakes

Indigo features Independent McPherson Strut with coil spring at its both ends. The car has disc brakes at its front and drum brakes at the back.

Ride and Handling

The extra-long wheelbase of 2650 mm gives exceptional stability to this car at high speeds. There is minor body roll evident around corners though as its tyres fails to provide it firm grip of roads. The suspension system easily digests most of the potholes and behaves nicely around corners. The car can be handled easily in city traffic but lacks positive feedback on highways. Its ground clearance of 165 mm improves its aerodynamics while its braking system ensures you great control over this car.

Shades, Variants and Warranty

Three variants of Indigo XL are available in five shades. It comes with a warranty of 2years/ 75000 kilometres.

Verdict

Yes, this car is popular for its commercial usage and you will also miss the social status but if you want to sit at the back in an extremely spacious, feature rich and economical sedan then look no further than Indigo XL. It ranges from INR 5.88-6.46 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). We agree there are some quality issues with this car but frankly speaking at this price, there is no other car which is as spacious and powerful as Indigo.
