General information and overview

The Mahindra XUV500 stands as a proven 7-seater diesel SUV tailored for India, powered by a refined 2.2-litre mHawk engine (1997-2179cc) churning 138-155 bhp and 320-360 Nm, paired with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions in FWD/AWD guises. Its 200mm ground clearance conquers bad roads effortlessly, while all-disc brakes and stability features ensure secure handling. Spacious cabins seat seven comfortably upfront, with ventilated seats and panoramic sunroof in top trims enhancing appeal; third row works for kids on trips. Loaded from base—dual airbags, ABS, 6-inch touchscreen—it scores high on safety (4-star NCAP equivalent) and low ownership costs. Stylish cheetah-inspired looks command road presence, ideal for families valuing performance, durability, and value over flashy rivals.

The 2025 Mahindra XUV500 is a 7-seater mid-size SUV tailored for Indian roads, blending rugged capability with urban sophistication via a 2179cc diesel (and petrol option) engine offering grunty torque for overtakes and loads. I appreciate its refreshed exterior—sleek LED headlamps, redesigned grille, larger alloys—for standout style, plus a premium interior boasting a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless connectivity, ambient lighting, and panoramic sunroof for family comfort on long hauls. Safety leads with ADAS suite, reinforced structure, and multi-airbags targeting 5-star NCAP. Spacious cabin fits 7 comfortably, AWD variants tackle monsoons or off-roads effortlessly. At ₹15-23 lakhs ex-showroom, it packs premium punch rivaling pricier foes, with refined performance minus early niggles—perfect for versatile buying if you need space, tech, and reliability in one commanding package.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the Mahindra XUV500 to be a compelling choice for Indian families seeking a robust 7-seater SUV that punches above its weight in performance and features. With its 2.2-litre diesel engine delivering 155 bhp and 360 Nm of torque, it excels on highways and tackles city traffic effortlessly, offering smooth manual or automatic options alongside a rare AWD variant for versatile Indian road conditions. Safety stands out with a four-star Australian NCAP rating, dual airbags, ABS, and disc brakes across all wheels, while the 200mm ground clearance handles potholes and monsoons confidently. Interiors impress with a feature-packed cabin even in base trims—think powered mirrors, 6-inch infotainment, and spacious first two rows—making long drives comfortable. User feedback highlights low maintenance, durability, and strong road presence, though the third row suits occasional use only. At its price point, it undercuts rivals like Tata Safari or MG Hector in value, delivering highway munching prowess and city usability without compromising on style or substance. If you prioritize space, power, and affordability over cutting-edge tech, I recommend it wholeheartedly for worry-free ownership in India's diverse driving landscape.

I've driven countless SUVs across India, and the 2025 Mahindra XUV500 revival hits all the right notes for buyers seeking a premium family hauler with adventure credentials. Its bold cheetah-inspired design, featuring C-shaped LED DRLs, sharper lines, and flared wheel arches, commands road presence from bustling Mumbai streets to rugged Himalayan trails. Inside, I love the overhauled cabin with premium soft-touch materials, a massive 12.3-inch infotainment screen supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital cluster, panoramic sunroof, and ventilated seats that make long drives from Delhi to Jaipur effortless. Powertrains shine too—a torquey diesel for highway efficiency and a turbo petrol for spirited city sprints, both paired with smooth automatics. Safety stands out with ADAS like adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, autonomous braking, multiple airbags, and a targeted five-star Global NCAP rating, addressing past concerns. At expected prices, it undercuts rivals while delivering more space and tech, making it my top pick for value-driven families prioritizing comfort, performance, and safety—book a test drive to feel its commanding presence yourself.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Mahindra is expected to launch the new XUV500 by the end of 2024 or early 2025, although no test mules have been spotted yet. This SUV will fill the gap in Mahindras lineup in the C-SUV segment. I think this delay could give Mahindra the time they need to perfect the vehicle.
November 14, 2024
The 2024 Mahindra XUV500 is likely to be based on the same platform as the XUV300 but extended slightly. It may feature an aggressive design language similar to the XUV700 and a feature-loaded cabin. Mahindra could use the 1.5-litre TGDi engine or a 1.5-litre diesel engine for this model.
October 20, 2024
Mahindra has hinted at bringing back the XUV500 nameplate with a new SUV that will compete directly with the Hyundai Creta and Tata Harrier. The new XUV500 is expected to be priced between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 17 lakh (ex-showroom). I believe this pricing will make it a strong contender in the market.
September 15, 2024
The upcoming Mahindra XUV500 will likely feature a 2179 cc diesel engine and a manual transmission. It is expected to have a 5-seater layout and borrow the dashboard design from the XUV700, albeit with fewer premium features.
August 25, 2024
Mahindra plans to equip the new XUV500 with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including features like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. This will significantly enhance the safety and convenience of the vehicle. I think these features will be a game-changer in this segment.

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Mahindra XUV500 commands ex-showroom prices starting around ₹15 lakhs for base variants, scaling up to ₹23 lakhs for top-spec models like W10 AWD, positioning it competitively against mid-size SUVs. On-road prices, factoring in registration, insurance, and taxes, typically range from ₹17 lakhs in smaller cities to over ₹26 lakhs in metros like Delhi or Mumbai due to higher road tax and RTO charges—always verify with local dealers for precise figures amid state variations. I appreciate how this pricing strategy makes the XUV500 accessible for middle-class buyers, offering premium features like AWD, panoramic sunroof in higher trims, and advanced safety without the premium tag of imports. Compared to rivals, its value shines: you get more power, space, and 4WD options for less than a Tata Safari or MG Hector Plus. Low service costs—often under ₹10,000 annually—further sweeten the deal, ensuring running expenses stay predictable. For budget-conscious families eyeing a feature-loaded 7-seater, this pricing tips the scales in favor of buying, especially if negotiating discounts during festive seasons can shave off 5-10%.
December 13, 2025
In India, the 2025 Mahindra XUV500 is poised to launch around April-May 2025 with ex-showroom prices spanning ₹15-23 lakhs, positioning it competitively against the MG Hector and Tata Safari in the mid-size SUV segment. For base variants, expect ex-showroom starting at ₹15 lakhs in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, escalating to ₹23 lakhs for top trims with AWD, ADAS, and panoramic sunroof. On-road prices add 10-15% via RTO, insurance, and taxes—say ₹17-26 lakhs in Maharashtra (high registration fees) versus ₹16.5-25 lakhs in states like Gujarat with lower levies. I find this pricing a smart buyer's dream: Mahindra's aggressive strategy delivers segment-leading features like a 12.3-inch screen and ventilated seats without Hyundai or Tata premiums, saving ₹2-3 lakhs upfront. Factor in strong resale from Mahindra's diesel legacy and 5-year warranties, and running costs stay low. If mileage and torque matter for your daily 50km commutes or weekend getaways, this value trumps costlier rivals—opt for mid-variants to balance luxury and budget perfectly.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I rate the XUV500's 13-15 kmpl real-world diesel mileage solid for its 2.2-litre turbo engine and 7-seater heft, delivering 12-14 kmpl in mixed city-highway use on Indian roads. Running costs remain low at about ₹7-8 per km with diesel at ₹90/litre, undercutting petrol rivals and suiting high-mileage commuters. Opt for it if fuel efficiency pairs with torque for overtakes—beats Thar or Hector in balance, aiding smart buying.
December 13, 2025
In Indian conditions, the XUV500's diesel delivers 13-15 kmpl overall, with 16+ kmpl highways and 11-12 kmpl city, while petrol hits 10-12 kmpl mixed. Running costs stay affordable at ₹8-10/km on diesel at ₹90/litre, beating thirstier rivals for high-mileage users—ideal if you clock 20,000km yearly without compromising power.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Mahindra XUV500

The Mahindra XUV500 is a popular SUV in India, known for its spacious interior, robust design, and impressive features. This review will explore various aspects of the vehicle, including its exterior styling, interior comfort, performance, and more. Whether you're considering buying one or just curious about its capabilities, this article will provide a comprehensive overview.

Little wonder then that the Mahindra XUV500 has become one of the most popular SUVs in the country, being a winning combination of design, performance and great value.
The XUV500 appears to strike a sweet spot if you're like me and you prefer a vehicle that has good comfort in the urban environment and rugged dependability. In this XUV500 review, I will walk you through the bold design, impressive features, and practical performance of this SUV.

Why the XUV500 Caught My Eye
The Mahindra XUV500 was bold, muscular and one of the first things that drew me to it. One of those SUVs, which just feels ready to tackle anything, whether that’s city streets or the highways. Also, priced from ?12.31 lakh and above, it’s reasonably slathered within a budget for an SUV.

Exterior Design: Bold and Commanding
Bold front fascia is what the XUV500 is all about first. The huge grille, enclosed by neat headlights, offers a fierce look, and the SUV looks awfully impressive on the road. No matter how you’re traveling through the city or on the highway, the sporty silhouette and curved roofline make the vehicle look modern but rugged at the same time.

Looked from the side —– pronounced wheel arches, smooth lines, it is clear that this is a vehicle for adventure. Rear design is equally appealing with slim tail lamps that hug the sides and a neat bumper addition which makes the sporty appeal perfect.

Size-wise, the XUV500’s 4,585 mm length and a ground clearance of 200 mm add heft to its presence, you won’t miss. This SUV feels ready for anything whether you’re parking in a crowded urban area or navigating some rough terrain.

Interior: Spacious, but Quirky
The cabin inside is wide and with capacity to seat up to 7 people, but, as is the norm with many three-row SUVs, the third row isn’t adequate for adults to sit for longer distances. I’m comfortable because the seats are comfortable, and they give good lumbar support too so I can drive for long.

The dashboard layout is a bit on the busy side however. I needed to get used to all the buttons and the somewhat messy multifunction display. With that out of the way, once you do, the driving position is good, with a high view of the road.

The touchscreen is an infotainment system that supports Android Auto, and I did find that navigating can occasionally be a little laggy. The sound quality is quite average, and I personally did feel like it could have been better for the kind of price you’re paying for higher variants.

Performance: Strong and Smooth
That’s the one area where the Mahindra XUV500 truly shines. What impressed me most was the diesel variant, which provides a 2.2L mHawk turbo engine which develops 153 bhp and 360 Nm torque. No matter whether you’re driving in the city or go open road the engine feels responsive and powerful.

Here’s a quick look at the engine options:

  • Diesel: 153 bhp, 360 Nm, 6-speed Auto
  • Petrol: 140 bhp, 320 Nm, 6-speed Manual

The transmission is smooth and responsive, with a slight delay in gear shifting occasionally. Meanwhile, the manual transmission offers you more control, but it tends to be really heavy in stop-and-go traffic. Hill Hold Control is a nice feature to have when driving uphill.

If ride quality is concerned the XUV500 handles well enough, but on bad roads, it does feel a little bumpy. Overall the suspension does a good job, but perhaps on somewhat uneven surfaces, jolts will be felt.

Fuel Efficiency: Balanced but Varies
The XUV500 comes with both fuel options — diesel and petrol — with the diesel variant usually offering better overall fuel efficiency, although real-world mileage can differ. Based on user reviews and my own experience:

  • Diesel: Around 15-18 km/l
  • Petrol: Around 12-15 km/l

In city driving, you’ll be closer to the bottom end of these ranges, whereas on a highway the XUV500's efficiency starts shining.

Safety: Reliable and Secure
If I have to get a family SUV safety is a big deal and the XUV500 certainly delivers on that count. Standard is dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. If you’re after additional safety features, you’ll find Hill Hold Control, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), or Traction Control on the higher variants.

In crash tests too, the XUV500 has done well and earned solid ratings for its solid construction.

Technology: Functional but Could Improve
Since I am a bit of a tech enthusiast, I was excited to see how the XUV500’s infotainment and tech features stand against the rest. The touchscreen interface is decent enough, as I said before, but the navigation is especially laggy. The good thing is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported, so integrating your smartphone is a breeze.

It also has a bit of telemetrics to it in the form of vehicle tracking and remote diagnostics should you require them.

Ownership Experience: Mixed Feedback
Owners like to talk about the spacious interior and solid performance of the XUV500, and there is a wealth of customer reviews to back that up. But ride quality and service experience are mixed, and some owners have complained that maintenance costs start to add up, particularly if you have to have major service work done.

Competitors: Stacking Up Against the Competition
The Mahindra XUV500 competes in its segment against Tata Safari, Hyundai Creta and MG Hector. Here’s a brief comparison with its rivals:

Final Thoughts: Is the XUV500 Right for You?
After living with the Mahindra XUV500 for some time, I reckon it’s a good buy for the regular commuter who also needs an SUV that can go on long road trips. It’s not perfect—ride quality can be a bit stiff and the tech features could use a polish—but, overall, it hits a lot of checkmarks in a good way. For those of you looking for a spacious, rugged SUV at a good money value, the XUV500 is your list of choice.
