General information and overview

The Jaguar XJ sold in India is a full‑size luxury sedan available in multiple variants including long‑wheelbase editions, powered commonly by a 3.0‑litre diesel V6/inline‑six producing roughly 296–306 bhp and very high torque in the 689–700 Nm range paired to an 8‑speed automatic and rear‑ or all‑wheel drive depending on spec; it seats five, offers a long 3157mm wheelbase on LWB models, large boot capacity and extensive luxury kit such as 18‑way adjustable heated/ventilated/massage seats, 360‑degree camera, adaptive LED lighting and premium trim options. The XJ’s construction emphasises ride refinement and rear‑seat comfort, with adaptive air or dynamic suspension tuning that delivers composed highway manners and a hushed cabin; kerb weight and size mean it is less agile in tight city traffic and requires careful parking and ground‑clearance consideration. If you want exclusivity, rear‑seat luxury and strong straight‑line performance in India and have access to authorised Jaguar service support, the XJ remains a persuasive, characterful alternative to the German large sedans.

The Jaguar XJ stands as a flagship full-size luxury sedan tailored for India, boasting a commanding 5255mm length, 3157mm wheelbase, and low 104mm ground clearance on its sleek aluminium body, seating five in supreme comfort with 77-litre fuel tank for long hauls. Its hero 3.0-litre diesel engine pumps out 301.73bhp at 4000rpm and 689Nm from 1800rpm through an 8-speed automatic AWD transmission, ensuring brisk acceleration and 250kmph top speed ideal for our highways. Key highlights include opulent leather seats with 18-way adjustment, heating, cooling, massage, four-zone AC, 360-degree camera, adaptive LEDs, and park assist, all in a 1931kg kerb weight package rivaling Audi A8L and BMW 7-Series. ARAI claims 14.47kmpl, making it practical amid India's fuel dynamics. Available in variants up to XJ50 at Rs 1.11 crore ex-showroom, I consider it a buyer's delight for its sport-luxury balance—effortless power, silent refinement, and standout styling that turns heads while delivering daily usability and prestige ownership.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the Jaguar XJ to be a compelling choice if you prioritise rear‑seat comfort, presence and a distinctly British character over sheer badge ubiquity; the long wheelbase cabin, soft yet supportive seats with massage and four‑zone climate control deliver a serene environment for chauffeured or executive use, while the 3.0‑litre diesel inline‑six/ V6 driveline provides effortless mid‑range torque for relaxed cruising and confident overtakes (specs and features per India model line‑up). The XJ’s road manners combine compliant ride with composed body control thanks to adaptive suspension, but I recognise its limited dealer network and higher running/service costs versus mainstream luxury rivals, which temper its appeal for buyers who need broad aftersales support. If exclusivity, cabin refinement and a strong highway presence matter more to you than the very latest infotainment frills or lowest ownership costs, the XJ stands out in its segment and rewards buyers who value character and comfort over conservative badge choice.

I find the Jaguar XJ a compelling luxury sedan that masterfully blends British elegance with dynamic performance, making it an ideal choice for discerning buyers in India seeking chauffeur-driven opulence or spirited drives. Powered by a refined 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine delivering 302bhp and a massive 689Nm of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic and AWD, it surges from standstill with effortless authority, achieving a top speed of 250kmph while handling India's undulating roads with composed agility thanks to adaptive suspension. The interior is a sanctuary of premium leather, wood veneers, 18-way adjustable seats with massage, ventilation, and four-zone climate control, complemented by a 360-degree camera and park assist for effortless urban maneuvering. At 14.47kmpl ARAI mileage, running costs remain reasonable for its class despite the premium positioning. Rivals like the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series offer similar luxury, but the XJ's sportier edge and exclusivity stand out. I recommend the XJ50 Special Edition at Rs 1.11 crore ex-showroom for its loaded features; it's not just a car, but a statement of refined power that elevates every journey, justifying the investment for those prioritizing prestige and pleasure over outright tech overload.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Jaguar has confirmed that the traditional Jaguar XJ will not be continued in its current form, and instead, the brand is focusing on an all-electric future. The new electric lineup, set to debut in 2025, will include a four-door GT and possibly a large sedan, marking a significant shift away from the classic XJ design. I think this move is bold and necessary for Jaguar to stay competitive in the luxury electric vehicle market.
November 14, 2024
The original plans for an electric XJ were confirmed in 2019, but the model was delayed and eventually canceled. However, Jaguar has since revived the idea with a new electric XJ concept that will debut in 2025. This new model is expected to have a range of up to 435 miles and will be built on the in-house JEA platform. I believe this new direction will help Jaguar appeal to a wider audience.
September 21, 2023
In 2023, Jaguar announced a reimagined strategy that includes becoming an electric-only brand by 2025. This strategy involves a new portfolio of emotionally engaging designs and pioneering next-generation technologies. The upcoming electric XJ successor is expected to feature a radically minimalist design with sharp surfacing, generous proportions, and advanced technology like a digital rear view mirror.
September 21, 2023
The current Jaguar XJ, although luxurious and rewarding to drive, falls short in terms of comfort and modern technologies compared to its rivals like the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8. The XJs interior is lavish, but some materials are below the standard of its competitors. It also lacks advanced features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
May 18, 2023
In terms of pricing, the Jaguar XJ has a range from £56,365 to £122,735 for new models, and used models start at around £30,995. This pricing reflects its luxury status but also highlights the need for updates to compete with newer models from other brands.

Pricing details and changes

In India the Jaguar XJ’s ex‑showroom pricing sits in the full‑size luxury range; reported listings and dealer quotes show ex‑showroom figures roughly between ₹99 lakh and over ₹1.3 crore depending on variant and model year, with commonly cited ranges around ₹1.03–1.11 crore for mainstream variants and higher figures for long‑wheelbase or top trims—individual dealer pricing and model year adjustments apply. On‑road prices vary substantially by city because of state taxes, registration and optional extras; for example a Chennai breakdown showed an ex‑showroom near ₹1.11 crore with RTO and other charges pushing the on‑road figure significantly higher when local taxes are included. From my perspective you should budget for a sizeable premium over ex‑showroom for on‑road transfer, and also add higher annual maintenance, insurance and service costs typical of low‑volume luxury imports; negotiate on dealer discounts, certified pre‑owned alternatives, and factor in access to authorised service centres in your city before committing.
December 20, 2025
In India, the Jaguar XJ, focusing on the popular XJ50 Special Edition diesel variant, carries an ex-showroom price of Rs 1.11 crore, with base Premium Luxury starting at Rs 99.01 lakh and Portfolio at around Rs 1.03 crore, all reflecting Jaguar's positioning in the ultra-luxury segment. On-road prices escalate significantly due to high RTO charges, insurance, and taxes; for instance, in cities like Chennai, the XJ50 on-road price nears Rs 1.28 crore after adding roughly Rs 16.72 lakh RTO and other fees, while in places like Noamundi, it could hit Rs 1.09 crore including road tax of about Rs 8.96 lakh on the Rs 99.56 lakh ex-showroom base. I view these figures as par for the course in India's luxury market, where the XJ undercuts slightly more gadget-heavy rivals like the Audi A8L or Mercedes S-Class top trims, offering superior value through its diesel efficiency and AWD grip suited to our diverse terrains. The premium pricing demands careful consideration of resale value, which holds decently for Jags, and financing options with EMIs around Rs 2.47-2.49 lakh make it accessible for HNIs. Ultimately, I see the cost as a worthwhile premium for unmatched driving drama and cabin serenity that enhances ownership satisfaction in a segment where ex-showroom is just the entry to true luxury living.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

Official ARAI or manufacturer figures for the diesel XJ in India are around 12.9–14.5 kmpl depending on source and variant, but real‑world urban running will be lower and highway figures higher, so I would estimate practical average running of 8–11 kmpl in mixed Indian conditions. Given the car’s heavy kerb weight and luxury equipment, evaluate fuel budget and usage pattern—if you mostly do long runs the economy improves, but for high city mileage ownership costs will be materially higher than mainstream sedans.
December 20, 2025
I rate the Jaguar XJ's 14.47kmpl ARAI diesel mileage as respectable for a 3.0-litre V6 luxury sedan, delivering real-world figures of 10-12kmpl in city traffic and 14-16kmpl on highways, keeping annual running costs around Rs 2-3 lakh for 15,000km usage with diesel at Rs 90/litre. It's more frugal than petrol rivals, aiding buying decisions if fuel economy matters alongside luxury.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Jaguar XJ

The Jaguar XJ is the true definition of a luxury sports car through its lavish style and functionality and aggressive behaviour on the road.

Jaguar is considered as one of the primeval competitors in the big league of Indian automobile market. Ever since Jaguar was bought by Tata, the automobile heavyweight has been making its presence much more concrete than it ever was, in the luxury car market. The Jaguar XJ is the true definition of a luxury sports car through its lavish style and functionality and aggressive behavior on the road. The car exhibits a feeling of grandeur and confidence through its aerospace inspired aluminium technology. The four-door saloon has a body of a coupe`. The deep-set mesh grille, with Xenon light clusters, wide bonnet, the sculpted power bulge and the sporty wheel aches are total attention-grabbers. The panoramic glass sun roof extends from the top of the windscreen area to the back of the rear seats.

Once you enter this epitome of luxury, you will be deeply impressed by its innovative and contemporary lavish standards. The interior provides ample headroom and legroom and the first-class leather adorns the seats, instrumental panel, centre console, armrests and door tops. The phosphorus blue lighting mode provide a constant stylish illumination while the mirror-matched wood veneers give an appearance of a crafty arch. The Jaguar XJ is loaded with high-tech gadgets and instruments which are very driver-oriented. 12.3 inch glass screen encompasses the virtual dials, a high-definition touch screen with virtual instrument display shows climate control, telephone, audio systems and the XJ’s Media Hub provides easy connection to car’s entertainment system. The safety of the car is ensured through a protective body shell, air bags, safe seating, pedestrian contact sensing system, adaptive cruise control, Advanced braking, Blind Spot Monitor and Tyre Pressure Monitoring.

Exterior

At the first glance, people were in awe of the design that Jaguar had given to XJ. This is what led most of the automobile aficionados to throw their money into the ring as Jaguar has set a benchmark by designing the outer body using material which dwindles the fuel consumption to considerable extent. The metal used to construct the exoskeleton of Jaguar XJ is purely high-quality lightweight aluminium. This in turn also makes sure that the driver does not face any sort of hindrance on the part of handling the car. Both the front as well as the rear fascia of the saloon sedan has been given a sleek and stylish design with LED lights.

Interior

As we make our way into the cabin, we are greeted with a plethora of cutting-edge styling and technology generously offered by Jaguar to epitomize the levels of luxury. Jaguar has left no stones unturned to showcase high-spirited craftsmanship which can be seeing in the dashboard as well as the three-spoke high-quality leather steering wheel. Advanced multimedia features are there on the steering wheel for the convenience of the driver. Both the front side of the cabin as well as the rear have been covered by finest carpet set and soft-grain leather has been used in order to cover the front and the rear seats.

Comfort and Convenience

There are no sophisticated items inside the cabin and whatever technology available for the use of the passengers and the driver has been put up in a user-friendly manner. There is a button for almost everything inside the cabin which ensures that the passengers travelling in the car have no thoughts regarding the level of comfort that Jaguar has blessed XJ with. The “bathed in light” feature makes travelling at night in the cabin much more luxurious as it illuminates the whole cabin to a serene blue colour.

Music System

Jaguar XJ boasts of a 1200W Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System whose controls are there on the steering wheel as well. This music system comes with the Audyssey MultEQ audio tuning system. There are a total of 20 powerful speakers which have been strategically placed all over the cabin in order to ensure that there is a 3D effect of the sound. A docking panel has been provided specially for insertion of media devices externally. 30 GB hard-drive space has been provided with the sound system wherein we can store hundreds and thousands of songs.

Engine and Gearbox

Jaguar XJ has immense power lying beneath its hood as the company has pushed a 5.0 L V8 AJ GEN-III engine inside. It is also available in diesel.

Jaguar XJ is available with three engine options: 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine, 5.0 litre super-charged V8 petrol engine and 2993cc, 4 cylinder diesel engine. The 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine generates maximum power of 380 Bhp with maximum torque of 461 Nm at 3500 rpm. The 5.0 litre super-charged V8 petrol engine develops maximum power of 510 bhp with maximum torque of 625 nm. The 2993cc, 4 cylinder diesel engine develops maximum power of 275 Bhp with maximum torque of 600 Nm.

Acceleration and Performance

With a powerful engine, naturally the acceleration rate of the car increases. Thus, Jaguar XJ with the mean engine hidden beneath its hood accelerates from 0-60 km/hour in around 4 seconds thus achieving a top speed of 250 km/hr. When it comes to performance, all the components of Jaguar XJ collaborate to give the driver a feel of immense power behind the steering wheel.

Mileage

It is usually a stereotype that a car of this caliber and class does not have a very promising mileage owing to high high-powered engine. Jaguar XJ gives out a mileage of 5.8 km/L in city and a mileage of 10.5 km/L on highways.

Safety Features

When it comes to safety, Jaguar has left no stones unturned as a car of this class naturally has to have top-notch safety features which safeguard the driver as well as the passengers seated inside the cabin. A surfeit of features oriented towards safety has been put into the car some of which are 3-Flash land indicators, pedestrian contact sensors, front as well as rear airbags, side curtain airbag, front and rear seat-belt reminder and front seat-whiplash protection system. A few more unique inclusions have been made which include electric parking brake, Adaptive Dynamics, Cruise Control with Speed Limiter (Automatic), Dynamic Stability Control and quick-ratio power steering.

Shades

There are a total of 14 shades in which Jaguar XJ comes. These are Ultimate Black Metallic, Pearl Grey Metallic, Ebony, Cashmere Metallic, Vapour Grey Metallic, Porcelain White, Indigo Metallic, Frost Blue Metallic, Botanical Green, Caviar Metallic, Claret Metallic, Spectrum Blue Metallic, Lunar Grey Metallic and finally Liquid Silver Metallic. Jaguar XJ Variants There are a total of four variants of Jaguar XJ which are burning rubber on Indian roads at present. Out of these, three run on petrol engine whereas there is one diesel variant. The demand for the diesel variant is somewhat on the rise owing to the skyrocketing prices of petrol.

Verdict

After drilling Jaguar XJ from all angles, we can say that it does justify the price tag it comes with. With lavish interiors and rock-solid exteriors, Jaguar XJ is surely one of the tough bulls in the luxury car coliseum.
