General information and overview

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata stands out in India as a seventh-generation mid-size sedan with a longer, wider stance on an enhanced platform using high-strength steel for superior rigidity and safety. I value its evolved Fluidic 2.0 styling—restrained yet premium, with a clean cabin drawing from Hyundai's upscale models like the Santa Fe, featuring quality materials, ample space for five, leather seats, and an 8-inch infotainment with Android Auto pioneering smartphone integration. Key aspects include the punchy 2.4-litre direct-injection petrol engine (190bhp, 25kgm) mated to a 6-speed automatic for smooth FWD performance, plus advanced aids like blind-spot detection, lane warnings, auto emergency braking, and radar cruise—crucial for Indian roads. Comfort shines with low NVH, supportive seats, and a vast boot, while its 12-13 kmpl mileage and Hyundai service network ensure practical ownership. For buyers, it's a tech-loaded, durable choice blending luxury, safety, and driveability at used prices that make it a compelling family hauler over dated rivals.

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata arrives as a refined mid-size sedan with a restrained, Genesis-inspired design that's elegant yet understated for Indian tastes, powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine paired with a six-speed automatic delivering smooth acceleration and that first-in-class Android Auto integration for seamless smartphone connectivity. I appreciate its spacious cabin with plush rear seating—though slightly low—ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a user-friendly infotainment setup including clear satnav, making it family-friendly for long drives. Standout is the India-specific suspension tune that handles potholes masterfully while offering engaging dynamics, sharp steering, and strong brakes, ensuring stability on diverse roads from city chaos to highways. Tech-forward with features like cooled seats and sport mode, it was priced premium at launch around 21-25 lakh ex-showroom, which limited sales, but used models now offer exceptional value with proven reliability. For buyers eyeing a premium used sedan, its blend of comfort, fun, and advanced features makes it a compelling choice over dated alternatives.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the 2015 Hyundai Sonata a refined mid-size sedan that elevates everyday driving in India with its Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design, borrowing elegant cues from the Genesis for a sophisticated presence on our roads. Its stiffer high-strength steel chassis boosts torsional rigidity, paired with a reworked suspension that sharpens handling through city traffic and highways, while significantly lowered NVH levels create a serene cabin ideal for long Indian drives. I appreciate the premium interior with higher-quality materials, spacious seating for five, and features like Android Auto integration, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, and radar cruise control that enhance safety in chaotic traffic. Powered by a 2.4-litre GDI petrol engine delivering 190bhp and 25kgm through a smooth six-speed automatic, it offers brisk acceleration without feeling thirsty in mixed conditions. Though not the sportiest, its balance of comfort, tech, and value makes it a strong buy for families seeking luxury without excess, especially with Hyundai's reliable warranty backing it against our diverse road challenges.
December 15, 2025
I find the 2015 Hyundai Sonata a standout mid-size sedan that punches above its weight in driving dynamics, especially with its locally tuned suspension tailored for Indian roads, absorbing bumps while delivering confident cornering and exceptional brakes that inspire trust on highways and twisty paths. The steering is sharp, particularly in sport mode, making it surprisingly fun to drive without sacrificing comfort, and the plush interior offers ample space with heated/cooled seats and a clear satnav interface that enhances long journeys. In India, where rough roads test every car, this Sonata excels by never feeling unsettled, providing a premium feel rivaling pricier rivals. While it's no longer in production, finding a well-maintained used example around 8-12 lakh makes it a smart buy for those seeking refinement, tech like Android Auto—the first in any production car—and reliability without the premium badge tax. I recommend it wholeheartedly for buyers prioritizing drive quality and value in the pre-owned market, as it transforms mundane commutes into enjoyable cruises.

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata received praise for its refined chassis and suspension, offering a smooth and solid ride. This improvement was notable, especially over bumps and potholes. I think this enhancement made the Sonata a more comfortable choice for daily driving.

Hyundai introduced the 2015 Sonata with a new 2.4-liter direct-injected I4 engine, which produced 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Although the power was slightly down from the previous year, it was aimed at improving responsiveness. I believe this change helped in making the car more drivable in various conditions.

The 2015 Hyundai Sonata featured a stylish and upscale interior, particularly in the Limited trim with its rich 2-tone black and brown theme. The interior was praised for its comfort and premium feel. I think the interior design was a significant selling point for this model.

Hyundai continued its tradition of offering great value with the 2015 Sonata, starting at a base price of $21,960. The Limited trim, although pricier at $27,335, still represented a good bargain. I believe the pricing strategy helped in maintaining the Sonatas competitive edge.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the 2015 Hyundai Sonata wasn't officially launched new, but imported units in top-spec 2.4-litre automatic variants commanded ex-showroom prices around Rs 25-28 lakh back then, reflecting its premium positioning against rivals like the Toyota Camry. Today, in the used market, ex-showroom equivalents for well-maintained low-mileage examples hover at Rs 8-12 lakh, depending on condition and location, while on-road prices add 10-15% for registration, insurance, and taxes, pushing totals to Rs 9-14 lakh in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai. I see this as excellent value, offering Genesis-inspired luxury, advanced safety tech, and a plush cabin at a fraction of new luxury sedan costs—far better than depreciated Europeans. Running costs stay reasonable with affordable Hyundai parts availability nationwide, making it a smart pick for buyers wanting upscale comfort without premium servicing bills; just factor in higher insurance for imports, but overall, it punches above its weight for long-term ownership satisfaction.

In India, the 2015 Hyundai Sonata was launched with ex-showroom prices starting around 20.67 lakh for the base variant and going up to 25.18 lakh for the top-end model, reflecting its positioning as a premium D-segment sedan competing with the likes of Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. On-road prices in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai added roughly 12-15% more, pushing totals to 24-29 lakh, factoring in 10-12% road tax, insurance around 50,000-70,000, and registration fees; for instance, a top variant ex-showroom at 25.18 lakh could hit 29 lakh on-road. Today, in the used market as of late 2025, well-maintained 2015 models with 50,000-80,000 km fetch 8-12 lakh ex-showroom equivalent from certified dealers, with on-road including transfer fees and inspections adding 1-2 lakh, making it a bargain under 14 lakh total. I see this pricing as a golden opportunity—originally overpriced for mass appeal which led to poor sales, but now the depreciation works in your favor, offering luxury features and build quality at entry-level luxury SUV money, ideal if you're budget-conscious yet want a refined daily driver without new-car premiums.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

In Indian conditions, I get 12-13 kmpl overall from the 2.4-litre automatic Sonata, dropping to 10 kmpl in city crawl and stretching to 15 kmpl on highways. Running costs suit moderate users at Rs 8-10/km on petrol, with reliable efficiency for its power—buy if comfort trumps ultra-thrifty mileage.
December 15, 2025
In Indian conditions, the 2015 Sonata's 2.4L engine delivers city mileage of 8-10 kmpl and highway 12-14 kmpl, translating to monthly running costs of 8,000-12,000 for 1,500 km on premium fuel. It's decent for its power and size but thirstier than efficient rivals, so factor 20-25% higher fuel bills; opt for highway use to maximize value and consider it if performance trumps pure economy in your buying decision.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Hyundai Sonata (2015)

Hyundai Motor has unveiled the long-awaited replacement for the Sonata - The 2010 Sonata YF at the Frankfurt Auto Show 2009.

The new Sonata completes the ‘Fluidic’ design philosophy treatment that Hyundai first introduced with the Verna. The results are a serious contender for the spot on the most-wanted list of sedans in the country. This though was the first car to adopt this philosophy – first introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show as a concept. Available in both manual and automatic versions, the new Sonata has what it takes to face the competitors like the Camry and the Accord. Technologically adept, the new Sonata introduces the latest in power-train technology from Hyundai to its customers. While the earlier launches did not see Hyundai meet much success, the Sonata has turned enough heads already and takes the fight to its competitors instead.

Hyundai India has launched the much-awaited 2012 model of Sonata in India at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi on 4th January. Hyundai Motor unveiled the replacement for the Sonata - the "Sonata YF" at the Frankfurt Auto Show 2009. The new Sonata is set to be a revolutionary redesign for the mid-size sedan, incorporating a more modern, sportier design that radically deviates from the current generation's more conventional style. Development of the 6th generation Sonata sedan took Hyundai engineers and designers 4 years and $372 million to develop. It is also equipped with the company's latest power-train technology that offers class-leading performance at no compromise of efficiency. It is expected that all new Sonata will shake the D+ sedan segment with its polarizing new design and features.

Exterior

It is easy to make the connection with the rest of the Hyundai line-up and the latest Sonata. Distinct, flowing curves from the front to the rear and back to the cascading front grille, makes for an imposing presence leading up to a swept up rear, making this one of the most striking cars in its segment. Indeed, you may be forgiven for thinking that the Hyundai punches well above its weight and easily bests the entry level Mercedes C class and the BMW 3-series in this department. From tip to toe, it is also one of the longest cars in the super-sedan segment, at 4820 mm. The newly designed alloys lend a classy finish to what is a terrific package, as far as looks are concerned.

Interior

The interiors in the new Sonata are in the favoured two-tone finish of beige and steel grey with a leather wrapped steering wheel with multiple functions integrated completing the classy layout. The center console provides for a novel lighting scheme; called the ‘vacuum fluorescent display’ cluster, the Tron-like blue provides for beautiful night-time illumination. Night drives in this sedan are going to be much longer than budgeted for! Passenger space is ample and rear legroom as well as head clearance more than comfortable – making this as fun to sit in the rear as drive.

Comfort and Convenience

There is ample storage in nooks and crannies in this behemoth of a car. A leather reclining armrest in the rear is complemented by the front armrest that neighbours space to keep one’s music player between the driver and the passenger’s seat. An iPod, Auxiliary and USB interface is provided as well along with steering mounted controls for the excellent stereo that comes with the car. The drivers’ seat is electrically adjustable in ten different ways and carries two preset memory buttons to store the settings for future reference. As such, the features offered on the car are not only class-leading but class-defining.

Music System

The stock system on the Sonata benefits from Hyundai’s experience in the territory of audiophiles, and is the best-sounding stereo in the class hands down. Low range bass and high range treble are excellently reproduced and the multi-function steering wheel controls allow easy accessibility. A standard 6 speaker setup that has served Hyundai well, traditionally has been favoured here, and to good effect. With rear seat arm rest controls, the designers have exhibited foresight for a sedan that is intended primarily for rear-seat customers.

Engine and Gearbox

The petrol 2.4 litre engine in the Sonata is a beautiful work of engineering, with lower exhaust emissions made possible due to the direct injection of fuel into the combustion, making this, in the process one of the most powerful inline injection engines in the segment. The engine delivers 201 PS of power while harnessing the benefits of a continuously variable valve timing terrain. The engine is smooth as silk and with excellent insulation there is hardly any ambient noise in the cabin. The economy figures for the engine are impressive too with a promised 18.2 kmpl from the 2.4 L petrol power-plant. With a healthy dose of power, the big Hyundai has no problem zooming around either in urban traffic or on the highways straights. The power is usable all through the power-band and low-end torque which has been an issue in Hyundai drivability in the past, makes no appearance here. This car is smooth from start to finish.

Safety Features

The D+ segment is rife with examples of cars taking the safety of the rear passenger seriously as well, and the Sonata is no exception. The ESP first seen in the Frankfurt Auto show on the Sonata makes an appearance along with the ABS and brake assist systems. A 6 airbag system including curtain impact and passenger sensing systems make this easily the safest D+ sedan on the road. To ensure safety of the desirable car itself, a keyless system with an alarm and a built in engine-immobilizer are included. Auto headlight control and auto wipers along with the big 17” radials make this a complete package even in the unpredictable weather conditions of the countryside.

Suspension and Brakes

Included in the ‘vehicle dynamic control’ package of the Sonata are suspension setups that automatically take into account the weight ratios of the big car. It is essential also for cornering that the big car does not over-commit at speeds, into the corners. Indeed, body roll can be an issue in cars that are close to 5 metres long, but the Sonata corners with remarkable ease and with no hint of roll or leaving that centre line of balance. Even when enthusiastically thrown in to sharp bends, the wheels stay firmly planted on the tarmac. The big disc brakes (air-ventilated on both sets) do their job amply at maintaining driver confidence even at three-digit speeds.

Shades

The Sonata maintains some semblance of historical lineage with its predecessors in terms of the shades it is being offered in. Coral white (tinged with blue) harks back to the elegant shade the earlier Sonata ‘gold’ was first offered in. A silver, beige and black ensemble completes the line-up of the four shades the car is offered in. A surprise is there not being a shade of red that the big car would have graced. The pick of the lot is the signature coral white.

Main Features

6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, TCS, Rear view camera, Smart key with push button start, VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) cluster, Front and rear seat ventilation plus front seat warmers, 10-way adjustable power seat with lumbar support, 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, High intensity Xenon head lamps, Cruise control, Paddle shifts (only in automatic variant).

Reasons to Buy

Biggest car that is big on features in a segment that thrives on wooing buyers just short of the German saloons. The Sonata is easily the new benchmark in its segment.

Warranty

Standard manufacturer warranty of 2 years with an option to extend it by another year available

Verdict

A compelling statement of intent from Hyundai and by the looks of it, it would strike gold where Maruti-Suzuki combine has failed in the bid to woo more upscale buyers. The sedan would make a serious dent in the sales of the Camry even though it is launched merely months after the Sonata. The Accord would have a fight on its hands, and the beleaguered Japanese maker would be forced back to the drawing board. The Fluidic design philosophy is here to stay.
