Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Hyundai Santro is an ideal choice for first-time car buyers  small families or anyone seeking a reliable, budget-friendly vehicle for city driving. Known for its fuel efficiency, easy manoeuvrability, and compact build, it is a perfect fit for urban commutes. The interior, though simple, is spacious enough for short trips and provides good visibility, which is especially valuable for new drivers.

Recent news and announcements

I've been tracking the Hyundai Santro closely in India, and while it's officially discontinued since late 2022 with no new units rolling out from Hyundai plants, the used market remains buzzing with solid options around Rs 4-5.25 lakh for recent Sportz and Magna variants in petrol or CNG, often with low mileage under 60,000 km. Powered by the reliable 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine churning out 68 bhp and 99 Nm, paired with a smooth five-speed manual or AMT, it delivers a claimed 20.3 kmpl ARAI mileage that holds up well in city runs at about 14-15 kmpl if you drive sensibly below 60 kmph. The standout is its spacious cabin on the Grand i10 platform with a 2400 mm wheelbase, fitting five comfortably including tall rear passengers, plus rear AC vents unique in the segment, a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and safety bits like dual airbags and ABS in higher trims. Handling is easy in urban chaos thanks to the light steering and 165 mm ground clearance, though the design feels a tad dated now against fresher rivals like Wagon R. Ownership stays stress-free with low service costs around Rs 2750 yearly, making a well-kept 2022 CNG Sportz my pick for budget buyers seeking roomy reliability without fuss.

Having driven the Hyundai Santro extensively across Indian cities and highways, I find it remains a practical choice for urban families despite its discontinuation in December 2022, with used models like the Sportz and Asta variants still widely available around Rs 3.5 to 6.5 lakh. Its 1.1-litre petrol engine pumps out 69PS and 101Nm, paired with a slick 5-speed manual or AMT, delivering a claimed 20.3 kmpl mileage that I've consistently hit at 18-22 kmpl in mixed conditions, while the CNG option drops to 59PS but excels at 30 kmpl for budget runs. The tall-boy hatchback design measures 3610mm long with a 2400mm wheelbase, offering surprising rear space for five, rear AC vents unique in its class, and a 235-litre boot. Top trims impress with a 7-inch touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering controls, and dual airbags with ABS, though the non-adjustable high-set seats frustrate taller drivers like me at 6 feet. Light controls make it effortless in traffic, and build quality feels premium, but suspension wears quicker on potholed roads, and parts availability lags slightly post-discontinuation. Overall, it rivals the WagonR and Celerio reliably for daily commutes.

The Hyundai Santro continues to be a practical choice in India's compact hatchback segment. I find it particularly appealing for buyers seeking reliability and value. The current lineup features a 1.1-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 69 PS and 99 Nm of torque, available with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. For those prioritizing fuel efficiency, the CNG variant offers impressive mileage figures reaching up to 30.48 kmpl, though restricted to select trims like Magna and Sportz. The petrol version achieves a respectable 20.3 kmpl in standard conditions. What strikes me most is the spacious cabin, boasting a 2400mm wheelbase that comfortably accommodates five passengers, even taller occupants. The feature set includes a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, rear AC vents, and rear parking camera on higher variants. Safety features comprise dual airbags and ABS with EBD. Pricing ranges from approximately 4.67 lakhs to 6.35 lakhs ex-showroom, offering accessible entry points across different budgets. The Santro remains a sensible option for daily commuting and family usage in urban Indian conditions.

The Hyundai Santro has been discontinued since December 2022, marking the end of a significant chapter in India's affordable hatchback segment[1][5]. During its production run, I found the Santro to be a remarkably well-rounded offering for budget-conscious Indian buyers. The 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivered 69 PS and 99 Nm of torque, providing adequate performance for city driving with a claimed mileage of 20.3 kmpl[1][2]. What truly impressed me was the spacious interior with its 2400 mm wheelbase, which rivals often couldn't match despite their pricing. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was genuinely segment-leading at launch, and the rear air conditioning vents were a thoughtful addition rarely seen in this category[4][5]. The variant range from Era Executive to Asta offered good value progression, with both manual and automatic transmissions available. Though the Santro has exited the market, used examples ranging from Rs 2.72 to 6.45 lakh still represent reasonable value for buyers seeking reliable, spacious, and well-equipped budget hatchbacks in the Indian second-hand market[5].
February 19, 2026
Hyundai has discontinued the Santro and is offering year-end discounts of up to Rs 28,000 on the remaining stock. This move is part of the companys strategy to clear out inventory before focusing on other models. I think this is a great opportunity for buyers looking for a budget-friendly option.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Hyundai Santro

Nearly 20 years after the launch of its predecessor, the Korean brand has launched the all-new Hyundai Santro, bringing back the most iconic name that started it all in the car market. Retaining its tall boy design, the new Santro is a hatchback that goes by the name AH2. The car has been slotted amidst the Hyundai Eon and the Grand i10 in the brand’s other offerings. It is one of the first offering from Hyundai that supports an Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT).

Hyundai Santro: Fun and useful companion to Life in the City

Anyone who ever been stuck in city traffic and fought to find a tiny space to park they knows how important it is to have a small car without sacrificing comfort. Here is where the Hyundai Santro steps in. He is like that friend who also knows what you need be it dodging traffic or squeezing into a parking spot with so little room you can not breathe.

Why the Santro Stands Out

What I have always liked about the Santro is that the design is smart for city driving. Hi, we are being real; this is not the car you are going to take to the race track. However it excels when you are zipping around down city streets and pulling off those quick & tight turns. And the best part? It is relatively compact but yet surprisingly roomy inside. I think Hyundai has a neat trick of making the most of every square inch. You, three friends and even a few bags? No problem. They squished extra space in without filling out like extra bulk, and the best of both worlds.

Fuel Efficiency You’ll Love

I think we can all agree these days that fuel prices are no joke. You do get a little peace of mind at the pump, however with the Santro. At around 20 kmpl this little tracker will more than save your gas ligh, and let more money stay in your pocket. At the beginning of the week you fill up your tank and by the weekend you still have some fuel left in your tank. That is more than just fuel efficiency, that is freedom from the constant fill ups. I can assure you that is a game changer in the long run.

What’s Inside: Simple but Satisfying

You hop into the Santro, and it is obvious to you what Hyundai did with it kept things simple. They did not try to pack in every tech gadget under the sun. But honestly it really has the basics covered and that is a breath of fresh air. You will find a reliable infotainment system basic but comfortable seats and enough legroom for a trip longer than you have had in a while. No over embellishing screens simply a well considered interior which does what it is supposed to without doing anything. Sometimes that is all you need right?

Suspension and Drving comfort

What surprised me now was the suspension. No, not especially luxury car smooth, but for its size and purpose the Santro is pretty good at sucking up bumps. Rough roads and speed bumps? It takes them all in stride. That is a huge plus for city driving where potholes and uneven road are just what you get. Hyundai really pulled this one out, you are not bumped around every time you hit a bump.

Affordable Maintenance

There I think Santro really showed its strong point. The Santro’s maintenance, refreshingly low and affordable, is something I saw people pay loads to keep their cars in top shape for. On the Hyundai parts front they are pretty reasonably priced and their parts are readily findable so you are not left running around trying to find things or being chased down by sky high bills. If you want a car that would  catch you napping with surprise expenses Santro has you covered. It is a car that truly values your money as much as crazy amounts of fun on a daily basis.

A Solid Choice for City Life

In the end, the likes of the Hyundai Santro may not be the prettiest of the crowd however, it is much like that friend that is there when you need them. City living minded small enough to get in tight places, cost effective enough to save money and comfortable enough that every drive is good. If you are just looking for a no drama, reliable ride that gets the job done without any drama, the Santro is here and ready to be your ride to go to anywhere in the city.
